Just buy an old School Steering wheel lock. It only takes an extra 30 seconds to arm / disarm, and is a good self defence tool should someone attempt to car jack you.

Novell idea, how about a key hole in the door and a key hole in the dash so you have somewhere to put that massive key. Use the key to unlock the car and start it. Forget all this wireless stuff, all it does is make it easier to steal. Pretty tough to steal a car if you cant get into it.

Many years ago, I had repeated unauthorized entry to my vehicle. I superglue'd razor blades to hook and loop velcro and attached it to the underside of the door handles and hood release. I never had the problem after locating the fingertips (3 in total) and blood down the side of my car door and on the ground. I removed my devices and rinsed the driveway well while giving a fresh wash to the car! Us Marines aren't known to play!😎

About 10 yrs ago after a spate of car thefts in the area my mate started putting his dog in the car at night. One night he was awoke to screams and his dog barking, went outide and found big patch of trouser material with a lot of blood on it, dog came back 10 minutes later tail waggy and a big grin on its face. 4 hrs later police came round accusing him of having a dangerous dog. Thief had gone to hospital for quite a few stitches and had complained to the police. Showing the CCTV saved the dog from being put down and thief was knicked

So many in the comments don't understand - just turn off the keyless entry function. They'll be an option in your car's onboard system to do it. Also worth noting that several manufacturers have now brought out key fobs that deactivate after a given period of rest. Hence, they're inert after resting and can't be bridged. Both our new cars have this functionality.

They should have 2 factor authentication at least as well as making it impossible to hack the OBD port or CAN bus. It’s negligent engineering and class action lawsuits should be filed to force car makers to get serious about theft prevention.

@Bryan-fn6lp Brilliant comment. 1000% agreed. The ongoing car thefts over the past, too many years, needs to be stopped. I'm extremely shocked and angry that the car manufacturers haven't nicked this yet. All the info is there in your comment... now, come on, engineers, get this situation to a non-issue!!! Too many folks still haven't a clue their car is a high risk for theft. Faraday boxes etc stop working after awhile. Here in canada the theives are following car owners, copying the key signal, then just scope out the car to find the best time to just take the car. You can turn your wheels, add a steering wheel club, add a port lock, install a non gps tracking system and still...if the theives really want your car bad enough...roll up a flatbed to steel it that way. This world is so far crazy it never going to right itself....just saying. And yea, I know a few who has their cars stolen. 🙏🕊🐾

Modern thieves can unlock and start new cars without the need for a signal from your key, rendering the need for a Faraday box. I speak from experience. I believe from my research, thieves who have access to a powerful diagnostic tool/computer programs can create a key wirelessly from their devices and then start the car via the OBD port

A couple weeks ago a car was stolen from a residential car park in the Cressex area. The owner used a Faraday bag. My theory is that the thieves have now upgraded to using a CAN Bus injection attack. They access the CAN bus via the head lights and send a data packet telling the car's computer that the key is present and validated. It then opens all locks and allows the engine to be started by the thieves. What can owners do to defend against that?

Thanks for the useful tips namesake, priceless. I heard you say you've never heard of people stealing you car while you are shopping and wanted to advise that this is the predominant method that is used in South Africa. The house security out there, especially in the cities, is like Fort Knox, so the easiest place to steal you car is while you are out shopping. Someone follows you carrying what appears to be a laptop bag and this is the signal booster/relay for the key fob signal!

As soon as I bought my new Land Cruiser last year I bought a Faraday box and pouch and put both the land cruiser and our BMW keys in it. I actually put them in the pouch then put the pouch into the box for double blocking security, just in case. While not as bad as other countries car theft crimes are increasing in Japan now and here the number 1 stolen car is actually Land Cruisers I think followed by Mercs, BMW and Audi's.

Mercedes (Keyless Start at least) - just click LOCK twice (Lock-Lock) as you walk away. The red LED on the key fob will blink a long blink, and then the entire key fob will go to sleep. When sleeping, the transponder is OFF and will not respond to "Relay Attacks". To wake it up, just walk towards the car and press Unlock as normal. Do this Lock-Lock to your spare key too, the one left in the front hall. Easy as pie. The Lock button will wear out twice as fast, but the battery will last for years.

The issue with making car theft harder is, that they turn to hijacking and catch you as you reverse out of your driveway. The issue with disabling keyless entry on Toyotas, is that you have to do the procedure everytime after a key is pressed on the remote - so that defeats the purpose.

