This WILL be the year I either develop 4 way coordination or I'll hang em up! I bought a kit late Aug. of 23'. I basically work so much I don't have the time or energy for lessons so I just try to do all I can when I can, through KZfaq... Tryna stay positive this year and not get down on myself!... Here we gooo!.

The struggle is real!! Learning at 12yo the brain absorbs and learns at a much greater clip! I'm 50 and that 4 way coordination is a massive struggle, wish someone had the fix, I haven't found a drill that works or makes me confident there is a quicker way to do so...

Man don’t hang them up, this stuff takes time. Thousands upon thousands of hours practicing. I understand work gets in the way, so you can’t knock yourself for learning something slower than someone who is fortunate enough to spend 5-6 hours a day behind the kit. Just keep pushing and you’ll get there!

After playing for over 40 years I still wonder how much better we drummers would become if we simply had the will power to NOT compare ourselves to other drummers. It's even harder today when we're being inundated by so many amazing drumming videos here on KZfaq. But being able to replace comparing ourselves to them with being inspired by them instead is a major yet attainable goal. Thanks, Rob. ❤

That last bit of advice is certainly the most helpful in my opinion: don’t compare yourself to others. If I’ve learned anything in my now 5 year drumming journey, is that self-doubt is a progress killer. Thanks again Rob for your insight. Watching your videos always inspires me!

I got back into drums last year after a 12 year hiatus and found your channel. For 12 months, every day, I've done one of your hand workouts on a practice pad (swiss triplet, doubles, 6 stroke) and the progress I've made is immense, a true game changer. I am so much more agile around the kit now. It also speaks to your point about repetition. Focus on developing practical things over and over and over rather than trying to learn 40 rudiments. Thanks for all good, practical advice you give, you're a great instructor.
@lobbyrobby
@lobbyrobby 5 ай бұрын
Great advice. I've only been playing for a couple months. I almost gave up a couple of weeks. I'd learn something and as soon as I could barely play it I'd move on to something new. I was starting to get overwhelmed. Then one day I went back to playing a simple beat and fill over and over again. I started having fun again after that
@TravisPacheco1
@TravisPacheco1 5 ай бұрын
@@lobbyrobby It’s so true what he says about muscle memory. Once you can play something adequately, don’t move on, that’s the time to then drill it down into your DNA. He has a 20 minute triplet workout and at the start of the video he said if you do this 3-4 times a week for a year you’ll have the best hands in the game. It took me a full two months before I could do it at his tempo, then I did it for 10 more months, same with 6 stroke roll. Now those are deeply engrained and make learning other things so much easier because the foundation is there.

Rob, you are my drum teacher. Your videos have improved my playing technically but they’ve also improved my confidence! I’ve been playing off/on for 18 years; I’m back on and better than ever because of you. I love this instrument and I’ll never leave it. I have a “procrastination” proof set up: music stand, practice pad, metronome and a chair in my living room facing the TV. I practice while watching Bob Burgers. Then in my bedroom, I have my new Roland V-drums set-up with a TV monitor. I’ll sit behind that and play along with your videos, and other YT drummers, and play along with my Spotify playlist. These tips are real and they work. I practice 5/6 days a week, I give myself rest days just like with exercise. Sometimes I’ll only have time to practice for 5 minutes on a given day, but I make sure I’m behind my practice pad at the very least. All this to say, THANK YOU Rob. Thank you so much! ✨

Man thank you. That was what I needed. I’ve been wanting to play drums since I can remember. I played trumpet, guitar, bass ( in many bands for many years). And always, always wanted to play the drums. My wife recently asked me to put the kit away as we needed room in the basement for other things. I knew if I stacked it, I would never practice. So I rearranged the whole basement to keep that kit playable. So glad I found you. For some reason you inspire me to just get to it and enjoy playing. Can’t wait to see where this journey goes. I’m in my 50’s and looking forward to becoming the drummer I’ve always wanted to be. Thank you for all your videos and inspiration. Means everything.

I’m 33, work long days and last year I had one of the longest breaks from playing drums than I’ve ever had. However, I recently came up with a 20-20-20 rule. 20 minutes doing a quick basic work out and stretching, 20 minutes on the practice pad (my main 4 are singles, doubles, paraddidles and six stroke) and 20 minutes on the kit. During my lunch at work I figure out what I want to practice on the kit so I’m ready to go with those 20 mins. I had been thinking I wouldn’t improve anymore unless I had 3 hours a day to spend playing, but even with just the 40 mins between the pad and the kit, I’ve been improving. I really enjoyed your video and will work to incorporate your suggestions!

These are great tips! I spend most of my practice time playing to songs on a playlist I made and recording video of it with my phone. It can be hard to not get frustrated that I'm not playing every note perfectly or just not even getting close. This is kind of just comparing myself to the original drummer, but I think if you focus on the most obvious differences and try to attack those weak spots from big to small, it can be very effective. I just have to know when I've bitten off more than I can chew and come back to it later. Thanks for the advice!

Can't stress the importance of getting a practice pad. It's the cheapeast and most valuable thing to do. I was an OK/medicore drummer for years, did gigs and recordings in bands...but finally getting a practice pad (+ a metronome app on my phone :-) was game changing. I don't have a drumkit at home, so it might happen that there's sometimes a week or more that I don't get to sit behind a real kit. That sucks, but it doesn't matter much, cause I'm using that damn pad at home everyday and once I get to finally play music, I'm ready to go from the beginning. And for the fun: play with as many other people as possible. Ideally people who play on a higher level and/or different styles of music than you listen to.
