Another good one Nick. I remember as an ax Fiat mechanic left hand Ritmo ES had stop start around 1982 really astonished me at the time they weren’t good starters in the first place😂 An economy model called the "ES" ("Energy Saving") was also available, it featured an early start-stop system. It featured some detail modifications to the aerodynamics, an optimised (higher compression ratio and different valve timing) version of the 1301 cc engine rated at 65 hp (48 kW), an engine shut off system (when idling) and electronic ignition.

Start stop system is the most hated thing in modern car. All time when I remember I try to turn off this system. Start/stop system makes a negative impact on your engine and it’s annoying for a driver. Savings from fuel are minimal but cost of repairs engine after few years can be huge.
@Conservator.
@Conservator. 2 ай бұрын
I beg to differ. Stop start systems are designed to do so and and there are no reports of repairs caused by it. If you know of any, I’d be very thankful if you could point me to them. Stop start systems usually have a starter-generator instead of separate starters motors and alternators. The savings are very real. My car counts the time the engine is turned off from the time it got last fuelled. It adds up to about 1.5 hours per fill tank! That’s much more than I’d ever imagined.
@LukaszOlszewski
@LukaszOlszewski 2 ай бұрын
@@Conservator. The engine is most destructive when starting. When driving in a crowded city with the existing Start-Stop system, the engine starts up to 20-30 times during the driving sequence. It will also be destructive to the turbocharger, battery or starter …

@@LukaszOlszewski An engine has the most wear when cold started because most of the oil will have dripped down. The stop/start system will only kick in when the engine is warm. The duration of the stops is too small for oil deprivation to occur. The engine is stopped just before ignition and it will hardly take any effort by the starter/generator to get the engine going again. Do you have reports of excessive wear and tear from stop/start systems?

@npoleary
@npoleary 27 күн бұрын
Thank you! So the climate control bit, if it’s really cold outside for example and you set 28°C and inside the car is really cold, the car might not do the start / stop until it’s got the temp near where you want it. It’ll prioritise getting you warm first. That and the starter battery will not perform as well in the winter so it’ll need charging up for longer too as you drive round. Same goes for demisting windows, if you put the de-mister on, it’ll prioritise that over anything else.

Every car I've had with stop start never works in the winter because of short return journeys to work and back. The management system has to meet several criteria before even thinking about doing its thing. Only a journey of about 20 miles sorts it out. My app says my car is partially charged at the moment but I know not to panic and will be fine in the morning.

As a reminder for folks who leave their cars sit for extended periods. Some MB models have a standby mode that will slow the battery(s) drain. Check your owner manual to see if your car supports this mode. This is really helpful if you don't have easy access to an outlet for a trickle charger to keep the battery topped up.

I've always found autos with stop/start are irritating to drive in traffic. You come to a stop, want to pull away almost immediately, but just then it cuts out, and you have to wait up to a second before it's ready to go. That can be tricky if you are in the middle of a busy junction. This is one of the reasons why I chose a manual for my own car - at least you can control it at a brief stop by keeping the clutch down until you're ready to go.

Starter motors these days and including mild hybrid systems are physically designed to do this. If this tech was on cars 20 years ago then yes Start/Stop would cause a lot of wear and tear. But the components used today are designed to actually do it. The average car years ago without this tech would have a starter motor rated for 50,000 engines starts before the starter motor might start to wear and / or need maintenance / replacing. Now they’re rated for in excess of 500,000 because they start / stop more.

Hi Nick. I have same car as you about 4 months old. This week my car kept sending me mails stating it was closing the car windows due to rain, every 20 secs or so. Went out and car completely dead. I put on my ctek5 for a whole day and nothing. Mercedes sent out RAC and they told me a Ctek will not charge a dead battery only keep it topped up. They connected theirs and away it went. They told me because I was retired and just did shopping trips the front battery could not cope. The front battery is only for the mbux system on the dash, everything else is from the rear battery which disconnects when front battery dies. Because of my lifestyle they told me to connect my Ctek when it’s in the garage. Did that and it’s ok now.

@npoleary
@npoleary 3 ай бұрын
Hey CertifiedMrTech, Thank you! Yes I know the stat you mean. Honestly best thing, stop looking at it 😅 let me explain…I promise it’ll make sense! Basically pretty much all cars have a trip computer and usually include a range indicator like on your car (same as mine). It’s really useful however on some occasions you can look down and it’ll say 200 miles and then others 400 miles. The most I’ve seen is 420 ish I think. As GoProflying mentioned it can be down to driving style but the most probable factor is where you’re driving. If you’re never getting above the speed of 40mph, you’ll never get more miles per tank of fuel. This is because most speeds under 40mph will encounter traffic in built up areas with lots of start / stops. If you go on a long trip somewhere, watch what happens when fuel up, that mileage will shoot up. But then when you return to doing lots of smaller trips round town, it’ll very quickly go back down again. It’s just the computer adjusting to where you’ve driven etc so although useful, not always accurate as it doesn’t know what trip you’re going to do next! Range computers will show you usually the last hundred or so miles of your driving etc Hope that makes sense, message me back if you’re still not sure 🙏

On my 2017 Subaru, my battery was 6 years old, once it stopped and then did a long beep with a warning I never seen before and I pressed the start button to start the car. @npoleary
@npoleary 3 ай бұрын
Ah yes! A good run would charge it up Well it depends of course how new / how old the car is. Starter batteries can last up to 5 years and even longer these days but luckily when cars are sold from main dealerships, they will usually check the battery health and replace if it’s not at optimum performance for peace of mind. Newer cars draw more power than ever before with all of the tech in them! 🤓

Start stop on my 981 not worked for about four years all of sudden recently decided to work just one time Battery AGM will be ten years old this year. I’m expecting it to give up soon but until then it doesn’t matter as the stop start doesn’t bother me. Waste of energy you have to have a special and larger capacity battery costs third more than a standard and also more wear on electrical components I do have the option to switch it off when using vehicle. If you are stationary a long time I switch all off anyway I cannot see how it saves pollution as when you restart engine it technically wastes fuel on startup on any engine.

