About this video: the idea of naming those types 0, -1, -2. +1, +2 is not mine.
I got it from one Ukranian stylist. His name is Roman Medny. (He's also on KZfaq - for some of you who understands Russian language.) So he is also the one from whom I heard about Kibbe Body Types some years ago. So I was thinking about those types of contrast a lot and decided to make a big scale with women from all over the world and analyse them from that viewpoint. Also I cleared the definition, and decided to be more specific based on the definition. It's not perfect, there's no science to it. I'm sure in some time I will re-think some of them and maybe will be more specific. It all is pretty new for me too. That's how I do my researches - while editing my videos aahhaha. Anyway hope you enjoy ))) And don't take it too seriously. Let's just play the game!

🙋🏼 ABOUT ME: Hi guys! My name is Alyona. I was born in Russia. I'm a musician. And I love art, makeup, fashion, style and beautiful environments. I love playing with makeup and fashion, but at the same time, I’m quite a minimalistic person. I don't like the idea of being fixated on the body too much. I have an alternative and unconventional viewpoint on beauty, the body types and face shapes. I love helping other women find their "it" and finally discover their beauty and boost their confidence.
I have several series on my channel that you might be interested in such as: Body Types, Contouring, Makeup History and Makeup Transformations. Also some random beauty hacks about skin care, hair, nails and beauty in general.

DISCLAMER!!!! EVERY COUNTRY can have MANY COLORATIONS. It's not about geography at all! (Would be better if I just stick to celebrities in this case, I guess). It doesn’t mean that all women in India for example will be only plus one or plus two of course! It's just an example. Just wanted to embrace more people from all over the world. Also I wanted to FILL IN the scale. Once I worked on the video - I realised that +1 and +2 are filled in, but lighter contrast is not - that's why I got more blonds there for demonstration. Because there appeared to be much more different examples of +2 and +1 - that's why I put several African women in one category and didn't take many African countries - because in that category I also put women from Italy, Saudi, Japan, Greece and many more. It was filled. I did the research while I was filming the video. And then at the stage of editing I realised that it wasn't filled so i decided to get more -1 and -2 examples. I has nothing to do with nationalities. This is not "perfect science" or "ideal technology" or "all questions answered" kind of a video. It has nothing to do with 12 seasonal color analysis. It's confusing to me still this is why I've chosen this way. It's my first observation of contrast parameters on bodies based on the definition I cleared. Keep in mind that I used nationalities and women from different places on Earth ONLY to demonstrate different combinations of colorations and see more examples. I want you to see how dusty/clear you are and how dark/light. PS: I know that I mentioned Africa and shoed 3 different colorations from there, then I got specific ones from Morocco and Egypt. Only to show the diversity and types - not to do a "map of women" or "geography contrast" :)))

I understand and I like your scaling contrast idea (gave me a new way to see things) but Africa is not a country, so I feel like how you who got many women of specific countries (mainly white or light skin ones), it would of been nice if you did the same for the many women of African countries, after all look-wise Switzerland, Finland, Norway, Denmark they all looked very similar to me but they weren't grouped into one. The most common Africans outside of Africa are Nigerians, Ghanaian, and South Africans; whereas Egypt and Morocco are highly Arabic and have much in common with Mediterranean ancestry. Also, just my 2 cents but I feel that you mixed up chroma and contrast. Contrast is about the differences between elements, not about muted/grayness and clear/brightness.

We need to be reminded that our unique characteristics are what make us beautiful. As a middle eastern growing up in the US, all I wanted was blonde hair and blue eyes and to blend in like every other girl as my differences were not celebrated. To see women getting cosmetic work to all look the same only teaches our future generation that there is one type of beauty; big eyes and lips, an hourglass figure, and it is this misconception that makes us not appreciate qualities that stray from this standard. I gave thought about getting lip filler more times than I can count, along with other things. I’m all for freedom of choice to make yourself happy, and I don’t believe in judging others choices, we get scrutinized enough as women as it is! But it’s important to note that we could all love ourselves a little bit more, even with our thicker thighs or smaller, thinner lips. Confidence and self-love, things you cannot buy... are ultimately most beautiful. Love yourselves, beautiful ladies. ❤️

