I have been driving for two years and a half now, my father always taught me to drive smoothly. We call it the "limousine driving" he always told me : imagine you have a superstar sleeping at the back of your car after a concert and you have to drive him/her back to the hotel without waking him/her up. I drive a 2008 Peugeot 207, and I always drive it as smoothly as possible. But when I have the opportunity to drive a more modern car, I'm always amazed at how smoother it is! It covers all the small mistakes one can make. I'm happy to learn to drive on an older car because I'm sure people that are lucky enough to learn on a brand new car will build up bad habits without realising it!

That's such a good tip! Thank you (and your father) for that.

Since I started watching your videos I try to keep everything as smooth as possible when driving, be it on the street or on the road, it's really satisfying. When planning ahead, you know what's coming, so you are in peace with your driving. Sometimes I like to get out and enjoy a little bit of speed, driving in a sporty way, but still keeping everything smooth. Just like you said in one of your previous videos "the car becomes an extension of you".

These tips and videos have helped me massively. I've only been driving 4 years and people think I've driven much longer.

Regarding harsh control inputs - I think we also need to remember the driver knows any forces are coming and subconsciously uses the vehicle such as the steering wheel to brace themselves. The passenger always suffers more from poor driver inputs. Good video!

At 13:35 on, you weren't the only person enjoying it, Reg. So was I! A massive THANK YOU for all these videos. I bought your first book and devoured it long before I came across this KZfaq channel. Your videos are masterpieces of explanation and demonstration. A real pleasure to watch, over and over again. I'm pleased to say your lessons have just helped me to pass an IAM Roadsmart Master with Distinction. Real proof that taking your training helps drivers progress their driving and succeed with an advanced test. I am thankful for you!

I was watching that thinking I am sure he's in the Highlands (where I live) and sure enough you were. Lovely road that and great information on making it smooth. 👍

Dear Reg! Just today received your book, Advanced & Performance Driving, 2nd edition. something to study in lock-down. Re your video on SMOOTHNESS. You sometimes mention buses. As an ex advanced police driver, latterly 9 years a bus driver, can I add a few comments? Every good bus driver imagines an old lady, handbag on one arm and stick on the other, standing in the aisle, might or not be holding on to the pole, has she has never studied physics or driven a motor-vehicle. We see them in the internal mirror all the time. Advanced planning for a stop. 3 phase braking. Changing lane. Gentle, no swerve. Do it all the time. Only way to avoid lots of paperwork. We were even advised if a car pulls out in front of you, it is better to brake only firmly, crunch the car, rather than 39 pensioners fall to the floor! Huge claims. But hard to do. Smoothness is everything. SMOOTHNESS>

Hello Reg, Some videos at Masters standard would be great. If you could do some of those that would be really useful. I'm an observer with the Sheffield group of IAM and I would like to be able to stretch my associates beyond the advanced level so they get better passes and more importantly their driving gets even better. Thanks, Mark.

Another good, informative clip... I think if we mention the fact that the car is propped up on 4 springs they would better grasp the concept of smoothness and the inputs / outputs involved. Most folk don't give any thought to the processes or consider any mechanical appreciation of what's going on ?

Nice refresher vid from you there Reg, I've followed your posts on PH for many years. From some thirty four years ago now I can still remember my motorcycle instructor explaining why braking should be 'poo' shaped - soft and tapered at each end and firm in the middle. Another gem he taught us was after asking the class what an indicator could mean when flashing on a car. After numerous suggestions from a class of eager seventeen year olds he declared us all wrong and stated 'It means nothing more than the bulb works'. That was a precious teaching, one that has never left me and has been applicable to many aspects in life - do not assume anything. Great work Reg, I point a lot of people towards your vids.

Reg have you seen anything of the F1 driving instructor talk about ‘flat car’? It SEEMS like a similar idea, especially with the steering element

Rev matching… my wife’s manual BMW Rev matches. I hate it. It feels like the car is fighting against me. I’ve had to relearn/regress to a poor level of gear change to achieve smooth driving and allow the car to do my job for me.

When upshifting, you don’t release throttle completely right?

Not fully Omer, no, just relax the pressure on the pedal until the revs are correct for the next gear.

Reg I’ve been trying to practise Rev matching for some time. I feel like I can do it from third gear upwards in both directions but in the lower gears, particular between 1st and 2nd I just can’t get it. Let’s say I’m pulling away from a junction in 1st it seems to take too long for the revs to drop enough to match it for 2nd gear, then someone who’s behind who was expecting you to keep accelerating is now right up behind you. In my current car and last car when I push the clutch pedal and if I did nothing with the right foot the revs don’t instantly drop they reduce slowly. But this waiting for it drop really feels like it gets in the way of progress especially if I’m pulling out of a busier junction or roundabout and I need to get it moving. Have you got any tips for this?
@Zaranathax
@Zaranathax 2 жыл бұрын
It sounds to me like you are trying to perform an advanced technique for the sake of it. Try to accelerate less quickly and don't get into marginal situations where you have to accelerate really quickly to not be on others' way.
