I disable mine by using my finger and pushing the button.. This helps to get it warmed up to flick off other drivers who cut me off..It also helps to warm up my hand for all the Jeep waves I'll perform that day..

Several auto manufacturers use the "ASS" approach to squeak out a slight increase in fuel mileage and system I've seen automatically engages when the vehicle is started. It has to be turned off manually by the driver. As an engineering professional with decades of system safety experience, I question the validity of an "ASS." I'm personally not a fan of my vehicle potentially turning off in the middle of an intersection. The "crank the wheel" disabling feature, if used, goes contrary to most driving safety tenets - never sit in a turn lane with your wheels turned just in case you get rear-ended which would push your vehicle into oncoming traffic. The only proper way to disable the "ASS" is to turn it off manually after each start (build up those muscles in your index finger) or buy and install one of several devices specifically designed to automatically turn off the "ASS" immediately after restarting the vehicle. Disconnecting a sensor is also another reasonably viable approach, but it is likely to set a code in memory that the dealership will scan when the vehicle is serviced or taken in for totally unrelated warranty work. This video saved me a trip to the dealer. A couple of weeks ago I had my 2020 Gladiator in 30,000 mi service. As I was leaving the dealer’s lot the Service Start/Stop light came on the dash. I figured a technician had forgotten to reconnect something. I knew the dealer would fix it, But I didn’t want to waste the time to drive 45 min and then wait for them to get to it. Yesterday I got around to searching YT and found your video. When I saw how pull to pull the connector to disable the ESS I had a pretty good idea what had happened. Sure enough the Tech had not reconnected the connector. I watched the video again to see where to connect it under the battery cable and presto problem solved. Thanks.

Thanks for sharing this video. I disconnected the battery intelligence sensor and zip tied it to the main battery cable so I can keep track of it. I don't know which one will be more annoying, having that persistent exclamation point on my instrument cluster or having to press the button on every drive. We'll see.. Love my JL in all other respects, great first jeep.

I have a 2019 JL. I unplugged the #2 under the hood sensor and covered the warning light on the dash with a small piece of black electrical tape. No warning light and easily removable.

Just a word about the turned steering. If you are waiting for oncoming traffic and someone rear ends you it will launch you into oncoming traffic. I have seen this first hand before. If the steering was straight he would have just been rear ended and not rear ended along with t-boned. Tazer is the best bet.

I answered the survey on your first disable video and did not know I could pick 2 answers. I chose “I am going to disable it” based on the outcome of your video. I would have also voted that “I hate it”. In fact, I seriously hesitated going from a 2016 Wrangler to a 2018 ONLY because I did not want this “non negotiable feature”. It is on my wife’s Cherokee and I despised driving it for this reason.

Agree Oscar worthy performance. Excellent information on the “ASS”. Recently new owner of the Gladiator Mojave. Being in automation controls what sparked my interest was the brake pedal haveing a certain amount of downward tension leaves one wondering if there's not a plunger sensor on the break pedal that could either be unplugged or jumped across the plug that would allow a free no light on dash disable the “ASS” function? The next few days when I get a chance I’ll take a look on the break pedal on my Gladiator and add to this comment if there is a plunger sensor and whether it works or not?

I know I stumbled over this video three years after the fact, but one more way for automatic transmission Wranglers... when you are stopped shift the car into manual mode then shift it back. I stumbled over this over an old-tick I have for jiggling the shifter from my old days of driving a manual car. It's easier than figuring out the pressure on the pedal. BTW: I have the TazerJL. It's a cool device but I leave the Start/Stop on. It does save gas when doing on-road driving.

Looked at getting a new Jeep but that start/stop is a real turnoff. Will get the Tazer JL when that time comes. Can't believe Jeep didn't make a permanent kill option for that feature. We Americans don't like (useless or stupid) technology forced on us lol. Thanks for the video!

No it actually measures the position almost like your accelerator pedal. It not just an on off switch any more. There are 2 potentiometers on the brake switch if you were to disconnect one it may. I will choose the #2 hood switch. Make sure it is the correct one. Some Jeeps have the switches reversed.

The reason I searched for info on the S/S off is because my JL rarely shuts the engine down while driving (stopping). I need to do more testing but I may have stumbled onto the steering wheel position method by accident. My normal parking maneuver may be leaving the wheels cocked and disabling the auto kill. ?????

Tried the #2 hood switch but continually got "hood open" messages I had to clear. Originally, I would always just go from the ignition switch to the SS switch, but may try the battery sensor next. Looking for a fuse to the SS feature to pull.

Seems to me having to only press the button ONCE each time you start the vehicle is a LOT easier than to get into the 'habit' into than turning the wheel or finding the 'brake sweet-spot' EVERY time you come to a stop... both of which, in my opinion, are 'bad' habits, and as you show in your video, if you happen to 'forget' or be distracted (like so many who are constantly texting/on the phone) it shuts off the engine.

Another way to disable it is to put the Automatic Shift lever into Manual mode instead of D. The Start/Stop does not engage during those times.

If that's the case, you're still having to shift in & out of Manuel. Wouldn't it be easier to just hit the on/off SS dash button once per trip vs shifting from Drive to Manuel @ every stop. Makes zero sense to me

Man, loved the video. Assuming you did the leg work, thats amazing. The $329 price on that Tazer sucks, someone was smart to develop it and smarter to price it that way....Considering the high price, it does do a lot of cool stuff that make the JL more of a real jeep than a soccer mom SUV.