I think the African woman is actually a -2. Against a white background, yes, she's very high contrast, but if we're talking about JUST her own coloring, it is all very close to the same. Very, very dark skin, very dark hair and very dark eyes. So, we could say, just as a very fair girl with very pale eyes and hair is a -2 because her shades are all similar, the woman from Africa, because all of her features are similar in shade, she also would be -2 on your scale. Because contrast, as you explained, can be easily defined as difference in shade. I hope that makes sense.
@gittevandevelde2208
@gittevandevelde2208 4 жыл бұрын
Very dark skinned women tend to reflect white light tough, giving them a lot of white 'skinshine' or highlights in all kinds of lighting, and there are still the whites of the eyes. Both these factors makes them high contrast.
@Analysis_Paralysis
@Analysis_Paralysis 4 жыл бұрын
Even though what you say makes a lot of sense, people count them to high contrast because of the white in their eyes. I believe that's true because it suits them to wear clothing that has high contrast like black and white. Grey wouldn't look as good on deep black skin. :) I could be wrong, though!
@gittevandevelde2208

@@witchburial We're talking about the contrast between everything that's part of their body - so also their skinhighlights, whites of their eyes, teeth, insides of handpalms and bottoms of feet etc. (which tend to be a lot paler than the rest of the skin with dark-skinned people)
@aprillittle595
@aprillittle595 4 жыл бұрын
I see your point. I guess it depends on why you're analyzing or what you're analyzing. I'm a photographer, so I'm thinking, you know, if I'm strictly looking at the person against, say, a like-colored background, how much contrast is in my photo. Or, like Aly was doing, taking that down to a b&w photo, I would get soooo little contrast, really (unless her skin is shiny, her eyes are open and I have lots of "white of the eyes" showing, and she's smiling with her teeth). I'm thinking highest contrast is a very fair-skinned person with exceptionally dark hair and eyes or a dark-skinned person with very light hair and eyes. Striking contrast. But I can understand where you're coming from in terms of clarity of color and fashion or makeup, for instance.
@gittevandevelde2208

@@aprillittle595 even then, you can't deny very dark skinned people look their best in light colours, and that's the purpose here. This isn't about damn photography.

Certified stylist here, this is very late, but I hope this might help clear this out for other people. The very dark African woman is in fact a -2 in contrast if you’re talking about contrast level. If you put a black and white filter on her picture, you will see that the contrast level is pretty low. However, color theory in styling is more about what colors look best in people and not always about hard facts. The thing is, very dark people like her, look best in contrasting colors, if you actually put her in the -2 category, you would have to use colors that are very similar to her skin tone, and it would be a flattering as a high contrast level color like lime green. It is easier to put her in the +2 area, because you would be using those rules to style her. This is the reason most of the times if not all, people put very dark people in the high contrast level. Hoped this helped, great video Ally!😊
@khxliakhxlia3605

So basically they're low contrast but the color theories don't apply to our actual tones so we must place it in another category for it to work?
@cocoastyling
@cocoastyling 2 жыл бұрын
@@khxliakhxlia3605 Yes and no, when it comes to colors and how they interact with different features skin tone plays a major part in it because it would be the main feature. Beige and white is not the same thing as brown and white, it’s not a completely different system, but the rules change. When it comes to darker skin tones it’s not just about contrast; saturation, and color tolerance are also important.

Not necessarily the African woman has more contrast because her skin and eye color is contrasting with the whites in her and it’s very noticeable from a distance whereas those blondes in -2 have light skin and light eyes that blend with the whites which gives them very low contrast. Those woman wouldn’t be able to pull off black because it would overpower them and there’s no depth in they’re features. The only thing those woman share in common is that they’re eye, hair and skin color are the same/similar, but since they’re on opposite sides of skin color it has the opposite effect.

It's more about the depth of your skintone rather than if you have colors that contrast each other. Pale people are in the low range because they are more 'dull' and washed out while black skinned people have more depth and intensity to their color.

@lrose1310 4 жыл бұрын
Yea I'm kind of confused too. I think part of it is the intensity of the colors. As a photographer, I know high contrast will bring out the intensity of colors, while low contrast will fade colors. The Norwegian woman with pale skin, pale blonde hair and pale blue eyes looked more desaturated. While the African woman with the deep skintone and dark eyes looked much more rich in saturation. At least, that's the gist I'm getting. Again, still a bit confused.

