Recently we relocated. I decided to check out a small family grocery. I expected the prices to be higher but instead I found them to be very reasonable and it's 17 miles closer. I talked to the owner and he is willing to order cases of our favorite items that he didn't carry. I'm thrilled...I'm supporting our neighbor AND saving money.

I have to say this: don’t be too frugal on groceries. I’ve noticed by downsizing my grocery budget I don’t like my own cooking but when I make food at home like chipotle bowls and açaí bowls I get more excited about eating at home than eating out. Get food you like, frugal is fine but not too frugal.

Tip #51 Wrap celery in foil. It will stay fresh and crisp for weeks. Tip #52 Use glass jars to store cucumbers into serving sizes and store in glass jars. I save glass jars like spaghettis jars for storing veggies and even strawberries. It extends the life of product.

We had a missionary from Japan teach us how to prepare recipes with less meat. As a result, we found that the recipes tasted just as good with less meat. Also, skipping 1-2 days of using meat stretches the groceries too. I have been following you for some time, and I have found the ways to save on groceries a great help. Thanks for sharing with us.

I especially love the clearance items!!! Our Walmart has a clearance end cap where I look first, but get an eye for spotting the clearance items on the shelves too. In Walmart look for larger yellow stickers on the shelves near the items. Recently got Newman's OWN salad dressing for 80 cents, Bush kidney beans in the larger cans for 25 cents, seasonal coffee flavor k cups for $3.00 box of 24, and sweetened condensed milk for 50 cents. My husband came to the store with me on that run and watched what I was doing and said "that's a game for you isn't it!"

Hi Hope and Larry. I’m fairly new to your channel and am loving it. I just wanted to comment on retirement. My family of four lived below our means most of our lives. Our home is paid for, cars paid for and no debt. Kids are grown and on their own. Because, we lived the way your family does, we are enjoying retirement without losing a nights sleep. Still frugal, more by choice than necessity. Please remember, getting older and being debt free is incredibly calming.

Value in what you buy & the friends you make is important. I lost my best friend in October, I'm turning 65 & short on flesh & blood friends so this morning I did some internet detecting, I found two brothers from my boyhood & drinking years, their addresses & phone numbers. Mike was two years older & with me in Boy Scouts, we later became drinking buddies. He was from my Hard Scramble years & that type years for him as well. Anyways I hope to fill the empty spaces of phone calls I miss between my mother & I & my best friend, a good conversation with a friend makes these times go down better.

Grocery stores sure have marketing strategies. Just today I went to purchase strawberries on sale. Of course they had whipped cream and pound cake next to them. I almost picked up that can of whipped cream and realized the price and told myself “No” I’m not paying that and I don’t need it! Also here’s a tip: check your drugstores for groceries! CVS has some great food sales combining manufacturer coupons, their crt coupons and extra bucks.

I find it very nice to hear that American stores will sell items that are on demand around popular holidays at a discounted price. Here in Denmark, it’s the other way around: Stuff like baking goods, butter, cinnamon, vanilla and pork/duck will be hugely expensive in December, when everyone wants these things for Christmas, etc. Lovely video as always, Hope and Larry. I will always buy generic store-brand products for myself (in order to be able to afford the really expensive, brand-name food for my cats 😂). If I were to come up with additional suggestions, it would be to: - cut your alcohol consumption (or at least enjoy your cocktail hour at home), - take the expiration dates with a grain of salt (here in Denmark, they’re very cautious about them, and you can easily add a day or two to something like bread or eggs), and - being Danish, I would be remiss if I didn’t suggest that you use your bike rather than your car when possible. It’s amazing how many groceries you can lug home on a bicycle handlebar. 🚴🏽‍♀️❤️

My father was raised during the depression in a family with 11 children. Every dinner was served with popcorn as a filler. Larry would probably like that! While popcorn may be non traditional today one could serve rice, potatoes or breads as the choice if one is still hungry after eating their regular portion. Or add these cheaper foods to the main portions to make them stretch further.