Dude...rather than trying to adjust the steering wheel or master the perfect brake position, you can just turn it off with the button every time you start your car. Much easier and only needs to be done once per drive We are looking for a way to permanently disable it without having warning lights or spending $300 for the Tazer. Apparently there are no reasonable options besides the sensor or Tazer right now.

I have two batteries--a main battery and an auxiliary start / stop battery. I disconnected the ESS plug from the auxiliary battery. Can I just remove the auxiliary battery or does it do more than just power the ESS feature? Thanks

I disabled mine via the battery. It will not auto start however. And the warning icon is on the cluster. Any ideas? I did not mind pressing the button to turn it off but when I realized I wasn't having to do that for a while I looked it up and found out it was trying "to charge" & I did not want it to kill my aux battery. My Jeep battery died and I believe the second battery (for start stop) died as well and I can’t start my Jeep. Even with a jump start . The dealership is struggling to get it running again!

I used the smart ESS module and have never had to deal with the button again. ESS should never be in any manual as it significantly increases risk of stall because the engine is groggy for about 10-15 seconds after restarting.

Get the turbo 4. The start/stop is unnoticeable due to the electric assist. You don't have any delay when taking your foot off the brake pedal.

Rather not own the 4 banger version. We passed on the Rubicon because they only offer it in 4 cylinder from the dealership

@@jameskrehemker9230 there is nothing wrong with the 4-cyl. It's just as powerful and is more economical. I was given a V6 loaner and couldn't stand it...its not as torquey in lower revs and have to rev the engine more than the 4-cyl to make power. The ESS sucked on the V-6 too. It shudders and is very intrusive. Videoonsight is right. The 4-cyl engine has the better ESS. It's super smooth. I don't hear or feel it working most of the time.

How can you beat the pcm? I have wranglerr 2018 manual 6 speed. Want to add remote start. Can't because no way to by pass the press the clutch requirements to start the jeep. Can't believe I am the only manual 6 speed driver that is looking for a remote start.. Any ideas what to do?

How hard is it to simply get in the habit of pressing the button on the dash as part of your starting sequence? Certainly easier than several of these methods and less expensive than a tazer. I've done it for so long now that it's muscle memory. Buckle up, start, press button. Go.

we've got the 4 cylinder turbo on our JL and just got it back from the dealer..."Jeep says that's normal". sounds like valvetrain noise to me but I ain't no expert. Sure is irritating though. If you get it up in RPM, it goes away but with 8 gears it's always in the RPM range where it ticks.

I first thought they were trying to make Jeeps into cars in 2007 when they started putting electric windows on them. Then I was sure of it when they started making Jeeps with four doors. Don't get me started on the whole lack of a V8 as standard engine. This auto start/stop thing is just further proof that FCA is increasingly pursuing a "lifestyle" market over its core off-roaders.

Two stage pedal stop switch or two switches? If two switches with the second switch only dedicated to the stop start system then it might can be disabled.

Drive a manual transmission stop start doesn't activate unless it's in neutral and you take your foot off the clutch

Was just at the dealership today and the vehicle inventory mgr was there and I asked him how to disable it and he said in the settings. Didn’t believe him so he showed me. Steering wheel arrows go to #6 and turn it off. He says it won’t come back on until the setting turns it back on...anyone else do this???

Turning the wheel while stopped to disable the ESS is a bad Idea. If you are waiting for traffic to clear while making left turn with wheels turned, if you get rear ended with your wheels turned you will be propelled directly into the oncoming traffic. Many fatalities occur this way. You should keep your wheels pointed straight ahead while waiting to turn left. If you are hit from behind, you will go straight forward instead which is a much better situation This is taught in drivers education prior to getting your license. I have also seen it happen twice in person.

Also if you have an automatic you can move the shifter over to manual mode which will also disable the stop start😉

8th way to disable a SS sensor....find a used JK and skip the JL version of Wrangler. This would sent the appropriate signal to Jeep-- auto SS is a really, really stupid idea.

OK, stupid idea or little 4 cylinders in ALL jeeps. This was done to meet mpg minimums, not as a forced pain...Don't like them either, but they're are easily turned off.

Remember, stop start isn't from the engineers, it is from the government. You're wrecking your engine if you use stop start. If you really hate the government, take off your cats too.

Turning the wheel to disable is very dangerous. If done and you get rear-ended then you’ll be catapulted into oncoming traffic. They teach you this as a 15 yo in driving school. Smh

Uh, Mr. Driver Ed, if someone rearends you at a stoplight, you're going into oncoming traffic one way or another...I was taught that at 12.

How so? Your wheels are straight you get flung straight. Straight isn’t where oncoming traffic comes from. Do you have vertigo or something lol

@@MrVPNG I have no idea what your issue is, but what I explained to you is as simple as it gets. If you are stopped at a 4-way light, and someone hits you in the rear, you're going into traffic. With wheels slightly turned, you may hit the vehicle next to you. I was not ragging on you, but the fact you went from 0-a..hole in 2 posts, I'm done with you.

TahoeJohnny who? Because according to Scotty Kilmer the Jeep brand is not the Jeep brand of old when Jeep was its own company. Now Jeep is owned by Fiat/Chrysler and that is a terrible mix if you want reliability and quality.