I love that you touched on redheads here, as I find it's not included in many colour analysis videos. I often hear that people with cool complexions shouldn't dye their hair red because they have no warmth in their skin, but at least in the uk, where I'm from, natural redheads often have very cool complexions, so that never made much sense to me. I believe the intensity of the pigment in relation to your natural contrast level is more important, if you are looking to dye your hair red

Maybe not where she’s from, but where I’m from…especially “dusty.” It’s not being oversensitive that makes some people bristle at being referred to as “dusty!” As you well know, it means being dirty, out of style, unkempt, raggedy, old, broke etc., in the inner city U.S.

In Brazil you can find pretty much every ethnicity. But the majority of woman can be devided into to types of women: one has slightly tan skin + dark hair, and the other has lighter skin (more of a mediterranean look) with dark hair. But barely none of us have light eyes combined to tanned skin. That feature is just related to an exagerated version of "exotic" people that europeans seem to find. Carolina Kobayashi LoL 60 percent of Brazilians don’t see themselves as black, especially in Brazil where people would categorize themselves as anything but black. It’s actually 8 percent that classify themselves as black and then majority categorize themselves as mixed race or white. I don’t know why people try to constantly black wash Brazil. Sure there is a sizeable black population and most slaves went there, but that blood has been diluted for several reasons from miscegenation and forced immigration. Most Brazilians I’ve met I would not classify as black

Irma Ebene same case here. I loved the video but I’m kinda sad that out of 50+ countries she just put in ‘Africa’ as if we’re all a monolith with just those three skin tones. Would have been nice to see a few more African countries represented... but all in all, this is still a nice video.

Yeah,i was shocked when she said Africa and pick 3 women from 54 countries in Africa while other continents he mentioned by countries. I felt like she was trying to be seen as inclusive.atleast if she did east Africa,North Africa,central Africa,south Africa and west Africa.that will condense the number of women to choose since they are have similar features in each category.anyways she is more families with blonds so won't bother much.however her research is appreciated.

Here we go ofcourse there has to be some victimization of Africa for any video about ethnicities. The reason why there was one or two more European women shown is because Europe has more diversity in their characteristics despite what main stream media says. With Africans there is not much diversity in how they look. By that I mean you typically wouldnt find a red head with green eyes and black hair with blue and over a dozen variations in skin tone. But you have that in Europe no doubt. How much different would it be to compare Zambian with Mozambique or south africa? Could you atleast look at the reason for things objectively and not filter them by your own political agenda. You wanting her to add more African countries when it would not have served the purpose of her video is racist. It's racist because you're showing preferential treatment and are not acknowledging the diversity in other regions you just more black women in the video. But that's how a lot of African Americans think. It's not fascist for them to say "white people" all the time and have their own tv channel. But a video analyzing women all around the world and it not being " black" enough for you is beyond racist

dawn ella27 No offense but I didn’t see any difference with the women from Finland, Sweden or Denmark? It would make sense if she just contrasted North vs South Europe where the difference is obvious, otherwise you yourself are just nitpicking the looks. They look different to you because you are European, but for me they looked, aside from Greece and Italy, very very similar and I would have trouble differentiating their looks. Even France looked similar to me, she just has darker hair. Greece and Italian was the one who truly looked different to me with their Mediterranean/Southern Europe looks. What difference was there? If you want to say Europeans are diverse because of hair and skin color that’s dumb because any European country can have blonde/different color hair and different eye colors, just look at the royal family of Spain. This video isn’t even about different European look because she did it by country, and any European country can have their version of s European look. She would have just called it Europe. No, most Africans don’t look alike ifs just your own perspective that says that. There is definitely a difference between a southern African with Khoisan genes ( lighter skin and a more stereotypical Asian look), to a Guinean ( darker skin more sahelian look), to a Amharic look or even a South Sudanese look.This isn’t even including island countries or historically admixed groups like Tuaregs... She also did separate videos for Asian countries. There are instagram pages where Africans have to guess girls pictures based on countries and most people guess accurately for a reason

Hi, a Spanish woman here! Although I think you're pretty right overall about the Spanish complexion, I'd say that in the northern part of the country there are many 0 to -1 women. An explanation for this is kind of the same as in northern European countries such as Norway or Sweden. Because in provinces such as Galicia, Asturias or the Basque Country (to name a few) is always raining and there isn't so much sun, people in these regions tend to be paler with lighter hair. Al of my dad's family are super pale and we all have blond hair and blue, green or grey eyes. This was such an informative and interesting video, keep it up with the good content!

