CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Adam (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) informs his mother, Diane (Anjelica Huston), that he has cancer.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Written by Will Reiser who based the film on his own experiences fighting cancer, Jonathan Levine's poignant comedy 50/50 stars Joseph Gordonn-Levitt as Adam, a 27-year old public radio employee who discovers he has cancer. As his best friend Kyle (Seth Rogen) tries to help out, his girlfriend Rachael (Bryce Dallas Howard) proves to be a less than ideal life partner for this particular crisis. All the while, Adam's overprotective mother Diane (Anjelica Huston) tries to overcome her son's continued attempts to keep her out of his life. As Adam begins to discover how hard it is to deal with his situation, and to maintain various relationships in his life, he begins seeing a young counselor (Anna Kendrick) who might prove to be just as helpful personally as she is professionally. Matt Frewer and Philip Baker Hall co-star as Adam's fellow chemotherapy patients.

Gordon-Levitt was great, but it was Anjelica who tore me up... It's, it's just exactly how a mother would take this notice. The sweet attempt to make tea, how she looked at him, how she hugged him and cried... Perfect. Just perfect. And sadly it could have been because just two years before the making of this film, Anjelica lost her adored husband by cancer..

more like a kid that dropped the bomb on why they did something that got them in trouble and is just waiting for the "grown up" to just deal with it....but isn't sure how to deal with disbelief cuz they felt like they said all there was to say. like for instance there is no response to "what do you mean you felt suicidal from not finishing the Golden Mile when you were a kid?" cuz that's what it is.

I remember when my aunt-in law’s mom was first diagnosed with cancer. In her last few months, she was so fragile and skinny, nothing but flesh and bones. She wasn’t even all there anymore, mentally. Only slept and moaned and cried in pain. Family brought her home so she can die somewhere peaceful and all I can think about was her mother. The poor woman was 96 years old, watching her child suffer a slow and painful death and there was absolutely nothing she could do about it. Can’t even imagine the pain it must’ve been for a mother to see their child go in such a way. I know this is what Adam’s mom must’ve been fearing as well. No parent wants to see their child suffer and no parent wants to outlive them either

Still though, I feel for them both but imagine as a parent finding out your child has cancer. It's one of the worst things you could hear. Edit: I was a teen when I typed this and it was right around the time someone close to me had died from cancer so I wasn't really thinking about the cancer patients feelings. The only way I could even truly know is by developing it myself. Sure I witnessed it with my older sister when I was a kid, I still would never physically know what it's like.

i know from personal experience to say that i have cancer is very vague. there are many different kinds of cancer that can affect different areas of the body. some are not terribly severe. i had thyroid cancer which is actually very common and if detected early is fairly simple to remove. they just surgically remove your thyroid then you take a pill everyday to replace what your thyroid makes. no chemo involved. i had thyroid cancer in december of 2000. i had my thyroid removed , i take the pill once a day and i am fine. there are some cancer where they can simply remove the affected organ. i also had my right kidney removed about 6 years ago from cancer. i dont even realize that i dont have a right side kidney

Wouldn't she want to know the type and stage? I mean...cancer could be anything from skin to liver, etc...

This is not bad. But I still think Tommy Wiseau handles such revelations more smoothly.🤔

It's strange she doesn't ask what kind? Where? What stage? It's just generic cancer.

Pretty sure she was just too upset and in shock to think or care about such details in that exact moment, she just knew it was scary and a big deal. Given how desperate she was to be involved, wanting to move in, drive him to appointments, and overall take care of him, I'm sure she asked those questions later off-screen.