People should be mindful of the fact that Faraday pouches and boxes are not forever, some pouches stop working after a month or so. I tested pouches that no longer worked, then decided on a box, in case sliding the fob in/out compromised the lining. My not cheap Faraday box was tested after 3 months to find it allowed me to start the car with the key in the box, despite careful use. There must be a plethora of people who would discover their Faraday box or pouch no longer works. Unlock the car, return the key to the pouch or box, get in the car and try to start it. I now use a Defender pouch and replace it every month regardless. £3 a month for peace of mind knowing the fob is protected from relay thieves. Nothing worse than believing your fob is protected from relay theft when it is not, and your car is not there one day.

When they use those relay units don’t they scan your house for the key to 1. Unlock the car without the key and 2. Start the car without the key? Good ideas - but what about ways thieves use to steal these vehicles without utilizing your FOB- pick the lock , once inside they download the security code from the car port under the dash and transfer it to a new FOB- I saw a video of this and it was done in 3 minutes

I disabled keyless entry on my Evoque. Caused the battery to go flat because for some reason it caused the rear number plate lights to stay on without me realising it. Had to call out Land Rover Assist twice. Re-enabled keyless entry and now OK. Know of same thing happening to another Evoque.

Put a heavy chain and padlock around the steering wheel then down around the pedals. Range Rover SVR along street has one. Small inconvenience to the owner. Has been looked at several times by thieves but they can't be arsed not to mention its under high end cctv sending notifications to the owner and behind a bolted gate.

The best free way to keep your car safe, especially on holiday if you have an automatic transmission if you remove an essential MOT required fuse, the horn fuse for example, the car can be started but won't let you take it out of park so can't be driven. There is no way a thief will know why its not shifting gear and they will have to give up.

After 18 months of use the Halfords Faraday pouch was found to be defective, this I found out by accident having started and parked the car with the key fob in the pouch. Repeated tests proved the pouch was no longer working. Subsequent investigation revealed that you regularly need to test the pouch for reliability if you carry it around and put in and out of a pocket. Felix how do you reset the Land Rover key remote to enable keyless entry once disabled?
@markboen

I encourage everyone to remove the fuse for your OBD port so thieves cannot connect and create a new key fob. Just hide the fuse in the car to reinstall if you ever need it.

Good tips. Security is always a compromise between strength and convenience. The stronger the security the less convenient it is to use it. I solve the problem of car theft by welding all the doors shut and removing the engine. It's not convenient but the car's never been stolen... 😂

i have a faraday pouch which is good and use it, i have cctv and automatrix tracker, what i fail to understand is how on earth can possibly MISS OUT the main thing thats stops the thieves from driving off in your car - A GHOST IMMOBILIZER, it is almost impossible to bypass and any thief hellbent on trying to remove it, will have to do enough damage to the cars electrical system to render it undrivable anyway

Hi folks. Turn your wheels into the curb. Or just make a new habit to always park ur car with turning ur wheels before shutoff plus use a steering wheel club too. Install a port lock AND an engine immobilizer plus a kill switch. Install a tracking system... NO GPS... that can be disabled by theives...such a simple cut on antenna = no more gps!!! Turn off the fob signal every time ... Look at your car....now picture it gone....yea, do all u can to layer deterrence so u can always see ur car!!! God bless all 🙏🕊🐾

I think if you are going to have a car like this you need a garage, ask your insurance company if it will reduce the premium were you to garage the vehicle. Having a tracker is recommended and well worth the money. As with anything of value you need to think of the security element and cost. An isolation switch could be useful to have and if fitted properly might pay for itself. Keeping keys inside your home is something to look at, maybe a decorative safe built into the the wall and given a fake mains cover for example. The spare keys should be accessible but not in an obvious place, maybe with a neighbour you can trust. Technology can be bypassed so take that into consideration. A krooklock might be handy so the handbrake cannot be released without a key. Take professional advice and also ask the local police if they have any information to assist you.

Insurance do ask where the vehicle is garaged, but they are asking what zip code you are parking it in. I was licensed in all 50 states, and none offered a discount for parking it in an actual garage. I suspect, this is due to the vehicle leaving that garage and being parked anywhere.

The best anti-theft system is the IGLA, which requires to touch some switches in sequence once you enter the vehicle, otherwise the car will NOT start, even if the thieves have the key! The other method is to hide a cutoff switch to the fuel pump! Less expensive than an immobiliser systems!
