You might be new to cycling overall, and you're likely much newer to different cycling group rides or training rides. Often times when out on a group ride many cyclists use a strategy called pace-lining. The unfortunate apart about pace-lining when you're new to the sport of cycling is that if you don't know what you're doing you can likely get it all wrong.
In this video, we get out with local professional cyclist and cycling coach Taylor Warren and I break down my 5 favorite tips for beginners who are new to pace-lining or group rides. Even experienced riders who've not done much group riding can benefit from these tips as they really are just general best practice to follow when riding around others efficiently.
Hopefully you enjoy this video, if you'd like to see more tutorial style videos like this where I offer up my insights into proper cycling etiquette or technique, like this video and let me know!
Thanks again for watching.

This is a great video. I looked for one like this a while back and found nothing so I think you've posted the first good pace line video ever! Also your tips should be thought of as actual instructions or even actual RULES. If somebody screws up it can bring down a bunch of guys. Pacelining is simple but proper coordination is crucial. My bike club Big Orange uses a paceline on PCH to get big groups of riders from Santa Monica to our climbing segments in Malibu . When we rotate on the front the slower rider says "clear" when the lead guy has completely passed far enough ahead to move over to the slower line. We also set a speed for the ride usually 25mph on the fast side and 24mph on the slow side. When approaching intersections we "freeze" the rotation cuz usually we have to slow or stop. For large groups of about 20 or 30 riders just the first 8 people will rotate on the front while the rest just stay in a 2 by 2 line enjoying the draft. Again nice video Walt.

Thanks, Chris! I did feel like it was a subject that was lacking on KZfaq and it never hurts as a beginner to take in some info prior to tackling the faster group rides that like to get organized. The more ya know 🤷‍♂️ It’s such a simple idea but all the tiny nuances I feel like can be forgotten. PCH is critical! You have to maintain speed out there to not get run over. Good tips on setting a speed prior and keeping the folks pulling to the smaller selection.

I do feel like that’s a good idea as well. I also want to talk more in depth on advanced pacelining as well for lead outs and faster aggressive group rides

Good stuff, especially about being smooth. Pet peeve for me is when someone surges when they get on the front. Rinse and repeat enough, the pace is pretty high and nowhere near as efficient as it should be due to all the surges. I'd like to think of riding in a paceline not so much as overtaking the other riders up to the front but that everyone else is peeling away and falling back.

Appreciate the perspective, my dude! I totally agree: the surge causes a gnarly and unnecessary slinky. Great way to think of it. Hopefully some other read your comment. 🤘🏼

When you are done with your pull and going into the return line. Start moving over once your hips clear the other rider. This return line was sloppy. Most of the riders were two bike lengths ahead before pulling off. The return line needs to be just has tight has the pulling line.

so if there is no wind from the side, what is the default side to slow down on?

This can depend. Often, I’d argue it’s safer to pull away from traffic if on a shoulder and have the faster train come up on the left side, slower train rolling backward away from traffic. Sometimes it’s just group preference, though. 😊