I have so many food allergies and food intolerances as well as preexisting conditions that I got my doctor to refer me to a nutritionist. She has me write down what I am going to eat in advance and then hold myself accountable. I do it for two weeks instead of a month because we get paid every two weeks. Not only did it help not only my A1C go down a half a point in 6 months but also my husband's. It had the benefit of reducing our food budget and our food waste which I wasn't expecting. I also found that when I was writing down the areas I needed to make corrections in that the answer was to make a version from scratch that was lower in salt, sugar, and fat that could be potentially be cheaper and which didn't include my food allergies and intolerant like corn in high fructose corn syrup.

I like the idea of portioning the meat before freezing. Often, I have too much frozen meat and end up cooking the whole package and throwing some away because the leftovers don't get eaten. Additionally, it takes up space in the fridge and ends up obscuring other foods that should be eaten up soon. Sadly, these get pushed to the back and end up getting thrown out. I am going to work on portioning ahead of time. Thank you

I cleaned out all my cabinets, made a list on inventory, mark off each time I use. Keeps me from duplications. Throughout the week I will list what was used up then have a grocery list of what is really needed. One store has a Senior Day and give everyone over 65 a 10% off everything. Share shopping day with a friend or neighbor go together, saves gas. My refrigerator was set up a little too high turned it down, also did this with my AC, now set at 80 instead of 75. Eggs were $5.00 for 18 eggs, can bake with apple sauce or mayonnaise. Have a chocolate cake mix made with myo, was popular during WW!!, delicious, extra moist. When making salads, I mix mayo with water or salad dressing, this saves on mayo. Still trying to find cheaper ways to buy veggies, since it is a lot healthier it still is rather pricey. Canned/frozen are substitutes but sometimes not as tasty. Thank you for all your ideas, your great and doing a wonderful job!!

Also, don't ignore organic products. I found an organic beef roast one time that was marked down because it was close to date cheaper than the regular beef roast. I buy a lot of close to date meat that I put in the freezer. Also, look for clearance items either on the shelves or at a certain location in the back of the store. Great finds! Good buys you have to spend more sometimes such as buy 2 get one free. Go several times a week to find the bargains if possible. Biggest thing is know your PRICES!

My tips would be to shop alone so you aren't distracted. And always have an insulated shopping bag with you even if you aren't planning to buy frozen items. Yesterday, I found a great buy on frozen orange roughy when shopping at the bulk food store. The day was warm so I had to wrap my frozen fish in my poncho ! And cut my trip short so things wouldn't thaw. (Now my poncho smells like fish and I have to go back our again to finish my weekly shopping! 😕)

I find it odd that in all the "how to save money on groceries" videos that no one has ever said to simply reduce how much you eat. The average American eats 3600 calories a day. More than any other country in the world. If your BMI is over 25, you would be healthier if you ate less calories. 30% of children are obese or overweight in this country. I know this is a sensitive subject but for every extra 200 calories/day that someone eats, it costs an average of $3100 per year in additional health care costs. T2 diabetes is an epidemic in our country and is completely reversable. How and how much we eat will determine our living expenses in so many ways. Medical debt is the number one cause of bankruptcy in the USA. The savings on groceries for cutting back is significant in the short term but even more significant in the long term.

Unfortunately, it doesn't always work out that way, ie the more you spend the more calories you eat. The poor usually eat higher calorie, higher carbs, higher fat cheaper foods. While slimmer people usually are eating healthier, Salmon, berries, more expensive yet lower calorie, lower carb foods.

Hi Hope and Larry, Thank you for all your helpful content. I’m in England, UK and think your advice and experience is just as relevant and appreciated here as it will be in the US. I tried inventorising perishable items and other items I had at home, and found it quite painstaking, despite having what I thought was a small inventory, and then I found keeping the running list tricky, and eventually let it slide and couldn’t face returning to it. Also I didn’t figure out how to use my inventory proactively to use up my perishable items. I bet you have a system for doing it! So I would love it if you would make a video to show how you do it it. Looking forward to finding out how already...
@michelinebeattie7789

