i love how they make us believe hobie will be a love rival against miles but do a complete 180 and make him a homie

I think my favorite thing about Hobie is that he doesn't talk down to Miles. Gwen and Peter B. mean well, but they(mostly Gwen) try to let him down easy by sugarcoating things or omitting details. Miguel never even gives Miles a chance and tries to decide what right and wrong should be for him. By contrast, Hobie simply gives Miles the puzzle pieces and stands off to the side, keeping an eye on the situation but trsuting he'll put them together when the time is right.

Hobie has every reason and characteristic necessary to be a jerk and part of a love triangle, but he's not doing it because he doesn't conform to overused writing tropes.

A tiny detail that I noticed on a rewatch: Hobie has blue shoelaces, something punks and related subcultures only put on when they've killed a police officer. Hobie doesn't deny it when Miguel all but states every Spider-Person has lost someone. Suddenly his decision to be on Miles' side from the very beginning gets recontextualized: he either killed his universe's equivalent mentor figure, couldn't save him and feels as if he might as well have killed the man, or killed a police officer while doing Spider-Punk duties. Hobie Brown has depths upon depths and the fact that we don't get to know 99% of them makes him infinitely more intriguing. As the audience you want to know about his world, how his dynamic is with the people there, and, once you notice them, you want an explanation for those shoelaces. Hobie lives in my head rent free at all times.

I think a key aspect of what makes him so likeable that was possibly missed or glossed over in the video is how SUPPORTIVE he is of the other characters. He talks shit, and is assertive and confident in his beliefs, he encourages Miles to think for himself and consider all the angles but doesn't force it, and he doesn't actively put down or insult anyone (just kind of indirectly talking shit on Miguel haha), just questions their beliefs and their line of thinking. Just... what a cool mother fucker.

Hobie is honestly like a big brother to Miles in a lot of ways

I started hating hobie the second he appeared, yet when the movie ended I loved him. Great character and great movie

Dude I honestly didn’t know about the stupid love triangle rumor until after I saw the movie. I really appreciate how they portrayed his character as an actual punk and ally to Miles. Obviously knew how Miguel (+ Spider Society) viewed miles and finding out the reason why he (Miles)wanted to join the society(cult) he became a supporter and defender. Though he’s still a kid himself, he looks out for the younger spider teens as well, for instance he let Gwen find shelter within his dimension because she was homeless and in a vulnerable position; both becoming friends due to their love of music, style and powers. He’s very playful and hyper with Pav, since he’s(Pav) the youngest, both have shared distaste for the British and are very kind & caring in their own ways. Great video, I really enjoyed it and I hope you get more views for this! Ps: I really hate how there are people in the spider verse fandom who mischaracterize Hobie as mean and uncaring and it’s like ? 🤨? Did we watch the same movie & see the same character? He’s far from that to like, infinity.

He was warning Miles from the very start not to fully trust Spider Society, helped him with breaking Miguel's barrier, gave Gwen a place to stay after she was homeless, told Miles the only reason he was still in Spider Society was because he was looking out for his drummer (i.e. Gwen), and after everything went to shit he left her a watch :')) Though I will say I don't think Miles necessarily wants to be liked by all of Spider Society, I feel like what he told Hobie, he mainly wants a watch so he can see his friends.

I really liked how he was a subversion of the “romantic rival” trope. During all the foreshadowing, you expected Hobie to be overly affectionate with Gwen and unnecessarily mean to Miles. But he wasn’t! He treated Gwen like a normal friend and even went out of his way to help Miles. He was set up to be a character you’re meant to hate by playing on cliches, but once he’s revealed, he’s just really cool and entertaining!

I agree with others. I was like I hate this man coming between Miles and Gwen. And then he became my favourite character when he tried his best to help miles. I would die for him.

when it comes to intellect, every spider is equally as intelligent as the next if not more intelligent, so logically hobie would be able to accomplish the same dimension warping technology with more or less equipment compared to miguel... i wonder if miguel has realised this? i feel like maybe hobie is a little bit smarter than miguel, not needing a streamlined workshop with perfect technology. plus, spiderpunk in his anti-establishment glory, realised that miles (and mayday to an extent) disprove the idea of canon events or anomalies and are in part utilising this to destabilise miguel's strict spider society

For me I also feel like there may have been a little personal bias because I’m from London. My friends and I speak like Hobie and we have similar senses of humour. He feels much more like a friend I might have IRL than the other Spider-Man. I think that might also be why I liked Pavitr. I have many more Indian friends than I do American friends. And since a lot of the spider people were American. Maybe that’s why I gravitated towards the English and Indian spidermen. Since I live in England and have a lot of English and Indian friends.

