Developing your own film is an easy way to save money. There's some initial investment, but once you get a changing bag and developing tank, the costs are quite low. (you'll also need a thermometer and measuring cups) And if you do caffenol instead of commercially-produced developer, you can save even more money. Also, developing your own film is fun!

Excellent tips! Great minds think alike - I just recorded a saving money on film photography video yesterday.

I’ve almost been shooting exclusively fujicolor C200 the last few months in an effort to save a bit on film. Cheap as chips, fine grain and in the right lighting conditions looks gorgeous, especially blue hour when using a tripod those cool Fuji tones really pop.

I use older digital cameras like the D40X and a 2005 Original Ricoh GR digital camera. I also use an Oppo A17 Smartphone with a great onboard camera and editing suite. I have a card uploader that I can put SD cards in and edit and upload to Facebook photography groups. I do have a Ricoh KR10 film camera with 28 and 50 mm K mount lenses . I develop my own film with Rodinal developer diluted one to fifty which is super economic.

One camera we bought, was a instax evo mini hybrid camera best of both worlds and can be used as a printer (instax mini format) for smartphone photos. Can’t wait for the pen ft review, they look tempting compared to pen f and fv.

My personal tips for saving a bit of money. 1, develop film your self, it is easy and the development tank will pay for itslef fast. Especially easy for black and white. 2, if you shoot a lot printing or sanning yourself can be useful. Especially printing is really fun, and while not super cheap it will be cheaper than having labs print your film. 3, bulk load film. 4, if you don't use all the cameras you have then you have too many. (Unless it is something like a kodak instant camera that is next to impossible to actually use anymore.) 5, Think, does your pictures really need color, sometimes they might but if not companies like foma, AgfaPhoto or kentmere have really cheap film. Bulk loaded foma film is probably the cheapest you can get (unless you roll down from 1000 foot rolls of kodak doubble x.)

The one camera out and one camera in is a very good way to save some money. I did that until I got the cameras I think I will hold on to or will never gonna sell. It streamlines your collection and you use them more as opposed to them just sitting in your cabinet. Thanks Lucy!

Great video! The lesson I have learnt is that be open to anything. Learn and adapt to whatever helps you and overcome mental blocks we have against many things. Channels like @onemonthtwocameras show that technology or budget is not at all a barrier. I shoot with phone in places where cameras are out of place. I have even started experimenting with Lightroom to edit digital photos to get the look I want. We will have to adapt as film supply is limited and just cannot shoot as much as we want.

You mentioned it at the end of the video, but it really reduces costs and is fun at the same time. Ok, the scanning bit of this process is maybe not THAT fun, but developing film is easy and everybody can do it, especially bw-films. Love your KZfaq channel and podcasts. Keep it up! ⭐️

Lucy, some good tips here. But hard to resist buying another film cam. Just have to reach that cutoff point when you have all the quality or lenses you need. Film cost is partly a function of numbers, when film users still lag behind digital users. If you someday travel to Japan where film use is still strong, you would find an incredible range of film choices at reasonable prices (converting Yen to $). Because digital is the main rage in N America or Australia, film makers do not make or offer many choices. Thus, price per roll gets higher. But if you go to Tokyo, Japan you will be amazed at the camera shops. Keep up the good videos and lovely smiles. 😊

one other tip, for saving money, get a good tripod, Cable release (electic or mechanical, whatever one your camera is compatable with); also get high asa film (so you can use higher shutter speeds in lower light), use a digital camera to meter the scene, and use mirror-up mode; all of these make shure you GET the shot, in focus, & sharp, no motion blur, so what you shoot is a KEEPER, not a 'waster', this means you get an output, so value for the money spent on the film stock, and gear. also a tip, use a CHEAPER stock than the 'standard' one for you, to test gear, a new camera, lens, film back (MF/LF), just in case of failure, then you haven't wasted too much of an expensive film.

You can also save money by using a digital cam to scout out locations to check if a location is going to be good enough to go back to shoot film. Specially when shooting larger format cameras.

Some great advice! Half frame cameras are good, I recently got a Mercury II (I'll admit a bit of an odd camera) and it's great to get twice the photos on one roll, altho it did make me take twice as many photos as usual! I was just testing it though so normally it should be quite an economical camera to use. I've so far stuck with the cheap film stocks since I've only gotten into film photography and photography in general pretty recently, and I've had no issue with them. With digicams I used to dislike them coz they're the cameras my family uses to take annoying posed family photos with fake smiles but at a family gathering we discovered my aunt's had this setting where it takes 6 photos and applies random effects to them, which ended up being pretty fun seeing what it would do. I also tried taking some more candid photos which again was much more fun than the usual dull posed photos.