Hi. I just started doing the inventory process. I just took a day, took most everything out of my pantry if I wasn't able to see it all at a glance. Sometimes just had to remove stuff from front of a shelf so I could see in the back. Then, took paper and wrote down what I had. I just wrote what it was and how many I had of that item. I returned product as I did one shelf at a time. Then I took the list and made up categories. Breakfast, Soups, Pasta, Condiments, etc. Then I looked at what I had previously written and put my items in the proper category. I put these category lists taped inside the doors of my pantry. Each item was listed on a separate line and tally marks next to it for the number of that item that I had. Now when I take an item from the pantry, I cross off one tally mark. I keep a pen in the pantry. When I am down to only 1 of an item. I take correction tape, and swipe it across all the marked off tally marks. I have an empty white board type sticky note on the inside of pantry door along with my list of pantry items. When I have swiped correction tape over a line of tally marks, I get my whiteboard marker and list that item on it. My whiteboard is my grocery list. I did the same for my freezer and refrigerator. I have the freezer list taped to freezer door on the outside of the freezer. I only have a sticky note on the outside of the refrigerator door. As I get low on an item in refrigerator, I can see all the shelves, so I just add it to my sticky note. If I am down to my last item of a category in my freezer, I swipe the marked off tally marks with correction tape and add it to my sticky note on refrigerator door. When I add something to freezer or pantry that is not listed, I just add it to list. Once you start this, it is easy to keep up. I just went grocery shopping and as I put things away, just had pen in hand to add tally marks to list as to how many cans of, say, green beans I added into the pantry or ground beef I added to freezer. The hardest part of this system is when you first create the lists, after that it is easy peasy.

@@donnasnell5250 hi Donna. Yes, I base my meal plans on what I have in freezer, then my pantry, then the sales of the store that might fit in to a recipe. I have made a list of meals that go with different meats or items I have in freezer that also contain items I normally stock in my pantry, then check for additional items I may need to purchase. If that item extra I need is on sale I get it. If not, I either find a substitute for it or sometimes just eliminate it from recipe. The whole system works together as one unit.

If I find that I have perishables that are on the brink of going bad, and have no immediate plan for use, I cut it up, pop it into a freezer bag and freeze it. You could also look into dehydrating items for future use. I try not to buy perishable items unless I have a planned use for them. Life happens though.

@tenthousanddaysofgratitude 2 жыл бұрын
Easiest way to use perishables is to buy only what you regularly eat and then cook them. Having stuff cooked and available to throw in your recipe helps me use them up. At the end of the week, a soup full of leftover veg and a big scrambled egg hash with leftovers thrown in helps. Buy less - that’s a key! If you want to dehydrate it, do it before it’s starting to go off. You want your food to be in good condition when you dehydrate it. Something I have done with non perishable items is separate by year of expiry. Eat the stuff expiring soon first. Got smoked oysters you don’t know what to do with? Well it might be time for a nibble dinner. Crackers and oysters with nuts and fruit. It might not be your favourite but tastes better than the bitter taste of food waste. 😂 In the UK see if you can find Superscrimpers series - lots of great tips. Think it was channel 4. My UK tips - buy the weird looking veg that they package as imperfect. Buy Supermarket basic brand - they are made in the same factory as name brand. Try one and see which you like. They are pennies on the pound for name brand. Also know when the markdowns come out at your grocer. I used to get 99 percent off foods on Sunday nights at a particular m$S Near me. I got meats, ready meals, bakery items and veg for so cheap. Good luck!

As a vegan I don't buy animal products, either, of course. When I buy large packages of frozen vegetables, let's say, at BJ's I always repackage them into serving size containers first. I try to do the same with things like crackers or cereal ( which I don't buy very often) so they don't go stale and don't get eaten all at once. Very good advice!

@@elizabethivey9326 I don't eat meat any more, but use lentils as a substitute often. You would brown your ground beef and then add cooked lentils in most cases. Just make sure you're using brown or green lentils. The red ones disintegrate too fast. (The red lentils are tasty, but I wouldn't use them to replace ground beef if I ate meat.) Hope this helps.

Just did this recently putting 1/2 cup of cooked lentils in each pound of ground beef. Made several recipes I do not like the concept for burgers makes them crumbly not hold together. Seems to have worked fine in meatloaf. Also for loose meat works well.

