I just picked up a hybrid on a whim, and it’s now my favorite club in the bag. Smooth, easy swings and it pokes one out there just under 250. Exactly what I needed- a club that can find the fairway every time with almost 0 effort. Great vid guys!

I'm the guy the driving iron is meant for. 1- for some reason I've always struck irons well and struggle with fairway woods. 2- it's always windy in Nebraska and controlling ball flight and keeping the ball low is at a premium. 3- I like versatility, shaping shots, hitting stingers, could never get that from a hybrid. Been playing a Srixon 3 Utility for about a year now and loving it. Love the comparison videos. When I was young I never realized that my 3-iron and 5-wood were basically going the same yardage in different ways. I was wasting valuable real estate in my bag! 🤦🏼‍♂️

I did this 2 weeks ago. Replaced the top of my bag with G425Max D,3,5,7,&9 with i500 6-P Shot 76 on Monday. Best round in 6 years. Easy swing=high, straight ball flight with a hop and stop. Consistent 15 yard gaps. (5 days practice followed by 5 more days playing in a row certainly helped) 🤣 During my fitting the ball flight was so consistent and good I really said, “So this is what Matty boy feels like at TGX. Except this is his mid iron distances.”

This is the correct answer, surprised Ian didn't mention it. 5W all day on a softer parkland course, good off the tee for dog legs where driver is too long, better stopping power on the greens, height to get over trees etc. 3i/Driving iron on a firm links course where the wind is up, you want that lower ball flight that will run on the fairway, and you can run it up to the greens. 5W just has far too high a ball flight with the wind on this sort of course.

I think it depends on the course. For off the tee, if you’re on a tight, tree-lined course, sometimes it’s better to use a driving iron to hit a low bullet with a flat face instead of a rounded faced hybrid or wood. However, if the course is wet, more open, or you’re not using this club off the tee as much as approach shots, then go for a hybrid or fairway wood.

I’ve recently replaced my 4i with a hybrid and I couldn’t be happier. No only do I hit way more consistent and accurate shots but I’m even way more confident playing the club out of suboptimal lies. I personally think that’s where a hybrid shines the most over a driving iron and fairway wood. I’m now replacing my 5w with another hybrid. Depending on courses I’ll switch between them but I currently have more self confidence with hybrids for sure. Definitely should have considered this setup sooner.

Lefty here, currently bagging the Cobra one-length and it's been a game changer for me. I carry the 4H (220 yd max) and 3H (240 yd max) in one-length. I carry a PING G425 2H (265 yd max) because I've had a better experience with hybrids vs. fairway woods. I mainly use my PING 2H off the tee, but I like the versatility & confidence I have in it from the fairway if I'm outside the yardage of my Cobra hybrids on a Par 5.

This is a big one in my brain on the course. I find I am lacking a "confidence club" into the wind off the tee. Hybrid is usually consistent but would prefer a lower flight to push the ball through the wind.

3W, 5W, DI for me. When my old set finally got beaten up enough to leave behind, my replacement iron set didn't come with a 3i, so buying a driving/utility iron was a no-brainer. 5W is easier to get airborne and a bit longer, but indeed for lower shots in heavy wind, long punch shots, and some drives into tight fairways the DI is just the ticket.

@cc-rg7dz
@cc-rg7dz 3 жыл бұрын
@@Momo_8k It's just a technique issue. People in general do not understand how to play hybrids/fairway woods/driving irons off the deck. Any golf club with a wider sole that doesn't behave like a traditional iron should be played from the fairway wood position, which is just slightly more forward than irons and usually is played with a sweep. There's nothing wrong with these clubs, each club has its own strengths and weaknesses that fits into a particular shot.

This video is exactly where I’m at right now, 3 handicap so I’m not as good as Matt but a pretty decent golfer and I’m exactly where he is with this spot in the bag. Sim2 udi Ventus black 95x, sim2 rescue GD DI 85x and ping g425 7wood Accra tz5 (I think) 85x all have been rotating in and out of my bag. I’ve pretty much illuminated the driving iron due to same window as you discussed and it’s a back and forth between the 3 hybrid and 7wood. Numbers are very similar to Matt 4 iron carry is 232 on last gapping session and 3 hybrid is 245 on the dot with the loft weakened a hair. Recently got the 7wood so I haven’t had it gapped yet but just from my eye it’s around the same 245 mark. 7wood is definitely easy to hit and can be a little hindering when the wind picks up Vs the hybrid but for me is a touch easier than the hybrid. I’ll be very curious to see y’all’s next video with this when you build the 5wood to a more 7wood specked club for Matt. In reality depending on course you play if you don’t have but maybe 1 or 2 shots requiring that 270ish 3 wood shot it’s almost beneficial to pull 3 wood out of the bag and have the hybrid and 5 wood in instead. That’s another battle I’m facing with my set up lol. Now you have two good windows at similar yardages with the choice of flying the 5 wood 10 yards further if needed but also the super high fade with the 5 wood if needed. Ahhh the choices! Cheers guys keep up the good content 🤙🏻

@jubuttib
@jubuttib 3 жыл бұрын
@@paqman78 Aye, it's not just hype, but it is definitely something you need to think about. With so many bags featuring a gap wedge these days there isn't really much space left, and the driving iron and 7 wood both have very definite good and bad sides. Though I think personally a 7w is maybe more competition to a 4 iron for me than it would to a driving iron. Thankfully my set is old school enough that the spacing between 9, PW and SW is good, so no need for a gap wedge, I can have both a 5 wood and a driving iron.

Same flight but (as Matty said no video) “I don’t have to work as hard for it”. 4 iron is now out the bag and another wedge is in. Would love to do the same with the 2 iron in my bag. So come on fellas, Get Matty fit into a 5 wood with a shorter shaft… Fill that 7 wood space us lefties can’t easily buy off the shelf.