Also, I'm so over the digicam range from the old days, but ... older higher end digital cameras are real steals and won't lead to regret of low quality images for something special. When I get a studio space re-established, I'll probably try to get an old CCD medium format back because CCD colors are extremely film-like.

Great tips! I'm currently changing my hobbies quite a bit due to a move. Since I no longer have access to a workshop I'm getting rid of my blacksmithing stiff since the whole anvil and forge thing don't really fit with a one bedroom apartment. Still haven't decided on darkroom stuff. Antone want a Patterson tank?

For me, I only shoot 35mm black and white film, black and white and color medium and large format. For color “35mm”, I am shooting digital Nikon Df.

I use Portra 400 for my colour work and Ilford Delta 400 for my black & white work. I'm more likely to shoot colour in good sunny weather and black & white in dark cloudy weather.

I've been keeping the number of film bodies I have down. I try to keep only one film body per lens mount. In the end I feel like the camera body doesn't change the way the photos look that much, and it's one less body I need to worry about or send for maintenance. I also share my lenses with a digital body with the same mount so that way I can practice on the lens first before I put it on my film body. Digital bodies are expensive, but I love the ones I have and now you can get a 35mm ("full frame") digital body for under $1000 US and use your manual lenses on it. You don't need the super fast AF on the newer digital bodies since you're manual focusing anyway and some of the "vintage" 35mm digital bodies like the Canon 5D classic or Nikon D700 have nice ways of making their photos look. The Nikon Z5 or original Z6 are also nice options for those rangefinder lenses. The Z5 and Z6 original are often available here in the states for good prices refurbished, not sure about down under. Through the pandemic I shot all my manual lenses on digital, then I learned to develop my own film because the developing costs so much here! I recommend getting used, and that's how I got my digital bodies for a lot less It's funny how people say that digital bodies get "outdated" or will be broken down in "two or three years" but the truth is I find that the old stuff is still pretty good and it still takes great photos. My main Nikon digital body is almost 10 years old, and it's an absolute treat to use. I love how it feels when I use it with my manual lenses. Nikon has been using the same EN-EL15 battery in a lot of those older models as in the new models so the batteries aren't going anywhere. The electronics are pretty tough too, and probably tougher than a lot of the earlier electronics in some of our beloved electronic film cameras. I know a pro here who is still shooting her Nikon D800 alongside her new Z. She uses manual lenses on it and says it works awesome so why stop using it I do a lot of my experimental stuff on my digital bodies and when the effect comes out right I do the same thing with my film bodies. This way I can really play with the effect I'm trying to get and make sure it's working and I don't waste too much film on it. I've gotten a ton more keepers on film this way and don't feel so bad because I shot so many pictures that didn't work out Also you should check out One Month Two Cameras she does tons of reviews of classic digital cameras. She's super cool!!

Excellent video, and very good points. Especially mixing in some digital photography! I've been shooting since the mid 1970's and film is still may main jam, but I also have fun with my Sony A7ii and especially my iPhone. Being a purist is something this old retired guy can't afford these days!

Great tips! Two things that also don't get mentioned enough: 1. Warming and cooling filters. With a less expensive film stock, the right filter might give a look that is close enough to a more expensive film. Filters are usually inexpensive, too. Photographers used them back in the day, why not now too? 2. Invest in a CLA and/or repairs for your current cameras before buying another one. Personally, this one has helped me A LOT. A CLA can make a night and day difference with some cameras, especially old mechanical cameras. Even if a camera does work at all shutter speeds, it doesn't mean it's working as well as it should. Also, selling a CLA-ed camera does way more for the film community (and possibly your wallet) than selling another half-working/sluggish film camera.

I've just picked up a half frame 1960s Olympus Pen, in mint condition, so out of a 36 exp film I get at least 72 photos. Another thing I look for is out of date film stock 2nd hand usually goes for reasonable money. They're my 2 tips.

No doubt, cheaper film stocks are - and always have been a good solution (especially if you can get a brick at a fair price). And, I do really need to stop adding to my camera collection... I'm also with you on using digital cameras to save money. I do it a bit different though. I have an older Nikon full frame DSLR, I bought second hand earlier this year, that takes the same lenses as the ones I use on my Nikon SLR(s). Even though it's an older DSLR ("only" 24MP), I really enjoy shooting with it. I also have a smaller Sony A58, that I bring, when I don't have room for the full frame beast. Sony a-mount cameras are based on Minolta AF SLR cameras and lenses, so I can use old Minolta AF lenses. As a Minolta fan-boy, I love the idea of still shooting Minolta tech - even if it's branded as Sony... Sure, it's not film or pocketable like the digicams, but it's a camera with access to prime lenses, zoom lenses and so on, and I can shoot with lenses developed for film cameras - that's not so bad. The side hustles aren't possible for me with my day job, but that's okay for me.

