Today we're talking MINDSET CHANGE, how we define success, being brave enough to stand out, enjoying the journey, and loving others. I'm a flawed human who struggles with these things as much as anyone else, but these are 5 sources of inspiration (my favorite books, podcasts, thinkers and youtuber) who motivate me everyday. I've never been more excited to share a video - these are the things that are most important to me. I hope there's something in here to lift you up today.
❤️

Grandmother here. Just have to say that knowing ourselves, figuring out who we are is a long journey. And that’s ok. Life is full of twists and turns. Just be true to you. Be kind to everyone. You eventually get to a place of peace. Comfort in your own skin. Enjoy the process. And if we are lucky we have friends like Caroline to enjoy the ride. 💜😊

Your first point about our jobs and identity and how you feel about it really resonated with me. My fancy job was nothing more than a signal to others that I had made it in some way. They didn't know that I cried every day, I wasn't very good at it, and that my boss treated me horribly. It just mattered that I got to say I was off to the World Bank or setting up a meeting with so and so ambassador. When I left to go back to teaching I didn't want to tell anyone. I felt like I wasted my fancy NYU degree and that I was giving up. BUT, as these stories go, it was the best decision ever. You're such a shining light Caroline. You could do any job and it still wouldn't be the most impressive thing about you. Let your heart and mind believe that! Thanks for another great video.

@@Caroline_Winkler I grew up in the "those who can't, teach" era so it was really hard to wrap my brain around identifying as a teacher even though I loved it and it made me happy. I think what I've learned is that the joyful people don't care what their life looks like from the outside, they just carry on with what brings them joy. That's what I want! And I legit don't know where my degree is! I'm thankful for it but I also think I lost it :)

I worked years to finally get an executive position in the nonprofit world. Loved the mission, hated the job. Enjoyed the accolades my friends and family gave me for achieving my goal but not enough to stay. I left for another job but got laid off during pandemic. Returned to prior org where I was formerly COO and now I’m a consultant writing their grants, working remotely, and living life for me! Success is never a straight road and often ends up being something you never imagined. 🤗

@@JD4evr I think leaving a mission based job is extra hard. Like, I still care about the work my non profit did, I just couldn't work there anymore. I never get excited about an influencer or KZfaqr putting out a video but I can honestly say if you had 100s of videos I’d happily watch them all. I really felt for you when you mentioned the bit about getting respect for being a coder and not an artist. As a society we put too much pressure on job titles, for what? That’s not what makes us dignified and valuable, it’s our actions, and morality that do, in my opinion at least 🤷🏽‍♀️

I love that you are genuinely annoyed by things on your videos. Most youtubers are so over happy and over positive when they film themselves it makes the viewer think that something is wrong with him. I love that you are real, you do not smile all the time, you are pissed off by things of the day to day life, you are just a real person with positive and negative emotions and this is reassuring to watch. Have a good day!

Mr. Grant is right. Basic food, clothing and shelter are all we really NEED. That is success. The rest is just wants. We can measure our own level of success by the quality of the needs and wants we acquire. If you're unhappy with the quality, or the means to acquire, change is in order. Status - The judgemental opinion of others, based on whether you have more or less than they. No win scenario. Pay no dues to that club.

My favorite book relating to Buddhism is titled Living Beautifully with Uncertainty and Change by Pema Chödrön. I've struggled during times of change (even the most seemingly minor changes) all of my life. This book has really helped me to KEEP my shit together or at least GET my shit back together during those times of change. I'm still not a fan of change but I'm better able to handle it.

Working in tech garnering you more addictive compliments than a creative job like interior designer is BLOWING. MY. MIND. If I met someone at a party who was a coder I would probably politely pretend to be interested. But if you said you're an interior designer?!! Immediately impressed, a little jealous, insanely interested in your and your life. Would want to spend the rest of the evening talking to you. I guess it tracks back to a reflection of our own values... I am creative and value creativity more highly than anything else job-wise, not least because success in the arts is more difficult than many other fields. By success, I mean even holding down a steady income. So I suppose I go out into the world expecting others to be impressed by the same things I am. That said, I also want people to know I'm smart. My main frustration is that many people don't consider the arts to require intelligence, when in fact artists can be some of the cleverest people out there, and the most emotionally intelligent too.