@@ecclesiaxxi6210 The Moors left no genetic impact (plus, most of them were just converted native population), and they only stayed for almost 800 years in the region of Granada. Don't know what the other comment is about, there was an invasion, and yes, there made native women their slaves, but since they invadinng people were so few in comparison with the natives, and because all the offspring of those Christians slaves would adopt the muslim faith of their father, it was actually the muslim community, and not the Christian one, that got really really mixed, to the point that actually most muslims had way more native iberian genetics than north african. They were all thrown out of the country in 1600's, though around a 2000 remained in Spain. They were forced to move weswards, towards Portugal and western Spain. Again, they were still genetically speaking mostly just native iberian, with some but little North African admixture. Results are, Genetics studies are very clear about it, genetics in SPain varies from east to west, being the east region "less mixed", while the western region is "more mixed". There's no much difference notrth-south for obvious regions, southern Spaniards are just Northern Spaniards who migrated to those lands from the North. Period. People from Southern Spain are virtually the exact same people that lives in the North, they literally are originally from Northern Spain. The actual North African admixture in Spaniards is around 5% of the Spanish genetics. It is actually the highest one in Europe, only after Portugal. However, it is worth noticing the the "dates" in which these genetics were introduced in the Peninsula do no coincide with the time of Al-Ándalus (which again, makes sense, because there was religious segregation, it was the muslims who got super mixed due to slavery of Christian women, they were a minority, so their genetics were almost absorbed by the native genetics, most of them were native Christians who had converted to Islan, and they were eventually forced to leave Spain). The North African admixture in Spain comes mostly from 2 historical periods. The first one would be pre-roman, and most specialists point to the Phoenitian Empire, since, though it was originally from the Middle East, had a lot of settlements in Northern Africa, and there was a lot of trade between those settlements and the Peninsula. Other point out that it could be from the Cathagenian Empire, that it could have been from an early and small North African group that had arrived to the Peninsula and mixed with the Iberian tribes, and some other point out that it could have actually arrived in the early stages of the Roman Empire (a theory that I find pretty logical, tbh). The second wave of North African genes into the Iberian Peninsula dates back to 1700's which was the moment when slave market what at its peack, so I think we can confirm that some of the North African ancestry in Spaniards comes from free slaves of the 18th century.

I just hate the notion of downgrading the LITERAL most diverse continent to a country in a video of comparing countries and how women look. It’s tiring. I’m not mad or upset or anything because this happens a lot I just wish she could’ve added more and she already explained why she didn’t.

I worked for a cosmetic company in the late 1980's which was created by an artist. It was based on similar color theory - that the most important factor in picking cosmetic & clothing colors was based on contrast (light, dark, cool, warm, neutral, and vivid) along with tone (yellow, peach, tan, blue). It was a hard sell, only lasted a few years, but made so much sense to me!

An interesting study (must have taken forever.) Growing up and living in an area where there are many nationalities, it is impossible to know what the original genetic origin might have been. I will say that I was shocked to realize (from a magazine photo) that there are actually people with white (as a piece of paper) and black (as ink) skin. My observation is that people with the whitest skin generally have that flaming red hair. The other type of red head is the auburn type which usually has peach to golden skin, very black eyes and freckles. They actually identified the gene number for this. Someday they may prove your chart with the genetic info as well.

waaaaaah I'm so happy that you mentioned Scotland! I am a Scottish redhead with hazel eyes, I am quite pale-skinned but I learned from your videos about my warm undertones and it has totally changed the way I style my makeup and outfits! But yes in Scotland we have the largest amount of redheads in the world apparently. I also learned from your Kibbe videos to appreciate my softness so much more (I think I am theatrical romantic but I'm also still confused as hell) and instead of being sad at my lack of angular features I see now that my softness is my greatest asset. I look exactly how I am supposed to. I love the way that you show love to all of the colourations and body types. Basically I am new to your channel and so freakin glad I found you!! You got it wrong, the Malaysian example is mid contrast and the African is low contrast....contrast is not based on the overall lightness or darkness of ones’ coloration but on the general or overall difference in the lightness and darkness of one’s general coloration.... The African example has dark hair, dark skin, and dark eyes ~ low contrast since there is not much difference in the colors, the white of the eyes occupies so little space to be the determining factor....The malaysian lady has tan/olive skin, dark eyes, and muted black hair - that’s mieium contrast..... even the Indian examples are medium contrast etc......snow white is what is considered high contrast....
