Dogs can be wonderful for ADHD brains!
But a lot of these benefits depend on you having a good relationship with your dog, so make sure you choose one that’s right for you and your family. Do as much research ahead of time as possible and make sure you meet your new family member in person before you commit!

WARNING: There are many “registries” that are essentially scams. You do NOT need to register your emotional support animal, or have a vest or ID card for them. All you need is a letter from your doctor or therapist explaining why you need one.
For service animals, which autistic people often benefit from, you do not need a vest either, although many handlers choose to use one. What makes a service dog a service dog is the specialized training they go through to provide a specific task or tasks to assist with their handler’s disability and be able to behave in public places.

Hello brains!! There were a few small glitches in the video we couldn't get rid of, it's pretty new technology so bear with us :D ALSO -- I explained as much as I could in the video without it going on too long, but there's a lot more to service dogs and emotional support animals and finding a good fit -- check out the links in the description, and if you have any questions post them here and Alex (HowlingEclipse on YT) who works with dogs and helped out with this episode might be able to answer them for you!

Animals are awesome. SO MANY FLUFFIIIEES in the video. On a serious note when i left the Army i was given two Service Dogs. One that was rescued from the war zone and had been a trained Army dog and aone trained here in the states. They were amazing. SGT Hank the Army dog was old and war torn but would use his body a push me out of bed when i didn't want to move. Lil Tommy was the younger and more wild of the two. Hank passed on and Tommy is somewhere else helping another person . I miss them both.

No worries, we're not our parents so we can handle a few glitches. :) This is one of my favorite H2ADHD videos because of all the dogs! I'm working toward getting a service dog, and you're right that it's cool to take your dog everywhere, but the downside is that you HAVE to take your dog EVERYWHERE. Still, a small price to pay if I can get out there and trust people and places and things and have a life and a job again.

It’s not fair to give us a 360 video! you know how easily we get distracted! So hard to focus on listening, with so much stuff around 😂😂 Jokes aside, this is SO cool! I love it when you upload, and after you quit your job to do this full time, it’s so clear to see how much extra effort you put in making and editing for us. Absolutely love it, keep doing what you do ❤️

Thank you for talking about the difference of an esa and a service dog! I know a few service dog handlers that have a lot of problems with ESA pets because people think that they can bring their esa everywhere. (Side note: if you fake a service dog and get caught you get fined and you may have to serve jail time)

I'm seeing so many people just bringing their dogs everywhere and it is such bs. Sometimes they're not even on leashes but I dont really see anyone but me around that really has a problem with it. I'm sorry but it makes me kinda nervous I'm going to step in poo while I shop for bread or that one will scare my son because 98% of them are very obviously NOT trained service dogs. I think no one says anything because they dont want to offend anyone but I have to be super vigilant all the time because I have no idea what kind of training any of these "not service dogs" have. Just leave your furry friend at home for an hour while you go shopping or eat at a restaurant, m'kay?

I started walking and training my Mothers dog as she lives nearby. I learned that dogs and ADHD have alot in common, and that thinking about a dog feeling bad because you didn't walk it is a great motivator for exercise.

Sometimes pets can know how we feel before we recognise it. I had a cat who would come for cuddles and sitting with me, before I got overwhelmed by feelings, and as a consequence, the overwhelm was reduced and almost manageable. She did it without training, she was an intuitive girl. Her effect on my life was immense.

I'm a 17 year old Dutch girl with ADD, I started driving lessons a few months ago and I recently found myself struggling with driving. I had a test driving exam and the examiner told me that I need to learn how to focus more. I struggle with seeing road signs on time (sometimes I don't notice a sign and drive somewhere I'm not allowed to be), identifying a dangerous situation on time (the examiner told me that I drive in dangerous situations unnoticed and then panic because I don't know or struggle to fix the situation), following instructions that are unclear and/or forgetting them (I often had to ask 'is this the road I need to follow? Do I need to go right or left? etc.') and focusing on the road when someone is taking to me or when I'm thinking about something. My ADD doesn't affect me that much in my daily life because I follow routines and there are only 7 people in my class so focusing is not that hard (I do struggle a lot with focussing in bigger classes). My question is if someone has any tips for me and if you could possibly do a video on this topic?