Great tips. Although we eat meat and raise and butcher or own beef, I'm preparing less in my reciepes and also trying to do a meatless meal every week. We also raise our own vegetables and freeze/can for the winter months. Lately I've been only grocery shopping once or twice a month. Definitely use the coupons and shop the loss leaders. Mostly you have to learn to plan your meals around what's available on sale not just what you want. I have no problem with buying most things generic brands or shopping for reduced priced items or mark downs. Anxiously awaiting Spring here in SE Indiana so I can get the garden growing.

When I work in a big box store, we had a mayo product that was new to our area that had a coupon for a free jar. It was really tasty (Duke's Mayo) AND it had no added sugar. It was a limit per day, so I'd jsut buy one on my lunch every couple of days, only had to pay tax. My Grammy really liked it, would never have bought it herself as she's never tried it. But after trying it, and finding it to be so low in carbs (she was diabetic), it had become our family favorite. I still try to buy it when I can find it.

I extend the life of fresh produce by rinsing it, shaking it off, then wrapping it in a thin cotton or cotton blend towel. When you take it out to use some of it, rinse the remainder and wrap it again. A head of lettuce lasts us up to 3+ weeks using this method.

For the first time in my 75 years I am only having to prepare food for myself. While it could be extremely cheap, I find it difficult to buy for one person, especially when it comes to fresh fruits and vegetables. Nobody sells a quarter head of cauliflower or broccoli. I bought a bag of frozen broc, cauli and carrots, threw in some fresh mushrooms and froze them in zip lock bags I got at the 'formerly known as the $1 store" now $1.25 store. But in the process I found they had zip lock bags at my regular grocery store in a larger quantity for less per piece than the dollar store.

I shop exclusively at Kroger for the following reasons: They offer a free shopping service and customer pickup, so I don't have to worry about sticking to my list; their Kroger 1-2-3 credit card gives substantial quarterly rebates; their fuel points result in amazing discounts at the gas pump; and their less expensive store brand products are (almost without exception) of equal or superior quality. Like Walmart, they have their own trucking operations, so are likely to have the items you want, and their digital coupons are very generous. I don't eat meat (which is always packed in plastic and/or Styrofoam), and I make my own cleaning supplies and laundry detergent, granola, yogurt, and bread. My checkout total is almost always less than half what it used to be, even with currently inflated prices.

10 days ago I ran out of milk so I have been using my pantry skim milk powder and I am thinking I will keep using that for another week or so since I found two more vacuum sealed mason jars full in the pantry. I only use milk for baking and tea so I should be fine. For lunch I made sauteed vegetables with roasted buckwheat groats (instead of rice) and 1/3 can of mushroom soup for a nice creamy bowl of yumminess. Just being creative with alternatives. Tomorrow when I go pick up prescription, I will be picking up the brussel sprouts that are on sale.. that is it for that store this week. I plan to shop two other stores this weekend on the same route (lost leaders only) and will price match 2 items. Good video as always.

Hi Hope and Larry, Janet from Arizona here. We look at the store app. for digital deals plus we look specifically for items on our grocery list on the app. And let's not forget about Senior Day for those who qualify. For those who are meat eaters, you can buy turkey i.e. turkey sausage, ground turkey, etc. which is about 1/2 the price of beef. When sirloin is on sale you can usually ask the meat department to ground it for you and it will be cheaper than ground beef. I use half of ground meat and substitute the difference with beans.

My food saver has paid for itself many times over. I use it to freeze most everything. Just have to be careful to leave a lot of head space for moister foods. I package two servings per food saver bag, then put those bags in a second larger bag and seal to assure freshness. If I don't feel like using my food saver for frozen items, I use Mason jars for freezing and cover the opening with plastic wrap before putting the lid in. Again, leave a little head space! 👍

