I built a 50 before I retired. You are right it’s a major undertaking to get it finished. Measure a lot and cut once. At least you know how to go about it next time. Great work!

I built something similar 5 years ago using a Bat EX action with a 42" x 2" Lilja barrel , "Talbot" reamer, Flavio Fare trigger and McMillan Super 50BR stock. Good to see someone showing the details you do as there's not much online relating to the BMG.

I use a mini lathe for doing small metal work. Even soft aluminum is a pain to use a parting tool with it. Chatter and part breakage is a serious issue. I am glad you mentioned it. I also got a good laugh about my epic fails with parting tools =)

One of the biggest problems I had when screwing with my 50 WAS lack of info. But you can get some pretty good accuracy out of a bolt action 50 if you take the time to tinker with them. Reloading for them brings a whole new round of issues to deal with. But it is worth it.

Being in the racing engine building industry and using all of this tooling on a daily basis really makes me want to buy the reamers and modify some tooling to do this on the side. looking forward to the build. Just purchased my third cadex rifle myself. This one is the cdx-40 375 cheytac 32' barrel 1/10 twist. Found out that the desert tech 352 grain ammo is a little challenging when it comes to chambering but cadex is working with me to resolve that issue. My two other cadex rifles are the cadex Tremor 50 bmg (artic white and desert tan) Both are spot on and massive without a single hiccup...... I'll stay tuned to your build and look forward to 375 cheytac build afterwards...FYI The hornady 750 grain amax is the most accurate 50bmg ammo bar none

Lookout Paul Phillips, here comes Gavin! 😁 I built one of the Grizzly Big Bore rifles back in the 90's from some plans from the OEM. It was a fun build. It's the shell holder type action. I want to say I got the reamer from LGS, I think that's right anyway. It's fun to shoot for sure. Really enjoying this build you have going and I can't wait to see the final product. Great work as always.

Nice Build👍 but for serious ELR work ,416 barrett or 460 Steyr. Paul Phillips prefers the 416 barrett. I personally like 460 Steyr better, 650 grains at 3200 fps, if you push those hard. Greetings from Europe

What's the honest truth?... Would you be able to get the same perfect results on your smaller precision Mathews lathe, or does a project of this size need to be done on a bigger lathe to get this quality of a finished product?
@greatdane3343
@greatdane3343 Жыл бұрын
The results are down to rigidity and what the tradesperson accepts. The only real restriction on a job of this size is the spindle bore diameter in relation to the barrel...if you choose to hold it through the headstock. In fact, if he can use the smaller lathe with it's narrower headstock and without that ridiculously huge chuck, he wouldn't need to make an extension for the barrel to be able to hold it properly on the outboard side. Keep in mind that he is sponsored by PM (and others) to promote the machines 😉
@brucethom4957
@brucethom4957 Жыл бұрын
I would like to hear Gavin's comment on this as well. I can tell you from personal experience, that I may be able to do as good of a job on a smaller, cheaper lathe - but it certainly requires more time, and finesse to do it. Even Gavin's big lathe is light duty by my standards. I have similar size machines - but they weigh another 1500 lbs more. The extra weight is in the bed, the carriage and the tailstock. For chamber reaming large chambers, the extra weight/rigidity of the larger quill in the tailstock is a huge help.