I started with a driving iron and 5 wood (pxg proto) play a 22 hybrid instead of a 4 iron. Realized the driving iron was no value - So added a 3 wood (srixon ) Drive 270 on average - 3 wood gives me 240-250 gapping , 5 wood 220-330, hybrid 200-210. Hit my 5 irons about 190. It’s so much simpler now

@jubuttib 3 жыл бұрын
Thankfully I'm in a happy position: My iron set is old school enough that a gap wedge doesn't have a place in it (the spacing between 9, PW and SW doesn't really have gaps, and I can throw a lobber at the end quite freely), but it doesn't have a 3 iron either, so I can put in a driving iron for the 3 iron slot, and still have room to put in a 5 wood. And as a plus, I really don't like hybrids, so that doesn't enter the discussion. I love both the driving iron and the 5 wood to bits. They might not be terribly different with the distance (tho the 5W is longer), but they have very different flights, and I have plenty of situations where I one is a better choice than the other, so both have a place.

Driving Irons/Long Irons are great when you hit them well, the problem is inconsistency, when off they will be way way off. I stay away from them! Hybrids are a better option for most golfers, as well as the 5 Wood. As a right handed golfer I do like the option of a 6 or 7 Wood, which you don’t have as a Lefty. Good and bad days with the 5i, but it’s almost always too low and runny to play full swing into a green. nice vid guys! I'm going till 5-iron and then play 4 and 3 hybrids, 22° and 19° with good 15-meters gap between the 5, 4 and 3. My driver goes somewhat further, so I might have a space for a 5 or 3 wood left.

I got a left handed ping G410 7 wood, xflex evenflow shaft. Absolutely love it. Occasionally swap it out for a srixon z85 2 iron if it's windy, but great having the option. 5 wood for me got a bit too close to the 3

Have replaced the top end of my bag recently. Epic flash sub zero 5 wood slotted in where the 3 hybrid was. Gives me more flexibility with longer shots. Two or three clubs in one in my opinion. Especially now I’m in my fifties, don’t need to stand on the long hybrid.

A pity, Titleist doesn’t offer TSi2 7 wood left handed. I replaced my 917 F2 5 wood this season with a TSi2 7 wood, fitted with a black GD Tour AD Di 7X shaft, tipped 1”, cut to 41,5” in playing length, S-Weight: D2+, sure fit setting: C2 approx 20,25 dgr loft. It’s become a clear favourite in my bag, Stock: 225 yards carry, can easily add or sub +/- 5 yards. Great out of the rough as well and down hill lies doesn’t make much of a difference, the ball is always getting up. Have never ever had a more forgiving wood in my bag. It will stay in my bag for a long time..... :-)

There are so many options going with woods. Find a head that you like, weaken it by a few degrees, but not make it a hook-monster, put in a short, stout shaft and you'll have a perfect 6-wood really.

You are bringing the gap back to hit after the 4 iron. Yet Matt bombs a 3w and the gap between the 3w and 5w will be massive. And you are taking the stinger into the wind out of the bag. I have been working on the same thing and here is what I am doing that works for me. My 4 is a rescue. I added a 3 rescue and pulled the A wedge. Have been testing a 5 wood to possibly replace the 3 rescue. I don't have the power Matt has so I can set it "higher". So it plays like a 6w. My reasoning is it is much easier for me to take off a little on the P wedge to get the A wedge yardage than it is to take off a little on the 5w. Same with getting after a 56 to get 5 or 7 more yards. Short clubs are much easier to do this with. I find my self needing to get better gapping on the top as I am not bombing 325 to 340 off the tee and will need these long clubs a lot more often than a player like Matt who hits a 3 wood as far as I hit my Driver on a good poke. A 7w for Matt will go to high. I would add the 3 hybrid and the 5w and pull the A. Another option. If I could hit a 3w 315 off a tee, I would leave my Driver at home and put the A wedge back in the bag.

Question. I noticed you didn't use a short tee on these tests. (or at least I didn't notice) do you not tee up your driving irons/ woods off the tee box? Or is this test supposed to simulate your 2nd shots into a long par 5?

you really shouldn't be teeing these clubs much off the turf, so really all it would do is add some distance to the final tally

This is a good set up / condition topic.. I love a driving iron but only when its hot and windy.. for 80-90% of my rounds you couldn't pry the 5w out of my bag w dynamite.. bomb a shorter par 5 from almost any lie, toe it in for shots out of thin rough, and I have about a 99% expectation of a quality strike

I prefer the fairway woods because of the ball flight. I'm not a long hitter so my 5-wood covers that distance between 200 and 220, depending on how aggressive I go at it. My 4-iron can carry up to 200 with really good contact, but average is around 190. I have been debating if I should just replace the 3-wood with a utility iron, but can't convince myself to do it.

Another very interesting video because I have also been looking at replacing my 19 degree hybrid with a higher lofted fairway wood, I play my 15 degree 3 wood at 42" and carry it about 275 while I carry my 3 iron 230-235 so I am basically looking for a 250 club. I just feel that the standard length of most fairway woods these days is just too long, so I have been thinking along the same lines as Ian and I have recently thought about trying a 5 wood at 41" because I play in the wind quite often and I tend to launch most 7 woods way too high.

How about ditch the three wood and get a five wood and a driving iron! Something I recently did and have loved it. Yeah I can't reach a green from 275 but I had no confidence hitting my three wood from 275 anyways. Also I could lower the loft on my five wood and open up the face so I have a ton of confidence and hitting it and it's a solid 240 to 260 club for me now and it lands pretty soft
