Congratulations on realizing that you need to learn about parenting before bringing a child into this world, it realize too that you will never be perfect and you WILL make mistakes. Just be open to learning along the way. Much love and wish you well along the journey (though now, 1 year after you post, you may have had a chance to bring someone into the world already). Good luck either way!

I am having parenting guilt for yelling at my 16 year old yesterday. ☹ It's alot of self control for me to not yell at my kids. I grew up in a very hard and emotionally damaging family. I know this takes time and I know that I used the tools that I was given. I just feel I'm never gonna get there and it breaks my heart. 💔 #FeelingHelpLess Thanks for listening

See this as an opportunity to model apology and acceptance of mistakes. A 16 year old is old enough to understand that you are human and make mistakes. Own that and show them how to respond when they make mistakes.

Right?! Love them, found them when I was researching Positive Parenting. My son who is ADHD and on the spectrum is losing his therapist this year, I just might find out if my health care benefits would cover seeing him! Truly an amazing pair. They are also helping me because I sometimes self-defeat internally, and they are forcing me to realize that I'm not exactly sometimes helping the situation with my reactions to my kids' behavior.

In many previous videos you had mentioned calm voice calm body! When feeling enraged we need to take a few breaths first collect ourselves and continue! Also you said mean what you say and do what you say! What about in times that they try to manipulate you especially when your already being manipulated by the government? I'm a single dad and have found most of your videos very helpful! I think police officers could learn deescalation skills from you 2! In fact I think it should be required for for officers to be evaluated by experts like you 2! I think society would feel safer and might even be able to trust them again but other than, everyone who takes an oath to our government, I think should be evaluated by you guys! I think that's would be just as important as keeping our children happy and healthy! You might as well work your way up to the U.N.! Lol

Great video, but I especially appreciated your discussing honoring their choices and how you referenced that right after recognizing their autonomy. My oldest is almost 18 and I had to honor his choice to live with his dad in another state a couple of years ago. Boy was that hard, but I think I helped to honor him as a young man in that. My other son is 8. I learned a lot since my first son and implement those things, a lot of what you’ve mentioned, and I’ve noticed such a huge difference. I remind my 8 year old that God has something really special created just for him in this life and all he has to do is walk in truth. Most topics I ask him what he thinks about it and don’t give any opinion on his feelings but rather talk about proper responses to such feelings and then allow him to choose his own actions and consequences of each action. Good and bad. Thank you for also bringing up not trying to create mini-me’s. You guys are doing a great job!

Yesterday morning we were walking home from the market and our 3.5yo wanted to stop at the playground. I wanted to get home as my husband was about to leave for the week and I wanted to Say goodbye properly. I was sorry about her being so upset and wailing savagely, but I was convinced about going home. She recovered phantastically from that disappointment. She even looked happier after I stood my ground?! I observe that regularly, so surprising.

Vicki and Paul - thank you soooo much for that video which came just in time! Love everything what you have said and I second your every single word 👏. I have 3 daughters age 7, 5 and 2 months. Before my last daughter was born, I spent more time with my older girls, even if it was mainly homeschooling in recent months. Every evening we read the book before bed time and had kind of routine (still working on it). My baby was born and many things naturally had changed and I didn't have a clue how big thing it is for my daughters until last night... my 5 year old went to the toilet at 11am and instead of going back to her bed, she went quietly downstairs and closed the door, leaving the lights on in the toilet and in the corridor. When we discovered after few minutes she's gone from her bed, we went downstairs and saw her just sitting on the sofa... hubby said she looked a bit shocked when she saw him. No idea if it was a sleep walking (never had happened before) or just emotional escape but she admitted she feels loved less nowadays because I have less time to spend with her and her sister... this totally broke my heart because I do love her "no matter what and even if" but I know she is right about me having less time... I think I need to remodel and rethink my day and schedule to connect back more with my older ones... they love their little sister a lot but they need to still feel loved themselves too... maybe even more than before. Thank you soooo much once again for an eye opener Vicki and Paul. Love from UK 💓

Thank you for reply, we noticed the same and are trying to engage dad whenever possible. It helps indeed, we just need to change our routines and accept the fact that with little one on the board things sometimes go wild. I also talked to my middle daughter and she admitted she can't remember how and why she went out of her bed, went to the toilet and then downstairs... looks like she was sleepwalking. She is a lovely child but the one who never say "I love you" and wipes off the kisses. Recently I told her that she can use sign language to show me her feelings instead of speaking and I must say it works like a charm! Just sharing that with a hope that maybe it will help other parents with the similar "issue".

