Man makes a ton of great points. We do live in an era where creativity is heavily stifled. You’ve got way too many artists and internet gurus saying “don’t do this “, or “only draw that”, or “never draw this.” And as a result, everything has a distinct sameness to it. I wish we could return to the early internet days where more people were more bold with their artwork.

Its something I always noticed being relatively new to the art scene, places like art discords and etc telling me CONSTANTLY to "never do this" "Never use chicken scratchy lines", Now people actually really like my rough linework. Ever since I've just left all those places and just sat down and ground up skills i've improved a lot more than being in those places ever did do. @@ddmarkk

DUDE I AGREE WITH YOU SO MUCH! SURE THERE ARE A LOT OF INTERNET ARTISTS WHO ARE GOOD BUT ALMOST NONE OF THEM CREATE ANYTHING ORIGINAL AND MAKE STORIES OUT OF THEM!!! They just draw other characters to make money and stay afloat even if they have a passion for creating art, they never think about creating stories that we could potentially see from them if they thought about it and put into action. Imagine a million artists creating a million stories, but in this reality, we got a million people drawing one person's characters from a single story.

Congrats! If you don’t mind me asking what’s the oneshot program with viz like? Do you have an editor? Also what do you think helped give you the edge to get in?

@@bubu6021 Hey there, so I'm a little limited on what I can say, but it's been a good experience. I am working with an editor, and it's nice to have someone to work with that has literal decades of experience. haha. I think the hardest part is the sheer leap in standards from "mine" to "professional". I've always held my work to a high standard, but even I was a bit unprepared for exactly how much work it is to reach the next level. It's nice being pushed in a kind way to improve. The book "The Shonen Jump Guide to Making Manga" is a pretty good representation of what it's like with the Main character and his editor at Shueisha. As for what gave me an edge, I think it was reaching out and looking up different manga teachers and schools that have videos online. I was going through the trouble to either translate them (as best I can with my limited Japanese or my Japanese friends helped), or find those who had English captions/versions. I've also gone out of my way to find mangaka, doujinka, and assistants to mangaka to learn from and grow with. That's been extremely helpful in our voice calls while all working together. Basically found the people who did what I wanted to do on a more professional level and worked to get a place in their circles/on their level over many years. I also interned at a manga publisher on the business side about 6 years ago. There's a lot of really niche concepts in manga, and knowing a lot of that was a bit surprising to the editors. So going out of my way to think about manga from their perspective and trying to anticipate what and editor will look for really helped.

Hey DD Markk, recently found your videos and honest to god they have been a god-send. They made me wake up to the fact that I've just been sitting my bum ahh down w/o trying to fulfill any of my long-term aspirations and not discovering myself for these past few couple of years. I mean it when I say this, the discovery of your channel has marked a pivotal turning point in my life. You likely won't see the shot in the dark that is my comment, but I thought it'd be worth asking this potentially dumb question(s) anyways in the event that you ever came back scrolling through. Do you think it's possible to make it in Japan? Like getting your manga published in Japan (whether that be through a platform like Manga Plus Creators or something else). I ask this because I have a passion for making stories, worlds where other people can just immerse themselves in and disconnect from reality. So I've debated between pursuing writing webnovels as my full-time passion project on platforms like Royal Road, or putting my head to grindstone and honing my artistry skills for the next couple of years to the point that I can draw a competent manga and upload it on a platform like Manga Plus Creators. I know that there's no such thing as a guaranteed path to success but I want to take it from somewhere whose already trekked what I like to think to be large portion of the path of comic creation, is it possible to get a large audience with your manga? tl;dr - You's a god, love your thought-provoking videos man. Do you think it's possible to get published in Japan/get a large audience with your manga? (with sufficient hard-work, discipline, and bit of luck of course)