Another podcast suggestion I feel like you would love would be “How to Fail with Elizabeth Day” ! She interviews famous, successful people…specifically about their failures. I just discovered you through your viral video and watched the vlog where you mentioned how this other video has performed really poorly... I had to come look at it. Girl, you did a great job. I could feel the passion you have for the content pieces you recommended and convinced me to go check them out. Funny enough one of my least watched videos is exactly the same topic as this one and I also didn't understand what I did wrong. No matter how much work and passion we put into our videos, sometimes they just don't perform well. Loved your reasoning around it in that vlog. I also recently made a video that got me to my first million views on a video and it's definitely not one of the best I have on the channel 🤷‍♀ Your home organization video instead is a masterwork! You'll improve so many daily lives with it, mine included. Sending some love from Udine, Italy.

All excellent info! The reading books comment though, I needed to hear. My brother reads several books a month, good for him, whatever. You know when someone has a mirror and they’re bouncing the light’s reflection into your eyes? The different ways your brain activates when you learn from reading vs hearing or seeing does have value. Working those muscles is important. But yes if you need to absorb most info a certain way, that's the best way for you. But still working on your weaknesses is important vs dismissing reading as a "never" for you.

It helps if you make notes, too (if your learning is academic, rather than something just for you). The different actions, together, help fix the new information into your working memory. Something similar can be done whilst listening to information, otherwise students would never learn anything in a lecture!

I have never subscribed to videos before and wasn't even sure as to what THAT involved, but.....I am subscribing to your video channel now. (Your "kitchen renovation episode" caught my attention in this last week---great job---and I've started watching other installments from there). I am 73, live by myself in a small apartment, and use my living space to also continue creative efforts as a lifelong painter. As it happens, I don't know anyone in your generation, so following your videos is especially and truly interesting to me. "Keep on keepin' on" with all your life activities and explorations. I like good design, and am intentional about the way I set up my apartment, although in my case interior design is tempered with workspace needs in my small space. However, you might like to know that you have recently motivated me to tweak my main room, and style my bookcase: books plus objects, vertical books plus stacks of horizontal books, etc. Anyway, more power to you, Caroline, in all your endeavors! I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos.

Hi Caroline, I enjoy listening to you and your take on life. You're a thoughtful kind person, somewhat like myself. I wish when I was a young girl, teen, 20 something we'd had as much info available about whats "normal". I always felt like somekind of weirdo or outlier. Most females were too afraid to speak their truth, and yep I am talking about being a teen in the 60s. Anyway keep doing what you're doing, you do it well. I ESPECIALLY LOVE your honesty around your fear and self doubt, please dont ever stop telling your truth. BTW, Im going to stick my neck out and go against the crowd. Not a fan of Paige Wassel, her surly, unamused unfriendly attitude is a turn off, Her design ideas aren't anything new.

I just made a salad and I'm very proud of it and I want to share how to make it. Also wanted to comment on this vid cus u said u were sad about the engagement on it in a vlog ✨ Makes 2 servings: Cut up 2 apples, one small carrot, half a cup of jarred lupini beans (they should be in a salty brine like pickles), quarter cup of sliced almonds. Let them rest in a bit of balsamic, herbs de provence, black pepper, pinch of salt (I used msg bc I love myself) for up to an hour. Split mixture into 2 servings bowls, add a couple handfuls of whatever salad mix you like (mine had spinach, arugula, lettuce, baby chard and baby kale), one handful of whatever microgreens you like. Top with shaved parmesan, croutons, crunchy fried onion and a drizzle of garlic infused olive oil. Serve with hot French press coffee or delicate tea. I've really been enjoying your channel, it makes me feel like a person. If anyone feels inspired by this to make a good salad respond I'd love to hear.

I just absolutely love your content, delivery, and how genuinely funny you are. I have recently retired and planning on a new journey. A passion since I was in my 20’s. I love antiques and having fun thrifting. As everyone says, “the thrill of the hunt”. I love design and everything that has to do with the home, organizing, unique items, quality furnishings and beautiful things. You speak to my heart and soul. I feel we have way too much in common as well. I was an actress in high school and college. I never took it to another level professionally like you did. I went the cautious real estate route and had a nice career, but so ready for my new adventure. You are giving me the aspiration and additional motivation I need. Thanks Caroline, I’ll be watching and enjoying everyday!