Hobie is like my top 5 favourite characters in this movie. When I first heard of him coming into the movie. I was like they are going to do another love triangle which would’ve made the movie a bit flawed. But I’m glad they didn’t and instead made him a brother type character to Miles and a genuine friend to Gwen. I like how he told miles use ur palms not just ur fingers and how to use his venom blast when he meets him. which helped Miles later on escape. And how he gives him respect and hyping him up for saving inspector Singh and the little girl. Hobie calling Gwen (Gwendy) and Miles (Peter Pan) just makes me laugh because he knows they love each other. And I like how he tends to make Miles jealous on the missions she has been on with him and leaving stuff at his place. Just to see if he indeed likes her which he does ofc. Him designing his own watch for Gwen while having a conversation with miles in Nueva York and giving advice to him that “ The whole point of being Spider-Man is ur independence and being ur own boss” which is amazing because that’s what miles does at the end by saying “I’m going to do my own thing.” Honestly, his a brother/friend we all want having ur back and giving advice that will help u later on when u need it the most. But also him helping gwen by designing a watch to go visit miles because he knows how miles would feel about her at the end. Just shows how much he cares about their relationship and how much he wants her to patch things up with miles. I’m done. What an amazing character with so much depth and layers.

Hobie not being a love interest for Gwen was the right move for sure. He also guided both her and Miles, telling her that she may not have told miles enough about his place in all of this. He never shamed or scolded her outright but he was always looking out for Miles too.

I think he has a specific appeal to people on the left. Even if we aren’t exactly the *same* type of progressive we all know people like him, youthful and firey in the fight against authority. I found it kind of endearing.

I also love that Hobie doesn't just embody the aesthetics of punk, like we often see, but also the ideals. He's got the substance as well as the style, and we see him back that up with his actions, and it's shown as being real and helpful, rather than silly and childish

I think a lot of these can be summed up more simply: The archetype foundation you started with, in every instance, is contradicted in the character's introduction, and often throughout their story. Han Solo may be a thief with a heart of gold, but the contradiction is built into that archetype. We don't know whether Han is going to transcend his self-interest until the very end of the film Star Wars (sorry, I'm too old to call it "A New Hope"). I mean, we do, because it's obviously telegraphed, but the point of the story is to watch it play out, not to keep the audience guessing. His act 3 turn is implied by his introduction as a disinterested mercenary. We know better than to take characters at their word. It's always actions that tell the real story. Characters like Obi-Wan and Merlin, similarly, are typically introduced as strange hermits, even fools. Yoda is a perfect example, his comical appearance and behavior hiding the deep well of powerful wisdom within. Hobie, similarly, is introduced as the Spider-Man who doesn't follow rules or care about responsibility. In fact, he seems not to care about anyone or anything beyond looking cool and listing everything he hates. Initially, he seems like he's in it for the LOLs. And when he bails on the whole mess when Miles and Miguel end up at odds, this impression is confirmed. He seems too "cool" to take sides. As a guy who grew up in northern California in the 80s, I knew way too many "punks" like this. I still do. But as the story plays out, he contradicts that initial impression by proving himself not a nihilist, but a rebel, secretly working against Miguel's oppressive system. Hobie's "punk" attitude isn't rebelling against society, it's rebelling against mindless rule-following. And as with Han Solo, we can see this coming a mile away, because we know not to take characters at face value. When Hobie bails, we can guess we haven't seen the last of him. And when we're proven right, that creates a strong bond with the character. I think this is the key to making a character like Hobie lovable. Though his true nature is telegraphed from the beginning, just the act of seeing through the initial presentation involves the audience in the storytelling, rather than forcing us to sit back and watch passively, without drawing our own conclusions. This simple contradiction is the source of the character's layers. We're delighted to see Hobie bond with Mayday. It doesn't really surprise us anymore than his ultimate betrayal of Miguel surprises us. The contradiction is the obvious subtext to the text of his seeming indifference. And that same dynamic is the source of his humor. It's funny to see mister too-cool-for-school bond with a baby. But it deepens his character, because his connection to her as a born rebel is both hilarious and a meaningful observation about the nature of childhood. We're not born rule-followers. It comes from our desire to explore and question authority being stripped out of us. It's funny and poignant. So I think a simple formula for creating a lovable character is introducing that contradiction, and finding the character's unity within it. Your character is a bad-ass intergalactic gunslinging bounty-hunter? Give him a baby to look after, and profound bond with it. A midwestern creampuff football coach? Reveal his positivity as an unbreakable force of will, winning over a team of surly, angry, stubborn british footballers. A pretty, lonely teenage orphan girl? Make her the most deadly chess player in the world. The contradiction between what they seem and what they are sets up everything you need to win over audiences.

Hobie’s first appearance I got scared that they would make him so one dimensional just cause of how he introduced himself. So glad I was proven wrong lol.

Excellent writing advice! Hobie was my 'type'- the over-smart sarcastic observer type.