Miriam McGee, use that discontent you feel to create something better. I would have an honest talk with the kiddos, depending on their age, and tell them that you have yelled in the past and don't want to do that anymore. You can even watch some of the videos with them to explain what you will be doing. Ask for their support in the matter and who knows? I had one mom have great success with this approach.

I've heard in other parenting tips/advice that it's okay to be angry as a parent and to let your child know you're angry as long as you do it as calmly as you can and talk about your feelings and what the consequences are vs. yelling or losing your cool. Would you agree? I mean anger is a normal emotion and it should be okay to express that to our children when their behavior is making us angry or frustrated right?
@LiveOnPurposeTV
@LiveOnPurposeTV 3 жыл бұрын
Tara Siefring, anger is a secondary emotion, there is an emotion that preceded the anger. How we choose to behave determines if it goes to anger or stays at disappointment and how we handle ourselves. I don't think we have to show anger for our children to realize that there is a problem. We should deal with the frustration/expectation piece before we get to anger.

Do these also apply to single parents of toddlers? The boundaries of authority/discipline are blurry when the child doesnt listen. My two year old is hardly talking and does everything dangerous. My anxiety is through the roof. How do you stay calm in those moments where your tot is about to jump off a table and you need to stop it from happening?

changin_ thangs, when his safety is at stake, you do what it takes to keep him safe. You can give him consequences for getting himself in a situation he should not be in.

What do you do when your child doesn't realise how important their choices are right now and what serious trouble they can get into? Or they're just deciding it's not worth listening to? My 12 Yr old switches off if he doesn't want to hear or think of consequences.. I'm trying to stay calm but scared of losing him... Should I be brutally honest with him? 🌻🤔

Tracy Lowe, it is best at this stage for him to experience natural consequences. That way they learn.

I have an odd situation thata going on with my oldest, I call it odd but its scary, so long story short I have my oldest child up for adoption when I was 17, my child is trans so for tje respect I will say my child as to keep in gender neutral, but my oldest child came back into my life and I amd her father were given custody over my child, we found out later because said child told us about the abuse that went on at the hands of my family members that adopted my child, so my child has panic attacks, is afraid to be confident, and when asked to do something has a panic attack, we are currently doing grounding techniques, breathing, and working through the panic attacks, my child has done extremely well, but my child and I both have cptsd, which vibrate off of one another, so my question is, what is a good technique that can help my child gain more confidence in themselves and beleive in themselves more since my child doesnt feel secure enough in themselves?

Silver Seraph, I have never seen your child or your family. You can try some relaxation techniques. Do you have a therapist you are working with now that can help with some suggestions?

@@LiveOnPurposeTV yes her father and I competent and we are best friends so are me and his wife aswell, all three parents have her in counseling right now, he has been doing great and we are working with her through it all, but the panic attacks I'm just concerned about with her confidence, he also had a social anxiety that we are working through, it's not a cake walk but we are just trying to take it one day at a time

I try to talk calmly to my children but they literally start yelling over me before I can get my words out. They just don’t listen to me or my husband no matter what we do. We try ti discipline and we get nowhere. It’s very frustrating.

FacciaBella5, Do not respond to them when they are yelling. Tell them that you will listen to them when they are talking to you like you are talking to them. Do not give them a response other than to maybe be put in time out. If you won't engage with them when they yell, they won't yell. Believe me, they will push you at first to get a reaction, when they can't get one, they will settle down.

It seems the whole world has gone topsy turvy with so many adults having traumatized childhood. Which is causing so many emotional and physical diseases which do not have a cure. And there is no hope. The human raise is under some sort of curse. I used to believe that love made the world go around, but it is not so. 🙏

She is too defying, and I can't handle anything anymore. If I knew this years ago, perhaps things would be different. I will have to send her to other family. I have health problems. Because of my ex husband and family problems. I hope to find a counselor to help me find a solution. I can't be calm... Because I can't focus to work and then provide for the child, oh so that is the reason...