(Recently subscribed. I originally found you because I heard the term cottagecore, had no idea what that was so searched KZfaq for various videos about it to learn more about the esthetic). Found you. Decided your personality is my new best friend and spirit animal . Went thru your entire library and saved about 15 videos on my watch list which I've only gotten half thru so far. 😁 That being said, I've seen you mention about you career changes and the difficulties in going from actor to coder, ect and what is says or doesn't say about you... and I just totally related. At 50, I've had multiple jobs, and career changes. Including in my late 40s. And what I've learned is that creative types are often Renaissance Souls. I heard that term from a book about people like us that explore various interests and often will leap from one skill, craft, trade, career, ect to another. And can actually be quite good at several of them. And whether you realize it or not, those various skills you learn along the way inform or aide the next phase. Your acting and coding seem completely unrelated.... yet you merge aspects of each of those careers along with other jobs to perform the KZfaq career. It's fascinating the way it works. There are several terms for people like us. Renaissance Souls, Multipassionates, ect. Reading about it helps me see the benefits of being willing to pivot and follow new directions and add new skills to our lifetime toolbox. As far as telling people you are a coder.... you are not "a coder". You are an Actor, Coder, Designer, Content Creator.... all at once. It doesn't matter if you've chosen to not CURRENTLY act. You, due to the skills and networking you've previously established, are still an Actor, as well as a Coder, Designer, ect. Those skills and talents didn't go away. And you always have the right and option to return to it some day. Embrace that. We are more than the title of our current paychecks. We are all the combined skills and talents we've developed thru the years.

This is one of my favorites of your videos! It made me feel so comforted after feeling low/depressed bc it reminded me there's always an eventual upswing where things get easier and more joyful as I gain more skills and appreciation for living my life. I've been frustrated by the cyclical nature of this growth process lately, but this was something I needed to hear.

I grew up Zen Buddhist (Rinzai Zen to be exact) and watch your videos every weekend when I paint my nails :) it brings me a lot of joy to see these philosophies reaching you and supporting you. I hope you find what you're searching for, though to take a truly Zen stance on it would be to insist on the illusory nature of the idea of "self" at all :P If you are ever interested in doing some reading on the social/cultural history of Buddhism in the US, I would highly recommend Chenxing Han's "Be the Refuge."

Yet again LOVED this episode. YOU ARE MULTI DIMENSIONAL! And while that is an admirable trait, it may feel to you, as if you are faltering and always searching for who you really are. You are, first and foremost, an intellect FOR SURE. This is evident in how both articulate and witty you are, as well as in how interested and well versed you are on many topics (your raw honesty about how liking that your job portrays you as in intellect will resonate with many, but recognizing that this isn't necessary is the brave part). You are an actor, which comes through in how comfortable you are in front of the camera, part of what makes you so engaging to watch. You are a comedian, you're ability to improv and your delivery are PERFECT! You're a talented designer, again, well versed and read in addition to having intuitive style and the ability to share it with us. Finally you are a TALENTED you tuber. I never know what each episode will bring and just when I think "oh this is it, this is the content she should focus on", the next episode speaks to me just as loudly. Continue to be multi dimensional as we are all benefiting from all your talents and gifts. Don't worry about understanding your meaning here on earth or grasping your purpose, take your own advice and continue to appreciate your relationships in life, work hard at the things that speak to you and enjoy the journey because you're KILLIN IT. To answer your question, YES more episodes like this......favorite things to read, watch etc. But also more episode on how you helped people with design questions Then again I loved just hearing about how you hurt your knee and hanging with family. Just keep doing you.

Girl! This was deep for me. I rarely "read." I listen to books on tape in my car and I gain information, lots of information. But you are so right about reading being a vehicle to get information. Then, when you differentiated learning as a virtue vs. the act of reading...Amazing! Made my morning.

I love this video! Lots of new people to check out! I'm familiar with Paige's channel, but hearing you talk about her is really interesting. I feel like you were able to capture what makes her so unique and why I keep coming back to her channel long after I stopped watching other design channels. She isn't afraid to hurt your feelings. I love that. Some of what she likes is too far out for me, but her tips for creating balance and whatnot are applicable to every design style imo. I feel like I get a similar type of information from your channel. I might not buy the same decor, but your ideas and tips make me rethink the way I put things together and question the "rules" I've been hearing from other designers. I would love another list like this!