For those who don't know it yet: there is a way to kind of merge film and digital photography in the sense, that you shoot digitally, but you not only will get an outcome which is very, very close to film, but also have to endure the slowness of film photography: Sigma's Foveon sensor cameras. Those cameras are not cheap (in fact they are slowly turning into searched rarities) but they are absolutely worth the money. If you are interested, there are lots of videos here on KZfaq about them. Another tipp for the rare breed of people who shoot sheet film (a.k.a. large format): to save costs, try shooting onto photographic paper instead. I do that exclusively and add to that a reverse process in development so that I get paper positives (not Harman Direct, though) and thus create unique originals which you can sign and hang on a wall. There are also lots of videos on that on KZfaq.

My journey with film has barely started. Got myself a sweet Nikon F90X (N90S) with a 35-70 kit lens and right after that a 50mm 1.8D, shot only about 15 rolls so far. I'm a bit bummed that I found this cool hobby so late, yes, the prices are high, but I'm lucky enough to have a Fujifilm retailer in my hometown in Europe, so C200 and Superia 400 are always there to buy, velvia and provia too, for decent price. Also ColorPlus 200 is really available here and that's a bit odd for me nonetheless. I shot some decent stuff so far, and I don't plan on stopping until a roll is 30-40 dollars lol. I really love your videos and your way of explaining things! P.S. also redscale film is an interesting topic that I really think would be something you would enjoy, maybe you already did a video about this and I don't know 😅

Awesome tips Lucy. Right now I'm saving up allot simply cus there is very little film availability in 35mm. Unfortunately I'm saving cus of low supply.

one other 'saving' is to buy a bulk roll, and load cartridges at home, one $150 or so bulk roll furnishes 10-12 rolls, in camera, so saves 25 dollars Per cartridge, and having to get 5 packs every time.

Recently just bought a 1/2 Frame camera to try out. Risking it by getting it on eBay so let's see. It could be fun for days out with friends when I want to have a camera on hand just to capture some nice moments. Then for proper photowalks or intended snaps, I'll use my SLR. I. have two broken Minolta's and nowhere to fix it. Anyone think it's worth selling for parts on eBay?

I have a tip, two really but one will be ignored, I recently went back to film, having lost a Minolta Alpha/Dynax/Maxxum 700si in 2007 in a divorce I bought a Minolta Alpha/Dynax/Maxxum 7 with a 50mm 1.4 lens and 5400 high speed flash and vertical grip for 540 AUD (the Minolta cameras were called Alpha in Japan and the Japanese model has the little Alpha symbol now used by Sony). I have used more than half my first roll of Kodak Ektar in a blink of an eye, so went on EBay to get more film, originally I bought a two pack of Fuji 200 iso which was going to cost $46 dollars to be delivered to Australia then after paying for that, I was reorganising my open tabs in a web browser and found exactly the same 2 roll Fuji film product at an Australian camera store for less than half that price, luckily I was able to cancel the eBay order. Point being check your own country stock before running to eBay or everywhere else, and the Australian store I purchased from has an eBay store but that roll of film wasn’t on their eBay store I might point out the processing place I will use is relatively local but still requires mail order and they do pro-res scans at a reasonable cost in fact cost is similar to what it was 20 years ago apart from the postage fees. My second tip, I don’t understand the move to low resolution digicams and so on from a photography point of view considering that most of us have a smartphone, of course even with an iPhone 13 I can’t change aperture and so on but nor can you with your cheap point and shoot digital what I don’t have is a pro-digital camera because getting the good lenses was cheaper going the film route but I recently discovered the Sony SLT A99 will take the Minolta lenses so if I can the next lens I will get will be the Zeiss 24-70 stm zoom which the Minolta Alpha 7 can use, but if I can’t manage that the Minolta G equivalent, then later the Sony A99 body, but any point and shoot digital pictures, videos can be handled by the iPhone and edited, even pro edited on an iPad with affinity so don’t understand digicams and since this was about saving money………..🫡

These are super practical tips! I think the best way to save money is to avoid buying new cameras monthly. Unfortunately, I can't 😂 Next week I'll be off for 20 days for a photographic road trip and I've spent so much on film rolls.. I guess I will starve to save enough money to cover my debts!

I must admit - I spend most of my cash on film and self dev. Ne cameras are nice but honestly I'm not a 35mm fan and love my Yashica TLR that has been enough for me for a decade! Recently picked up a Pentax 645 and LOVE that too. I'm happy with two film cameras! Oh I have a Wide Instax too. OK I have THREE cameras 😅Honestly though - the camera is just a tool. Spend on time mastering image making!