Fellow Dutchie here with exactly the same problems, but at that time I didn't know I had ADHD. I hope you passed by now, but for others what helped: driving "from sign to sign" (rij van verkeersbord naar verkeersbord) to keep you focused on the signs that applies to the current situation (but also eyes on the road of course). Take time to physically practice gear shifts, even just sitting at home on the couch. Ask your instructor to tackle one new thing per lesson and repeat that thing until it becomes routine. Ask the instructor to keep the infomatiom simple and not talk incessantly. When you're later driving on your own, ask a trusted person to sit next to you and help you out in difficult situations by talking you through it if needed. And practice practice practice in quiet situations. And surprisingly: ADHD may also mean you're a pro in real emergencies! I was faster to respond than my instructor when another driver made a dangerous mistake.

OMG yes! When I first started driving I had issues like this too. It does get easier with practice. When I first started I ran off the road or hit random things in the road so often that the people at the tire shop were on a first name basis with me. And my driving instructor had a very thick accent and was a bit hard to understand at times; which of course only made things worse. I am a much much better driver now! I know it's frustrating, but with practice you will get better. It just takes time.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, for differentiating between an emotional support animal and a Service (Assistance) Dog. As someone who depends on my service dog, it means so much that people take the time to research and share the rules/differences. I learned pretty quickly that having an animal that depends on me when I can't even take care of myself just leads to me neglecting the poor thing. I got a dog shortly after my husband and I settled into our first house together. I grew up with dogs in the country and they were a great sense of comfort to me after the stress of school, so I assumed having one in the house would provide a similar comfort, plus it would help me be more active, i.e. walks in the local park. However, I soon realized I was struggling to keep to a schedule for feeding or taking her out to potty. I also wasn't walking her, so she spent a lot of time cooped up and became destructive. Basically I was neglecting her as much as I tend to neglect myself. As much as I hated to, I wound up giving her away to someone who was looking for a second dog to keep their other one company so she would have a better life. It saddens me, because I love animals, and could really use an ESA for my anxiety attacks, but when I can't even remember to feed *myself* half the time and get anxious just walking out into the yard, it's not really an option.

Thank you for this comment. People would really have you believe managing a dog and ADHD is butterflies and bubble gum. I'm almost at the point of giving up my dog too. I see how she's helping me but when she's also a large source of stress, that's really difficult to deal with.

Yesterday I was going through a bad adhd meltdown and was almost about to enter the full blown depression state, then after having my bus delayed for 2 hours more, I saw a man showing love and care to his dog and it was beautiful to see. So beautiful it instantly snapped me out of the depression I had and now I know why that is so thank you for making this video! 👍

All jokes aside this video really hits home for me and I've been trying to get my parents to understand everything basically in this video. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to convince them though I know the benefits for me would be numerous. One of their arguments was a cultural one. In their Indian culture they don't believe animals should be kept as pets but have free will to roam where ever they desire and if they themselves choose to come back then it is their decision on their own time and terms so it is more like a friend than a pet; and that pets aren't supposed to be kept in the house for hygiene purposes. I still aspire to have a dog in the future when I am living on my own. Eventually, I will be in California and I think a dog would help me emotionally be away from home and the stress of a new environment. Of course, I would buy it here in Mass and get used to caring for it before I moved. Just expressing myself. Thanks for the video Jess. You always find a way to deliver to the tribe.

CutiePieZapZap do you have an animal shelter nearby? I volunteer at a shelter and a few of our volunteers come from families or cultures that do not believe in having pets in the home. Volunteering lets them get an animal "fix" and enjoy the benefits of being around animals until they are in a position to get an animal on e they are on their own. It also helps educate them on what is needed to own and care for the various types of animals if they were not raised in a family where the info was taught by the parents for whatever reason.

Great video! I came across something that I thought would be a great video! As a pediatrician I’ve had lot of parents come in with teens and pre teens who they feel are mentally delayed. They play with toys still and do younger child like things. I have adhd myself so I began thinking to myself and realized I was also somewhat delayed at 13-14. Cartoons, played with toys still... so I’ve been googling stuff and it seems to be a trend that most aren’t told about. Think for parents and others a video about this would be really amazing!

I spent so much of the time staring in envy of the cute doggies and kitties I couldn't find the video. I was upside down and backwards staring at a blue screen, but I heard every word. My husband was offered a support pet for autism but never knew they'd offer one to me for ADHD. Thank you. 🐱

Hi jessica :) I'm a 27 year old from Tel-aviv, Israel. my whole life I've being bombarded with repetitive words every person with Adhd hears quite often, such as: "potential", "lazy", "Unorganized" and so on.. after going from my own initiative to diagnose my Adhd, I also came across your channel. I literally cried while watching your ted talk because I felt like you were describing me and how I felt throughout life so far. I Don't know if telling that a person is genuine, is a distinct Adhd characteristic. nonetheless, I could clearly see the struggles you went through while also admiring the strength it took to overcome them. Thank you so much for inspiring the rest of us to do the same!

