Excellent overview! I think rock dust and worn casting tea has helped my citrus hold fruit indoors and out. In Canada 9 varieties so far in 6 years.

@@KelloggGarden For last 4 years, Kishu mandarin, Navel orange, cocktail grapefruit, meyer lemon, Calamondin orange, Taitian lime/lemon, yuzu, delfino blood orange, pearl tangelo, I lost 2 trees all dwarfs in last two years but bought doubles. My experiment to see if I could keep these alive and flowering in Canada. Then there is the goji berries, Oregon cherry, 4 fig types, pomergranite x2, apricot,

Great video! Can you please supply your citrus, cactus mix to the east coast please please? Kelloggs dont seem like they supply it in my neck of the country lol. I live in Atlanta Ga zone 8A and have to always guess at pre-making my soil for citrus. Its so hard to get the right balance mix for my citrus in containers. Especially with my meyer lemons. I feel like its a constant guessing game with my tree.

We will absolutely put your request in. 😊 Meyers like loamy or sandy soil, like other citrus they need well-draining soil and getting the correct flow can take a bit of work. You should also check your soil pH, Meyers like a pH between 5.5 and 6.5. You can use lime to raise your pH and sulfur to lower it if that is the issue.

My Rio Red Grapefruit died during the Texas freeze last month. But the rootstock is still alive. Can I get some cuttings from your tree? My Improved Meyer lemon suffered the same thing. Rootstock is alive, but graft is dead.

Are you saying that if you allow your tree to fruit early, you can possibly cause it to be dwarfed?
@KelloggGarden
@KelloggGarden 3 жыл бұрын
We apologize for any miscommunication. In the first two years, you may not get many fruits on your tree, but it’s important that during this period you pick off any fruits that form to help the tree establish nice deep roots. Your citrus tree will not become a dwarf tree, however, you may be able to achieve larger harvests long term. Do you have any tips for planting in clay soil? Im in texas and we have really crappy clay soil but I really want a citrus. tree

Some cities have compost from recycled food scraps if you dig a hole in that hard pan you could fill it like a 300 gallon pot. Most dwarf would only need 4 cubic feet of rich good draining soil in the hole.

Hi Ryan, amending clay-based soil can take time, many gardeners opt to grow in raised beds while they work on amending their clay soil. Compost is great for amending soil. To work the compost in faster you can use a rototiller to work it into the soil. You also want to look at covering your soil with slower composting materials such as wood chips, bark, sawdust, leaves, grass clippings. Use them as a mulch and as they break down they will work themselves into the soil. You can try growing some cover crops to add nutrients into your soil as well. Depending on where you are at you can also amend your soil using the Kellogg Garden Organics Amend Garden Soil, www.kellogggarden.com/products/kellogg/amend-garden-soil-for-flowers-and-vegetables/ or the G&B Organics Soil Building Conditioner www.kellogggarden.com/products/gborganics/gb-organics-soil-building-conditioner/. Both of these products will help break up the hard clay soils and add nutrients. To read more about amending soil check out this article, www.kellogggarden.com/blog/soil/kellogg-amend-soil/. If you have any additional questions please reply to this comment, we're happy to help.

I went ahead and ordered a new Rio Red Grapefruit tree, 2-3 years old. What would happen if I kept it in a 17-gallon container?
@KelloggGarden
@KelloggGarden 3 жыл бұрын
Rio Reds are so tasty , how wonderful. The Rio Reds are a smaller dwarf type variety that grows to be about 4 - 6 ft. Having your grapefruit tree in a pot that is 17-gallons should be good. Just remember they need well-draining soil, full sun, consistent watering, and to be on a fertilizer schedule.

Hi Angela , thankyou 4 the video I really appreciate it , maybe you can help me , I purchased a Meyers from my local nursery last year it's about 30" tall , I'm assuming the tree is about 2-3 yrs , it has a bowl shaped root system , should I pull the root system down to some degree , or should I leave it alone, the tree is doing well , has lots of flowers on it , also produced 2 lemons this season , my wife pulled both of them off while they were still green , thank you for a response, John from NJ...by the way I'm your new subscriber...👍👍👍🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲 Go Mr.President Trump...

Hi John, great question! If your tree is doing well and starting to produce, you can probably just leave the roots alone. It sounds like it is perfectly happy! When it comes time to re-pot your tree, just loosen up the roots when you move it. If some of the roots are circling the root ball, you can go ahead and slice through those roots with a clean knife. This will make sure those roots wrapping up the root ball won't constrict the tree and cause it to die.

Wonderful video! I have a question, please help me out. Would a citrus tree tolerate partial shade? Our backyard is pretty shady but it gets much more sunlight after the leaves fall. Meaning if I plant a citrus tree out there it will get partial sun from spring to fall, and full sun from mid fall to mid spring, and that's when citrus fruit is ripening. What would be your advice?
