these are the things I usually ask when designing a character. ●Where was your character born? ●Who are their parents/family? ●Are the parents/family alive? ●What was the character doing before the adventure(start of the story)? ●What does your character want? (extras) (if your characters start is different from where they are now) ●Why did they leave that life ? ●What did the character leave behind? also nice video 🤗👍

Don't forget about Mob from Mob Psycho. Mob is a character that is very plain and lacks in visual interest, but it's appealing because it relates to the main themes of the series. That is more of a rare case to what we usually see though and you kind of touched on that around the end

I don’t know what genre of character design this type is called but i think the denji from chainsaw man, shinji ikari and hajime hinata look are very good examples too. Also western examples would be stuff like the main cast of rick and morty or jacks design in samurai jack. Aka all characters designed to be intentionally simple and basic so that it makes them both feel like plain jane “another face in the crowd” type people while also having that simplicity make them stand out much more against their piers and environment. Like mob, that simplicity is also a good way of conveying who they are visually as people Denji wearing a basic plane buisnessman attire, but still having it be slightly customized and more “buisness casual” in comparison to the other characters that work in the same organization as he does makima, angel, aki etc It helps him both blend in, AND stand out in a crowd. It also takes on a complete different meaning when his drip becomes bathed in rhe black inks of blood that come with the chainsaw devils transformation and overall head and silhouette.

I think another aspect of your “Be Practical” tip is to keep the design simple. As a writer, I don’t want to exhaust my artist with an unnecessarily elaborate design or overly complicated costume. Whenever I see armor, for example, with too many flourishes like feathers or sashes, I feel a pang of sympathy for the artist stuck drawing it from several different angles for twenty-odd pages. Unless the artist came up with it! Lol Thanks for another great video! I started watching on the recommendation of Monitor Comics, and I’m subscribed now.

@Rainbow Rose Princess Mishti That’s fair! Forgive me, I didn’t mean to seem dismissive of other cultures. Indeed, culturally appropriate costumes are a major part of the Be Practical section! :)

Just saw it yesterday, but an artist i follow who works for DC (their name is psudoynm) was giving criticism of some new clunky overdesigned batman armor skins in some videogame Essentially they gave their own take on a MUCH cooler slimmed down suit saying: “The challenge of making cyber or just armor in general is creatints points of interest for where the eyes can both move and rest. Covering a surface in unnecessary clunky lines literally everywhere can jarble the visual language to hell and back. They aim for “realism” but just wind up compensating for it with unnecessarily muddied designs, as if most tech in real life looks anything like that.” You CAN have distinct and huge armor while still keeping the visual language intact. Stuff like griffith and guts’ armor in beserk are great examples of that, a lot of the cast of overwatch too.

Heat blast, got it boomer, here's some ideas I'd like to see you draw in a video if you were bored. made the up manga: "The Hardest" protagonist name "TryHard". Imagine Endeavor with a brown color palette with earth bending instead of fire. Story targeted towards 20 and 30 year Olds coming in terms that they'll never be #1, and being #2 or being in the conservation for #1 is reward enough. IRON MIGHT, REMINDS me of Fire Punch , great title. HOW bout the made up manga "Dragon Skull" where you have a protagonist that wears a bone helmet and has dragon powers. Here's the fun part the protagonist is bowser like and the final villian would have a mustache like mario

When designing a character does it have to fictionally be fancy or can it be more like the realistic side like example Vagabond or Monster?
@mjolninja9358
@mjolninja9358 9 ай бұрын
It depends on what you’re going for - for your story. Usually the realistic designs tend to have a serious and mature tone, while those that have a more stylish designs tend to be more lighter in tone! But hey you can break the rules too! One Punch Man has an incredible and realistic looking art and goes well with their comedy

@@mjolninja9358 that is a good reference I kinda have used as inspiration to work on the anatomy for the characters on designs and make them consistent. used a lot of hatching which takes a lot of time.