I feel like another thing that immediately makes the audience perceive Hobie as 'cool' is that he is introduced as being immediately able to do something that Miles can't/struggles to. Hobie enters while Miles is struggling to break the laser-wall with his electric powers, and does it without breaking a sweat. This also works because the audience is given the impression that Hobie is better than Miles because he is more experienced, rather than just by virtue of being himself (characters being skilled by virtue of being themselves and no other reason is something that is common in modern media and drives people crazy). Hobie being more competent than Miles is also set up by his earlier mentions, as him being known by Gwen and Pav establishes him as a member of the Spider Society, and obviously someone competent enough to be part of the society. Which at this point in the movie, explicitly means he must be better than - and thus cooler than - Miles.

I wished more people talked about how the original Hobie started off as a total loser with a lot of talent who beats himself up too much, and the alternate version of himself is a person who has a strong sense of who he is and doesn’t feel sorry for himself.

If I was going to suggest a break down for making a character cool I'd say, find a style repertoire (clothing, language, behaviour etc) that has values matched by your audience, exaggerate some parts of its aesthetics, and don't let the audience see the work that goes in to preparing it. So with Hobie, he's presented using signifers pulled from a punk aesthetic, which has a history as an anti-authority, activist and art movement, and co-opts signifiers of military and police violence to satirise them (as well as combining them with music and behaviour linked to those values). The audience the film is aiming for is already expected to be somewhat anti-authority (because the point of the movie is Miles standing up against a major one, so any authoritarian lens is going to struggle to engage with the plot) so you make sure the elements of the character design match that value, so it'll be positively received by the audience. Then to make it cooler, you just don't show the audience the character having to try. When we follow Miles or Gwen, we see them struggle and compose their identities (the shoulder touch from the first movie being a good example). This lets us see their awkward uncool elements, and undermines their cooler ones. For Hobie we just exclude that, making his awesome parts, appear as natural and simple and making his aspirational (he embodies a value the audience wants and he doesn't seem to have to try to get it, thus cool). A similar trick works with beauty in films. Directors often hide the effort that characters that are supposed to be seen as attractive put in to things like fashion, make up, self-presentation, while when we want a character to seem relateable or awkward, we simply show that hard work. The more work you show, the less natural the performance seems and the more opportunity a character has to trip over themselves or show a crack in their unified presentation.

Oh i loved hobie, because i remember reading his comics few years ago and they were so CHAOTIC

I instantly fell for how cool he was! He talks like me except I say those things ironically. That instantly made me relate to him.

Another technique I’d highlight to specifically make one character cooler than another is by giving the cooler character a certain “idealistic” quality, not as in perfectly exemplifying that quality necessarily. Just a more favourable quality than the opposite. Such as how Hobie doesn’t care what people think about him whereas Miles is quite concerned about that. Because not caring about what people think about you is something everyone is told but isn’t necessarily good at Hobie being good at this in contrast to Miles makes him cooler.

I love how Hobie uses the audience's familiarity with bad punk characters to turn the story on our heads. We see Hobie, he's making jokes about everything being capitalism, not being a team player, not being consistent, etc. and we think we know the stereotypical straw punk from all media. And then they show his support of Miles, encouraging him to stand on his own feet and go against the grain, and his intelligence in weaponising people's perceptions of him in-universe to get away with stealing technology to make his own bands! Hobie doesn't even have that much screentime but he's subversive and honestly one of the most pure-hearted characters in this film. Kindness is core to punk and finally we see it on-screen

I loved how Hobie was written, how he was drawn/animated, and the way he interacted with the other characters. (Specifically Miles.) He helped Miles the whole time, gave him advice, but didn't treat him like a kid like the others did. He let Miles make his own decisions while helping along the way. (Giving the palm advice, recommending to make his own watch, helping him out of the cage, and leaving/quitting as soon as the chase began in order to make a watch.) Bonus for the accurate desc of 'Punk.' Not making him a jerk, or making him against rules for no reason. Bonus bonus for his amazing comedy!!

I'm now realising I somehow missed so much during my viewing of the movie, even just for Hobes alone - I missed all the foreshadowing and mentioning of Hobe before his reveal - I missed his name, although I hear they later made a revision to the film where comic text of "Hobes?" appears on screen when Miles says that - I completely missed the fact Miles was jealous of him, I interpretted it as confusion in places and admiration - Didn't hear any of the "I don't like Comedy" joke - I missed 90% of what he said because of that accent and the film's audio mixing XD I was paying attention during the film, but I guess I was distracted with everything else going on.

In the romatic silly swing in Miles' dimension with Gwen, she literally says: "Hobie? oh my gosh you would love him" to Miles when she mentioned about him. You coule tell for a moment he felt a bit insecure, a dude letting his crush crash in his own dimension and hanging out more than Him, who sounds so much cooler, and he didn't even know what reason it was for too. He meets Hobie, gets the jealousy a bit but you can tell Miles understands why everyone thinks hes cool. An interestinc character with this guard of q cool and independent self image.

