Winter North Atlantic, very angry seas
Confronting a storm is like fighting God. All the powers in the universe seem to be against you and, in an extraordinary way, your irrelevance is at the same time both humbling and exalting.

i rode on this ship, as a passenger, the year after this happened. i saw lots of pictures of what happened all around the ship. there were many cars damaged. one picture showed the roll angle at 52 degrees. we got 35 degrees on my trip and that was fun. and by fun i mean, i enjoy hitting my head on the wall much quicker than i could do myself. the guys who work on that ship and other like it are fantastic, professional and terrible dart players.

As long as I live I will never believe this is any type of common occurrence for these people, but if it is true, I now have an even more profound respect for the people that chose this type of profession !! no matter how many times a person lives this experience, it can never be anything less than a nightmare! To anyone doing this type of work I salute you and you have my utmost respect.

This looks like fun time all around. I did shop time in the south china sea and weathered some stiff weather, but the storms off the north Atlantic are no joke. I don't think they had any doubt she would hold up, but it can get pretty dodgy on the bridge. Everyone else is going below decks and getting in their berths.

Agreed! Just looking at her heading in relation to the sea and swell, she appears to be wandering all over the compass, while the direction of sea and swell appears to be relatively stable. If you have a confused or cross sea and swell you should set a course between them, with one on each bow. To have them all on the same side is to court trouble. Captain Colin Smith. M.Sc.

When a ship puts out to sea, it's customary to tie down all possible missile hazards. The bridge on this vessel seems to have missed something. I was aboard a US Navy destroyer in the fall of '69 in the N.Atlantic in a storm. We took 2 - 51 deg. rolls. The ship was only capable of sustaining 57 or 58 deg. without capsizing. It was flat out scary. The sea can be an enchanting mistress or terribly unforgiving. She has an allure that only a seafarer will understand.

Captains have tactics to help keep the boat upright. But of course boats can only handle such big waves no matter how they're handled. Captain Techniques (Some): Hit the wave at a 45 Degree angle Don't go to fast or to slow, go fast enough to conquer the wave, but not to smash, and dont go to slow as to be lifted and rolled by the waves. This technique is known as graceful gliding. - Those are a few.
