Surprised you didn’t mention the part where Miles questions why everything has to happen like that. Jessica says “Hobie you’re not helping”, to which he replies “Good.” I agree that I think he will be a hero, but he needed Miles to question everything and stand up to Miguel to make others stand up to him too.

Also when he says "Its a metaphor for capitalism", its nod to the fact that comics never end/have some kind of crisis every other week because companies need money and the more stories they sell, the more money they make

yeah, on the metanarrative level, the whole idea of challenging the validity of the Canon is a stand-in for trying to break free of popular culture's cycle of repackaging and selling the same thing over and over again at the expense of nurturing creativity and exploring new ideas and stories. Like, sure, someone observing the world through the lens of the anarcho-punk ethos would see an all-devouring black hole as a representation of the very power structure they wage war against, but the writers clearly had something to say about corporate greed and those who push back against it, too.

OKAY WAIT. since we're talking about hobie's slang, i need input on his use of "Peter Pan" and "Gwendy" to address gwen and miles. theres a lot of people on the internet talking about hobie and gwen having a possible love interest, but that doesnt make any sense since hobie has basically rooted for miles since before he even met him, and even so, he treats miles like a younger brother. (hence, "younger from 1610") im also just curious if anyone else noticed the way he seems to be on board with gwen and miles being together because its almost like he uses Peter Pan and WENDY's love interest (like the fairy tale) as a reference to 'love from another world' (i.e. neverland?). some of my friends said "peter pan" could just be like hobie's way of saying miles is a "lost boy" which makes sense, but hobie always has a deeper meaning, right ?

The thing is that Cockney rhyming slang is anachronistic so is more of a cultural flex. The examples of "apple and pears" or "Arthur J" have gone the way of the dinosaurs as they're not useful. "Scooby" is still in usage as it allows voice inflexion to vary its context. Daniel Kaluuya is using "scooby" defensively which is him protesting too much. But mostly my British ear got a disillusioned tone from Hobie rather than defiance (which is the punk spirit). We're yet to see the full Spider-Punk experience.
@mentlinc
@mentlinc 9 ай бұрын
I thought the Scooby Doo line was him saying he won't pull the mask off the true villians face for Miles (Miguel?) like they did at the end of SD episodes. He said that's what they'd want him to do as in snitch so they could determine his true loyalty which would put him in the middle more than he should properly be. I thought he was saying that Miles has to figure it out himself to take responsibility over his own situation and free himself not be freed by someone else.

You didn't mention how Hobie literally asked miles why he wanted a spider society watch, and then tells him to make his own. Which he does himself later in the movie

I know I had to pause and rewind to read the insets for the meanings and just to catch what Hobie said! Thanks for this one.

If a Cockney ever calls you Berk, be insulted. Be very insulted. It’s derived from Berkeley Hunt.

of all of my favorite spider characters, hobie b and, regardless of the movie protrayal, miguel are at the top and their portrayals in spiderverse was impressively outstanding! learning the way they used the varying framerates for hobie makes it 1000% better!

ok i might be overthinking it, but its odd that both Hobby and Dr. Strange refer to Scooby Doo in big multiversal Spiderman movies that also both feature Tobey and Andrew. i may be reading too far into it, but in the Spiderverse movies, there dont just seem to be coincidences

Their is a rap duo called Pete & Bas that is from that area that rap with Cockney slang. They are two older dudes in like their 70's and are probably the best rap duo out right now.