Yup - low main battery will do it! Even with the car sitting on the driveway for a couple of days in a C Class is enough to lower the battery to below 75% which kills the Stop/Start. And don't expect it to re- charge sufficiently driving around town either! A 100 mile drive the other day did and so did the trickle charge that I often use to keep the battery conditioned.

Fuel economy would be greatly increased if the people who program stoplights coordinated them with the speed limit, so that you could drive from green to green to green to green to green The most fuel is used going from a standing start to whatever the speed limit is. One stoplight controller told me that one street in the city had been deliberately programmed so that you drove from red to red to red to red to red, because they wanted to discourage traffic on that street! Stop/start on cars is kind of like CA mandating how many loads of laundry you can do, while at the same time refusing to build new reservoirs to store excess rainwater that the state instead dumps into the ocean by the billions of gallons.

If you have not already covered this topic, I would like to know more about where the MBUX system is manufactured, where the chips are from, its reliability, and the costs associated with fixing it, should it malfunction. I'd also like to know what the most likely failure is, and the effects of that. Years ago, engines reliability was the big thing, Today it seems that infotainment system reliability is the thing to look for.

Replied to your other message 🤓 Hey davesmith5656, Yeah cars are these days! They have such sophisticated systems! 🤓 Really sorry I don’t know that, out all of the car manufacturers I review and produce content on I don’t think any of them explain that. I would imagine they do most of the work in house, but of course some components are probably sourced elsewhere. For MBUX specifically I ran a quick internet search and found this if that helps? www.luxoft.com/pr/luxoft-and-daimler-codevelop-technology-platform-that-powers-the-mbux-infotainment-system I know they also use NVIDIA for their graphic chipsets too which is pretty cool! In terms of costings, I wouldn’t know you’ll have to ask Mercedes. I do own one but it’s under warranty so if anything did happen it would be covered 👍🏼

@@npoleary---- Thanks. I've watched many videos and I've read many reviews, and all of them, if they bother to get beyond a showroom description, are about engines. The infotainment discussions are limited to features, with maybe only one or two passing mentions of reliability. You have to go to the comments to get any additional info (like how upset people are with them). The manuals for the different years are combined even though the features and functions are different, so even there it's not so easy to figure out what's in the car package. Computers on wheels. Do you happen to know, if you have an electronic shift, if the MBUX, goes down, can you get the car into neutral to have it loaded onto a tow truck? Quality and consistency of dealership service is also a huge issue. If the car is under warranty they probably do a good job and don't "leave something on the table". If it's out of warranty, which shop you take it to is a major decision. I've learned not to trust dealerships, and to choose shops carefully. E.g. take it for an oil change, and a month later the oil pump breaks, get that fixed, and a month later the alternator dies, get that fixed, and a month later a fuel pump malfunctions, etc.. They know what they're doing. I'm thinking about a car kit. No computers, and I know how to fix it myself. Keeping a 60 year old classic is a lot of work.
@npoleary

Well the thing is with reviews in general especially when creating content, most reviewers or content creators or KZfaqrs will only have a short time with a brand new model. I can vouch for this, the shortest amount of time I’ve had with a new car is an hour 🤯 not good! The longest is a week. Unless one was bought, comments couldn’t really be made about reliability long term because of the short time with the cars. I have however bought a Mercedes A 180 last year so I could talk about that but everything’s all good at the moment, and as it should be! It’s brand new and a premium German car. No manufacture is perfect though which is why last year I chose to diversify and cover more brands than I did before to help people make the right choice 👍🏼

@@npoleary ---- When I go to a car review video, I'm looking for (hoping for) more than a walk-around. I never really thought about doing uploads, or how to get permissions or whatever to review various cars, but I do appreciate that the industry is huge, and doing an in-depth on some new model would require a pretty extensive knowledge base to offer relevant comments and comparisons. It's the same sort of thing with surfing videos: they should explain the sea bed formations that produce the waves, and should show some footage of the waves from a distance - but do not. Mostly, you get very good to excellent shots of rides. There, it's very simple, compared to cars, and surfers probably know very well what's beneath them, but still, at best just passing mention of the sea bed under the waves. Your "tips and tricks" are useful! Vids talking about the beauty of grills and stitching and styling are not useful (I can see all that for myself). I do try to empathize with mechanics (technicians) - it's beyond me how they keep up, and it's the same with doctors, having to keep up with new journal articles and new procedures. There may be some summary database on car computer systems and reliability, and some data on whether or not there is partial failure or only comprehensive failure.

If you were manually turning the engine off with the key on a car that wasn’t designed for it then yes you would wear it out. But on cars that have start / stop tech they are physically designed for it. They have larger rated batteries, the starter motor itself is rated to have more cycles in it’s lifetime, the oil used in those particular engines are of different texture to enable it to flow round the engine further and the whole system in a car checks to make sure that it’s physically capable of starting again while in traffic. If you’ve stopped and started a few times in a row, it won’t do it because the battery might be a bit lower. So it’ll hold off from doing it to recharge.