I think the no. 1 tip for people who shoot quite a bit has to be bulk loading, especially for black and white. The cost of a 30.5m tin of film can be as low as US$60 which gives about 19 rolls of film at a little over US$3/roll. Even factoring the cost of bulk loader and canisters, savings are seen pretty quickly. My no. 2 tip would be to develop and scan yourself. The cost of developing equipment and chemicals isn't that expensive and will pay for itswelf very quickly. With cheaper developers like Rodinal, it could cost around 50c to develop a roll. The same is applicable to colour as well, except the only colour film available in bulk is Kodak Vision 3 cinema stock. This can't however be developed at most labs as the film has a remjet backing which needs to be removed before developing. It's easy to wash at home though before developing in a C41 kit.

Mix it up, digital is practical and can be very compact (todays phones some are impressive, on a small screen at least). Save the best for last. The developing experimenting (pushing!) is part of the ritual/fun. Never developed a single roll of film myself, yet I think I can relate to the process 😀 Though owned a few film cams (Pentax Espio, MZ50 and Fuji miu aps film camera).

Shoot real b&w (400 TMAX in 120, Mamiya 645). Develop yourself (Kodak Xtol). Digital camera scan with macro lens. Inkjet print (Epson graphics arts Ecotank). Inexpensive path to really learn all the steps of traditional film photography. Oh, and to scratch that Leica M6 itch on the cheap: Panasonic GX85, TTArtisan 17mm f1.4. And print. Commit the image to paper, however you get there. That’s when it becomes real.

i only buy SLR's at thrift shops, so far ive found a Canon a1 and a minolta SRT 102, the canon was only the body so i put 50$ in lenses, the minolta came with 6 lenses and was 45$ so i got 2 SLR's and 12 vintage lenses for less then 100$, i got lucky :)

We should know our current film camera inside out before even thinking about buying another one. Inside out takes a lot of time. Great shots are the reward of patience.

But film photography is my cheap hobby (compared to cars and mountain biking). Lol. Shooting black and white is my main way of saving. My problem has been less buying cameras and more lens. I am happy with my collection of 35mm (just want to add a Pen F and try out a Fed2 versus the Zorki4 I have). Then add a medium format or two. There are only so many cameras I can shoot.

I've been struggling around here cause I can only find 120 film so I'm basically stuck with my medium format camera shooting portra 400 😅 I'm only shooting 35mm on my half frame camera to maximize the few 35mm rolls I can grab

I just sold and got $5500 dollars for my Digital cameras and lenses. I used the money for a Hasselblad 503 CW to replace one I lost in a lake also bought other film stuff. I am all film for my serious work. I shoot everything from 35mm to 6x6 and 4x5. I did keep my iPhone and Olympus Digital Pen F.

Patience saves a lot of money.

LOL. As Im watching/listening to this….. I buy a Olympus AF-1 two Wednesday’s ago. My first 35mm camera in over 20 years. I now have a Yashica T3 deliver today from ebay and have a Contax TVS on the way from Japan. That’s 3 film cameras in 1 month. I think I have a problem.

For me the goal is to break down and sell the kit that I don't need. On the list to sell are 1 TLR, 3 compact pocket film cameras, 1 lens, 2 old flashes and some other random stuff like a mattebox and follow focus that I don't use. That leaves me with five 35mm lenses, one 35mm body, one medium format lens, one medium format SLR, one tripod, one flash, and various other small accessories... is that too much kit? ...I still need a waterproof camera cover, one 15mm super wide angle lens, the rest I can rent or borrow.

Slowing down saves money. Shooting less is often more. Surrounding the motive to look for the best angle and take only one shot. Or none at all if it not worth it.

Expired-film has been my go to since I started developing & scanning my own film 2 years ago. Just make sure the seller has had them properly stored.

These felt more like tips to... stop shooting so much film 😭 I love older digicams too, but it's so much work to edit each file to make it look good compared to film frames that a lot of the shots end up sitting in the SD card for weeks or months at a time.

One tip from a seasoned camera hoarder: Don't gamble on cameras, don't buy a "for parts" camera on eBay unless you're absolutely sure you can fix it. I've wasted way too much money like this.

No.1? That is going to be hard for me. I recently picked up n Olympus XA for $3. That has now started me collecting point and shoot cameras. Being a Nikon user I had to have a Nikon l35AF. Serious money for a point and shoot. And that has led me to add mid 50s 35mm cameras and they are not $3. I also have a Mamiya C330 and a mid 50s Agfa folding medium format camera. My main film camera is a Nikon F2.