Hi Hope, and Larry. Great tips as usual. Ok you asked if you missed anything... Here is one you may have missed or maybe I missed it or maybe it was worded differently... First off, we are not vegan, that being said, here is something I do to combat his meat prices. Choose something cheaper from one item to leave you more money for something else. Like this: I needed some ground beef for a meal I was preparing but it was about 1.00 a pound more than I was prepared to pay. Now on that same shopping trip, I also needed to buy aluminum foil, so what I did was, I bought generic foil which left me enough money to buy the ground beef. You see I normally don't buy generic foil cuz it's too thin and tears too easily but I made an exception this time so I could buy the ground beef. It actually worked out in my favor. Then when I got home, I told my daughter about the rising costs and said we will be eating less meat for a while and checking those sales ads more closely. On another note I just wanted to share a short story: My freezer broke and defrosted almost everything. It was completely full. Kind of a big loss but I was able to give most of it away so it wasn't a total loss. So I went to home Depot after checking in line at prices and I bought a new freezer. It was small and 300.00. I couldn't take it home that day because I didn't have a vehicle to transport it in so I went back the next day to pick it up. And they had it buried in their warehouse and we had to wait about an hour and a half for them to bring it to us. But as a compensation for having to wait so long the store manager gave me a 50% discount on the freezer, what a win. Thanks for sharing all your ideas.

you really have to check prices carefully as sometimes buying individual rather than a multipack is actually cheaper. I have just been shopping to Aldi and needed baby wipes.( I have 2 disabled children and go through a lt) Abox of 6 was £3.29 but and individual pack was only 52p. Needless to say I just bought 16 individual packs,

Have you ever thought of making a reverse budget? In other words start with the budget amount divide by the number of days divide by the number of ounces (using a 4lb per adult goal per day). This would give a per ounce price the purchaser needs to pay or below. You would have to take on account that some items double with water added such as beans or oatmeal or grits or rice. This answers the questions he much food do I need and what can I afford?

2 more tricks for meat. 1) look for the reduced price meat section. It is usually in a corner somewhere and because it is almost at its sell date you can get it for a large percentage off. 2) Find a local butcher with a local source of meat. My local butcher is selling grass feed beef for a lower price than the grass feed beef in the Walmart or Safeway in my town. Pluse he gives a discount if I buy 2 pounds.

You asked for further tips not mentioned. 1. Cook it from scratch vs prepared (you imply this but never just said it) 2.(you mentioned Aldis and Walmart) Don't forget the $1 dollar store even though many items are now $1.25 . 3. Items on the bottom shelf are usually the cheapest, leaving the more expensive brightly colored containers of the Brand names at eye level. 4. Extend 100% juice with seltzer or club soda, makes it healthier than soda and cheaper. 5. Don't buy ' individual' yogurt, buy quart sized, add 6 oz yogurt, fruit and granola to reusable cups. Same for ' indiv snacks' ie raisins, cookies, pretzels ,use snack bags. 6.On-line Delivery vs car. I get a lot of items delivered. If using Walmart, shipping is free if over $35 . Note: you cant get everything but Ive gotten canned beets, corn, soup, clams, spinach, those large Tomatoes you mentioned, soda, seltzer, cereal, dried cranberries, apricots, prunes, pasta sauce, t.p., paper towels, etc... There is also delivery of anything from store available as well at 9$ a month plus tip I used during pandemic which has gone up to 12$, which may be cost effective if your alternative is a cab. (Other stores have delivery plans available at variety of prices). 7. (You could lower the amt. of meat used in a dish as mentioned), Or learn to make some excellent vegetarian dishes for 3-4 meals per week. Some of my favorites are Bean burritos, veggie burgers, pizza , veggie lasagna, Chili made w/tvp, Ratatouille, hot and sour soup, Ramon bowls with asian veggies, and fried rice w/mushrooms. (Some use of cheese/egg not vegan). Bonus* If you are a Senior, some places (TOPS) give discounts ,ask. Also Military, teachers, medical staff at different times of year.

In the past I have had Target price match the price in the app that is lower than the price in the store as long as the item isn't on clearance. You have to buy at the store price but then go directly to the customer service desk and they will look at the app and the receipt and they will refund the difference. I don't know if they still have this policy, but it is worth asking customer service before you check out. We have a red card debit card which gives you a five percent discount so we have to scan all the items before we check out to earn the discount anyway.