At first I thought Hobbie was all talk no action, that he would point out criticisms but not actually do anything about it. So I was impressed to learn that he believes his punk philosophy to his core and will truly break any hierarchy no matter how potentially dangerous. But what makes him great is that his anarchy is calculated to help ppl. He’s in Nuevo York to be there for Gwen and he’s the first one to be on Miles’ side. There’s few things more satisfying then a kind character who sticks to his principles.

About making someone “cool”, I think someone another perceived as ‘cool’ demonstrates the traits and personality others wish they had. For Hobie, he’s confident, smart, he’s ‘woke’, good-hearted, and sure of himself. He does whatever he wants without worrying about what people think of him. Those are traits that I believe most people think of when they think about self-improvement.

i don't agree to the rivalry with miles thing, i rather saw that miles is impressed by hobie, consider miles as an outcast, he was told he wasn't "supposed" to be spiderman and he has powers other spiderfolk do not, the thing of him is to be his own person, his own spiderman in spite of the expectations put on him. None of those he frequented had bioelectric powers. And then out of nowhere entered Hobie outright executing the thing Miles did and thought only *he* could do, then telling Miles the trick to those powers, "use your full hand, not just the fingertips". The payoff later when Miles is captured by Miguel and Miles turns to Hobie, he reminds him of the trick and it allows him to escape. In those scenes, and the movie in general, Miles looked up to Hobie, and he acts i think like a sort of mentor*, helping Miles achieve his best self. I say mentor with an asterisk because he doesn't truly teach him, but he pushes him to do what hes best at and fight for his ideals. he's inspiring him but not truly teaching him. I also think the relation between Gwen and Hobie isn't meant to be regarded as love, they're just friends, but the way Gwen said it made it sound like that indirectly, its mega clear she has a crush on Miles and not Hobie.

What I really like is that he is forshadowed as a rival for Miles, but when the entire spider society turned their back on him (even his old friends), Hobie is the one who helps him by telling him how to escape.

From day one, I knew that rumor floating around that Hobie was gonna get between Miles and Gwen was pure, 100%, unadulterated bullshit. He's not some man-slut who wants to stir up jealousy, cause unneeded drama, and try to steal Miles's girl. He's HOMIE BROWN. Lovable punks are among my top three favorite character archetypes. It's truly amazing that Hobie only has about seven minutes of screen time, yet he does so much and has unforgettable lines. So because of that, he doesn't feel underutilized.

I also really like how Hobie clearly has a dark past. Canonically his dimension is a dystopian type and is super dangerous. And when Miles finds out that other spidermen have lost people too, and it’s a cannon event, he looks at Hobie and we can see for only a split second, he seems spaced out before realizing that people are looking at him. Just makes his character better in my opinion 🤷‍♀️

What i love is that hes like uncle Aaron if he because spider man instead of the prowler, they both are named after the prowlers civilian identity, both tech geniuses, both extremely creative with art and finally they both support miles.

I didn’t think I would like Hobie as much as I did, I thought his whole punk personality would get old really fast but he was written so well he became probably my favorite character in the movie

I also think another thing to add is that he wasn't given an unjust amount of power from the start. A lot of times bad writers try to make a character important by almost forcing them to have an important role the story, but hobie's inclusion in the group felt pretty natural but naturally ramped up as he ended up playing an important role using the personality traits we've seen AFTER he was introduced.

I think this entire film, much like Into the Spider-Verse, is an absolute masterpiece. Every single character is so exceptionally well written and serves a purpose. Hobie Brown was arguably one of the spotlights because of how he stuck out like a sore thumb, with his rebelious, anarchistic attitude that is reflect in every single aspect of him, down to his design and everchanging animation. Truly the team behind this film went above and beyond with the imagery. It easily became my favorite Spiderman film _ever._ I can't wait for the third film.

Another thing that makes him likeable is that because he is honest to Miles and helps him use his powers better, he is capitalizing off of Miles likeability and our natural tendency to root for the hero of the story. Miles is a great protagonist anyway, and seeing characters talk down to him, lie to him, or try to stop him from doing what he sees is right makes them less likeable to the audience. This causes Hobie's support and honesty to stand out way more.

Slight critique, it's perfectly acceptable to use cam footage when nothing else is available (and most importantly it's free), but when you're attempting to show off quotes or clips of characters saying things you should really add subtitles to the screen, for people who don't have the best ears it's really difficult to understand what's being said Again, just for quotes and clips. Your voice is very clear. And overall the video is great, easy to follow along to, which is why not being able to tell precisely what's going on in the clips stand out that much more
