Just elaborating more about it, something on the lines of "How to get into the Vintage vibe". A lot of things can be overlooked by newbies or misinformed players, like replaced parts (pickups, tuners, etc, refin, body modifications, like filling the holes of a string thru body, etc. There are a lot of scammers out there that groom replacement bodies to look like the real thing and sell like the real thing. Sometimes we don't have the chance to remove the reck or check the pickup cavities to check authenticity. thanks guys.

Great advice here and I hadn’t really thought of piecing vintage parts together. You assemble the right stuff and it could be magical. Strats and teles are perfect for this idea, they are just parts guitars anyway and more easily put together by novices. Getting the bridge and the neck aligned right takes some skill. There are so many places to get good parts, you might be able to build a dream guitar in this day and age and still have a technically vintage guitar.

BEING A PERCUSSIONIST/ VOCALIST MY WHOLE LIFE, GUITAR WAS JUST ONE I NEED TO LEARN OUT OF NECESSITY. My very 1st brand new electric guitar was bought this year on my 40th birthday. I have at least a dozen guitars and only 3 are electric. My 1st new one is an Epiphone SG and its an amazing guitar. Only needed very little set up. My most valuable guitar is a 1962 Encore Violin holo body. Less than a handful were made spec'd like mine. 60s Yamaha acoustics are great sounding guitars. And my used Warlock was $1200 new and paid $200 for it.

Ive had a few melody makers from the 50s.... there is nothing special about 50s gibsons, just real les pauls and jazz boxes were special. IMO definitely nothing better than a 90s gibson or fender usa. They really don’t compare to guitars built in the last 20 years. Shits built way better now.

Well I got the 1931 L5- refin 16" well off the price of an original. It needed work- a lot of work as it turned out! I could have bought a very nice guitar for what I put into it-BUT-- it now plays and sounds like a dream, like it should. Someone will get a superb L5 someday when I'm gone that will last another 50+ years without needing anything. And that's what it's about if you care.
@jaredallen4393 жыл бұрын
@@ericw751 There is nothing wrong with putting a lot into restoring an old instrument. I do it quite often. Even more than the instrument is worth. I restored a Bruno mandolin that has "Xmas 1901" written on the label inside the sound hole. Bruno's were considered low end in their day and it was still a bargain find from an antique store. But because I also had the original case with the original owner's name on it (Fred Heller), I felt, as the current owner, it was my responsibility to get it back into playable condition. I easily could have purchased a decent, much newer mandolin from a much better brand for what I put into it, but ... I mean, I have a lovely, functioning 120 year old mandolin now that I can pass on to someone else. Who can say that? It's breathing new life into something. And I had to do it for poor old Fred. And don't get me started on the old Gibson tube amp I fixed up. That was a money pit. It's about having an appreciation for these instruments and their history and not wanting to see them wind up in disrepair on the shelf of an antique store, or worse.

Those 60s Japanese and European guitars can have a vibe, the high end ones come in under a grand ... I have a 50s Levin guitar, a cool hollow bodied bass from Japan from the 60s, and some of those Tiesco guitars... All brought very, very cheaply in junkshops and charity shops, and yes some are junk, but if you live in the UK and aren't a dentist, American vintage guitars are out of most people's pockets now. I just have a telecaster as my bread and butter guitar, these others are fun and the ONLY way I can afford a vintage instrument. So yeh, look for other less famous brands... I'd put that in your list.

They will continue to increase in price like all vintage Fenders. However, I don’t think they will ever be at the same prices as Strats or Teles/Esquires from the same year. Strats and Teles/Esquires (as well as Les Pauls and ES-335s) have been driven up in price because of the icons who played them and vintage “collectors” who are fans of those icons. Even though there are great and very influential artists who have played (or still play) Jaguars, Jazzmasters, Mustangs, and Gibson SGs , I think those guitars will always remain substantially more “affordable” on the vintage market. Of course that could change if a new guitarist comes onto the scene and does something revolutionary playing one of those instruments.

Back in the late 80s and early 90s everyone always said vintage was at least 25 years. However, we are to the point now that 1995 is now 25 years ago, and there is absolutely nothing special about the majority of guitars built in the early 90s. Taking things like that into consideration many vintage enthusiasts and dealers (including the highly regarded George Gruhn) have changed their opinions of what they consider “vintage”. Mr. Gruhn now says that each particular company has its own “Golden Age” (some of the older companies like Gibson have more than one) and that period is what should be considered “vintage”.

Ugh. When will the “vintage” fetishizing begin to wane?
@charlesbolton84713 жыл бұрын
The “vintage fetish” has been going strong for electric guitars since the early 70s (and for acoustic instruments since the 60s or earlier). It will only end when people stop caring about stringed instruments.
