“If you’re making any changes, let your team know beforehand” There was a leader I had one time that wasn’t good at this. All the way leading up to Sunday service, up to the time I’m pulling my car up into the parking lot I’d be listening to the songs, still studying them to make sure they’re right in my head. And then I get in and he says he switched a song out. !!!

Great advice!! I'm 61 and have led worship for 40+ years. I have learned these 5 basic tips and/or principles through the school of hard knocks. Thank you Luke and team for pouring into worship leaders solid advice and your commitment to serve the church! My hobbies are Riding and training Horses, fabricating and welding and woodworking! I love doing all of them! but they are just hobbies. The mission of the church to reach as many as we can with the Gospel of Christ. That takes precedence over all we do. Wether I'm with my horses, welding, work with wood or my job as a full-time worship leader, The call of Christ is to glorify our Heavenly Father through the life we live! God Bless all of you at Churchfront and the worshipministryschool!!

When it comes to dressing up and presenting yourself, I usually try to keep in mind the context I'm leading in. I normally lead in a more conservative church with older members, so I would go full suit and tie or atleast a dress shirt, but that can be a really distracting appearance in a more contemporary context so I tend to dress down a bit more there. But yes showering before is always a good idea!

I’m 15 and am (helping to) lead worship at my small church for about a year now. I’ve been a guitarist and background singer for for the most part, but I’ve recently been getting more opportunities to lead vocally, as well as be the actual leader of the team. I appreciate the tips very much, and plan to incorporate them into my life and leadership when I lead. 😊🔥

Started working in worship ministry in my early 20's and now in my mid 30's. Definitely learned these lessons the hard way and totally agree with those points. Now that I don't have the same energy that I use to have, I make sure I treat my days off as that. Also, go on vacation when you can to kind of reset your brain and your whole being. Just like any job, the time away can be just as helpful as what you do on the job.

Great video Luke! I always love the way you explain leadership and team building. It is so encouraging to me! My advice would be to connect to even one other person who has worked or currently works in ministry. Being able to sit down and voice my concerns and hear wisdom from someone who has seen it before has been a life-saver for me in my first years of Worship Leading as a vocation.

This is so strong Luke. Well done! I'm nearly 30 and have been leading since youth group days. My hobby is woodworking and the advice I would give my younger self is to follow your lead Luke on sitting down with older/wiser people to grow in wisdom and leadership. I currently have 5 coaches in my life. Two for over spiritual development/leadership, a vocal coach, a personal trainer, and a nutritionist. Try to be well rounded as a person and grow to be healthy in body, mind, and soul. Don't be afraid to go after someones time that you look up to. You can always honor them by paying for their time, even if you are simply paying for the lunch you sat down over together.

Tech Advice I wish that I had from a small church: Ask people to help, or at least start by, "Hey would you be interested in checking out the system, and seeing what we do?" Don't do it all by yourself. I know there are a bunch of one man bands who get by doing it themselves. Maybe it runs just fine with you being in control, but you should alow others to serve too. It will be rewarding for everyone. Yes there WILL be mistakes as new people learn. But Tthat's how we learn. Let them make a mistake every once in a while, and it will teach them. Be gracious, and loving. We aren't running a concert. We are worshipping God. Keep that in the forefront. God won't be mad if they miss a lyric, or cause some feedback in the PA. Coming from someone who did it solo for 3+ years. Seeing my teams skills grow from never touching tech, to running it now. It's a huge blessing.

A worship pastor I had at the church I attended was the complete opposite of being a godly leader. He was toxic, unqualified emotionally, personally and spiritually. He gossiped about people that saw through him and walked out on rehearsals because he knew no one liked him and he was unqualified in leading. He started his own private small group of fans and later quit because most of the church hated his guts. This is what I never want to be like. Sadly there's lots of leaders like this.

We had to switch churches just so we could learn to say "no". Appropriate boundaries are key to not burning out. I've only ever been at churches where we're all volunteers and there will always be a need for more people. Be honest with what you can do and what you can't. Know yourself well enough to know to be able to set those boundaries and be open about them. Edit: I'll also add, if you're scheduling others, to help them with boundaries as well. Some I trust to tell me when they need a break but I try to have all my musicians play twice a month max to give them time to worship off team and be with their families.

Maybe I’m pasé, but treating a church band as more of a band than a full time career makes it a lot more fun. And with the right mix of people, you even get more passion and commitment when people don’t see playing music at a church as a job. Just how I always liked to approach music in general. To each their own.

It’s hard to find balance when so many worship leader positions are part time, and unpaid or only paid a small stipend that in no way compensated for the time and care it takes to prepare a worship service and develop a worship team.

That is so true. I'm in a similar situation myself. If you haven't already, I would encourage you to really communicate with your senior pastor and let him know everything that's going on. This way, you guys can come up with an adequate work load that won't be too straining on you, but still is affective in growing your team and the church. Hope that helps! Keep pushing! I'm sure you're doing an amazing job.

This is really great advice but it is for an entire worship team. My church is pretty small and I'm the sole worship leader sometimes there is no drummer and the pianist doesnt always show up which leads to just acapella by myself. And it is very challenging to do. I pray our church grows soon so I can take this advice and run with it. Thank you so much. What do you think would be a good idea when it comes to a situation like mine ?

A phone call. If this is not a priority of communication, I would severely doubt your desire to actually connect with people. It's not "old school" or "the way of the dinosaurs"; it's the next best thing to communicating in person. More often than not, I've seen texting and e-mails being used as a personal barrier, in the guise of being "efficient". The information being doled out is usually for a one-way benefit, not a two-way dialogue. Here's a thought: write personal hand-written notes. That will get people's attention.

These are all great points, the being professional part is me laugh because for whatever reason some worship leaders tend to push the envelope concerning personal appearance and dress. That’s all fine when you’re 17 in Highschool. Inappropriate dress begins to take on the feel of this is all about me, and less of the message that I am a servant of Christ and need to take care to not distract from who he is.Just saying.

My advice - Model and share your growth in every area you want your team to grow in - personal devotions, personal practice and development of musicianship. Don't allow toxic personalities to remain unchecked. (ex. if it means you have no drums because the only drummer available is inappropriate? Your better off without drums.)

All good advice although I would like to add something which goes a bit beyond boundaries - I'm 66 years old and have been self-employed for most of my adult life - I'm a member of the tech team, a volunteer, that happens to be led by a capable individual - There are times when you need to go beyond your boundaries in order to pull something off in a professional manner - If you intend on going beyond boundaries most of your life that can cause issues to arise in your personal life - However, in life, and certainly when involved in a volunteer atmosphere, you will experience the need to go beyond what most would consider typical boundaries and how they relate to family time - As someone who owns his own company and someone who loves what he does for a career it is indeed difficult to watch the boundaries although I have gotten better about it in my old age - it also helps to be married to someone who understands the boundaries just may get broken - all in all good tips to follow.
