Midori is owned and produced by Suntory throughout the world. It was exclusively produced in Japan from 1964 and known as Hermes Melon Liqueur. It wasn’t until later that it was renamed to Midori which translates to “green” in Japanese. It started to gain traction in international markets after it was launched in New York City in 1978. It became a popular ingredient on back bars throughout the world.
The recipe was apparently tweaked around 2013 - reducing the sugar content and having a fresher melon taste, more reminiscent of the premium grade of musk melons that are used to produce the vibrant green liqueur.

MIDORI SOUR
This 3-ingredient sour recipe is by far the best Midori Sour version I've tried to date. The Midori melon liqueur has enough sweetness to balance the acidic lime juice and the egg whites bring a nice texture to this melon flavoured cocktail.
INGREDIENTS
- 60mL Midori Melon Liqueur (2 oz)
- 30mL Fresh Lime Juice (1 oz)
- ¾ Egg White
MIDORI ILLUSION
The Midori Illusion has also been known as a popular shooter recipe but serve it tall over ice and you have a sweet, refreshing, citrus and pineapple cocktail.
INGREDIENTS
- 60mL Midori Melon Liqueur (2 oz)
- 15mL Vodka (½ oz)
- 15mL Triple Sec (½ oz)
- 30mL Fresh Lemon Juice (1 oz)
- 30mL Pineapple Juice (1 oz)
MIDORI SPLICE
The aptly named Midori Splice tastes remarkably similar to that of a Splice ice cream. Flavours of fresh melon and coconut make a deliciously sweet tropical cocktail.
INGREDIENTS
- 30mL Midori Melon Liqueur (1 oz)
- 30mL Malibu (1 oz)
- 90mL Pineapple Juice (3 oz)
- Cream
JAPANESE SLIPPER
The Japanese Slipper is a citrusy tart, melon cocktail that was first created in Melbourne (Australia) at Mietta's Restaurant in 1984.
INGREDIENTS
- 30mL Midori Melon Liqueur (1 oz)
- 30mL Triple Sec (1 oz)
- 30mL Fresh Lemon Juice (1 oz)
LA POMME
Discovered after filming and editing that apple cider in the US is actually just unfiltered apple juice! In the video I used alcoholic apple cider (in Australia, that's what apple cider is). It would be much better with cloudy apple juice rather than alcoholic cider!
INGREDIENTS
- 30mL Brandy (1 oz)
- 20mL Midori Melon Liqueur (⅔ oz)
- 10mL Fresh Lemon Juice ( 1/3 oz)
- Apple cider (alcoholic or non-alcoholic)
Music by Enzo - Jones Meadow (Epidemic Sound): www.epidemicsound.com/track/y...

The 3 ingredient Midori Sour is my absolute out of the 5 - make sure you try it if you have a bottle of the green stuff lying around. FYI, didn't realise that 'apple cider' is the US means apple juice >_< so I used an alcoholic cider in the last cocktail when it should have been juice. I think it would be aiight with cloudy apple juice.. check out the BAMBOO STRAWS (Worldwide Shipping): bit.ly/buy-bamboo-straws

Apple cider and Apple juice are a little bit different. Apple juice is more refined/filter where I guess cider is more earthy, it's just smashed up apples. Now Hard Cider is alcoholic like beer, I knew what you were talking about. And lastly there hot apple cider which is not alcoholic but you pour Apple cider in a large pot, toss in some mulling spices (cinnamon sticks, cloves, allspice and something else I'm forgetting) let it simmer on the stove for the afternoon and OMG warm, tasty, earthy. It's a fall season tradition with Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I would add the "Piggelin", named after the Swedish ice popsicle with a similar taste. 1 oz Midori 1 oz Vodka 4-5 oz of lemon-lime soda (7up, Sprite etc) Pour the first two ingredients into a highball glass filled with ice and top up with soda. Give it a gentle stir to combine.

My go to drink involves midori, and it is super simple. I fill a glass with ice, pour in 1 part midori, 2 parts ginger ale, and then squeeze in 2 lime slices and drop them in as well, then stir. The flavors mix so well together and it is super refreshing. If you use chilled ginger ale, it helps the ice not melt as fast as well. I make it for friends who visit all the time and they love it!

Yeah those bright pink neon colored cherries (or in the Japanese Slipper case one stemmed IMHO is the best) are also my choice of cherries here! As you said it, stands out better, gives it a nice contrast (green-red) and overall looks somewhat nicer, since the midori is also quite neon-y colored. Hands down the best Midori cocktail there is. I could engulf thousands of these in a single night.

Grabbed a bottle of Midori on a whim and pulled up the first Steve video I could find on it. Just tried a Midori sour and Japanese Slipper. I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised. I was expecting a very artificial taste from something so neon green but honestly? It's light and refreshing. I've gone from doubting the validity of a spirit to thinking it may possibly become a staple in my home bar.

Midori is a criminally underrepresented liqueur. This stuff is great in tropical cocktails, but it mixes with even the most uninteresting spirits very well. Midori plays nice with others but truly is best enjoyed when its the star of the show like a pearl harbor or midori sour. All these cocktails showcase what this funky green liq is all about. Hey Steve - If you want got a bottle of midori kicking around, mix it with some Bacardi dragonfruit-strawberry rum and a fruit juice of your choice. Make it boozy, lots of the rum, the midori effortlessly smooths out the burn and adds a splendid subtle twist to an otherwise overly sweet sorority party rum.

I remember in the late 80s having a blended Midori Sour at a bar in California. So good and to me, it tasted just like a Jolly Rancher watermelon candy. I think maybe it was a regional thing, or maybe an 80s thing, as a lot of cocktails were blended at the time. I take it that isn't so much in favor now?