My psychiatrist's diagnosis last week gave me the permission to think/say I might have ADHD. Your videos give me the understanding, recognition and validation to accept that I do have ADHD. I'm 32, and I've finally found the missing piece to understanding why my waking hours are a cognitive terf war. Thank you so much. I promise to pay your kindness forward. And armed with knowledge as I now am, I actually believe I'll be able to keep it!

Thank you for this video! Love watching your stuff, always learning new techniques and learning that there are actually terms for things! A few months ago my bf, while working from home (which is more rare than I wish it was), asked if it helps having him home because I seemed more able to accomplish tasks. Turns out, the body double thing is great for me. Gosh I need to find someone who can come over when he's at work to be a body double sometimes haha. Oh and if people are looking for emotional support companions, the people over at Kitten Academy are amazing. I don't think they specify any kind of emotional support stuff, but they have a 24/7 live stream of their foster kittens which is super helpful for calming me down when things are hard, others might find it helpful too if they can't have pets for whatever reason. A lot of people in their discord say its been helpful for them also. Oh and they adopt out all the kittens through the local shelter but people can apply from all over the US. kzfaq.infolive

Hey, my name and is Jordan. I'm a fellow brain with anxiety. I watched a lot of videos and as you can tell I'm quite new to the channel. You've given me a lot of good knowledge behind ADHD and incite into what other things I might also have ( like poor motor skills syndrome, I very clumsy, I nearly broke my ankle on how clumsy I am 😂) and I thank you for all that you've done. You make me wanna learn more about my ADHD, on what it really is, how it works, how it effects my brain. I wanna learn it all. But of course I gotta take one step at a time. I know this work can be stressful but just relax as best as you can and try not to get frustrated. I love the work that you do for all of us brains out there. Keep it going! Do your best!!

Great confirmation/celebration of the value of dogs to us (ok - having to go “walkies” when I don’t feel like it does at least get me outside for the therapeutic benefits that brings). Not so sure about the anthropomorphisation bit though - I tend to meet animals half-way, get to understand their POV (hence I’ve been successful as an occasional “whisperer” - the Bonanza song got it wrong). Speaking of POV I was amazed by the way you used 360 - had me scrolling to see backwards and check out the lighting setup. Wow!

First, I LOVE the intro ♥️♥️ It made me feel better. And second, I lost my dog 3 years ago 😭💔 BUT I made it my mission to go to animal shelters. I have hedgehogs. I am going to let them sleep on my lap while I work. Also, the part about their presence helping us stay focussed is so true, because when i watch music videos, I feel the presence of the artists and it actually helps me stay focussed! This is so amazing! ♥️

I never realised my dog was such an emotional support until he passed away. With in 2 years my anxiety had doubled, I couldnt replace him so I brought a kitten. The same, shes one of a kind every time I cry in bed shes straight there purring and cuddling me. Animals are the best emotional support x

This channel is amazing. I was label LD as a kid and they said that I compensated for a lot of my short comings by memories words instead of learning to sounds them out and stuff like that. My brother was diagnosed with adhd at a young age because she was more disruptive. I feel like maybe I have ad/hd too but it was not as noticable because I tried to follow the rules and I was quite. Everything distracted me in schools and I was given more time on assignmwnts. Now it is effecting my home life and work life. I over schedule and under plan. My house is always clean in one area but everything else is a mess. I try to organize but I always unorganize something else in the process. I listen but do not process and I forget everything I don't write down (which is not much). I have just found your videos and I am trying to make steps to change but my husband just says that i should have changed earlier and not protested so much when we have fought in the past and will not reinforce any progress. I am going to the doctor on Monday to see if I have it or not. How do you deal with a spouse that thinks you are "not trying" or "you should have tried earlier" when you are trying it is just hard when you don't know what to do to keep things the way they want them to be?

i originally got a service dog for worsening anxiety but little did i know he would help my adhd tremendously! every single day whether im at home or out and about hes always there to help and even though his tasks help a ton, him just being there and existing as a dog i need to care for, helps SO MUCH as well. i really recommend a service dog to those with adhd and anxiety (or depression along with those two) because mine has helped me live a happy independent life and i wouldnt have had that without him :)
