Your tips are almost exactly what my dad does. My parents always buy a vehicle and tell them their "all in price" exactly the same as "out the door". My dad has walked away from many vehicles because they were not willing to negotiate properly. As a woman I feel more confident going to buy a vehicle because of all my dad's teachings over the years. Great work Larry and Hope. Love from Canada.

In place of a Garmin, we use WAZE. Never have had a problem with it. My husband uses it on his phone and I have my phone for phone calls. Works great without buying another device. It also tells you if there is an accident ahead or police using radar for speeding. It also tells you who else around you has WAZE. It tells you where places are like gas, restaurants, and other services. Really good service.

Great video. I got a pre-certified 2009 Honda Accord on the 4th of July weekend 2010. It had 6900 miles on it and I negotiated a 5 year extended warranty at a very good price. It also had a Carfax report. The salesman told me the people who had owned the car previously had twins and purchased an SUV from them. I still own the car and have been more than pleased with it. I keep it in the garage. No food or drink is allowed in this or any car I have ever owned. I keep all bills to show the next owner that the car was properly maintained. The title is also kept with the maintenance records. The car is regularly washed and vacuumed.

Our cars were 10 and 13 years old. We had to get another one this year. We had been researching cars for months and narrowed it down to a specific model and year, based on reliability. We watched the dealer websites and autotrader everyday. When the model we were looking for came up, with a clean carproof report , low mileage and a good price, we called the dealership right away (they didn't even have pictures posted yet). It was a city about 45 minutes away. We went to look at the car that day. When we were negotiating price we negotiated the "out the door" price. We bought from a Toyota dealer that had serviced the vehicle and taken it back in trade. We were thrilled that we were able to pay cash for it. We are now saving to buy our next vehicle in about 3 years times

Larry and Hope, before I smartened up and started buying Japanese cars, I had a Triumph. There was a joke going around in Silicon Valley that the reason British engineers got out of school a semester early was because they didn't study about gaskets and seals. lol....too true. "The shape of things to come" became "the shape that's in the shop" all too often. Much as I love sports cars, as I property owner, I often find myself schlepping home trees, lumber and pre-built shop cabinetry so my weapon of choice these days is a little Honda CRV that's nowhere near as sexy as the Mazda RX7 I got when my Triumph died, but I don't worry about having room for a 90+ lb dog, either. Now to just train him to walk up the ramp....

Good strategies, Sherry! My dream car would be a Mazda MX-5 Miata - WAY over our budget, not practical for the family, but FUN, FUN FUN!! So...the Honda Fit is what we bought and I love it as well. At least it's a stick shift and I can make creative motor sounds and pretend I'm driving a sports car. For you, the Honda CRV is VERY practical. Those are great cars for your use and need. I'm sure your 90 pound dog thanks you... LOL!

Years ago, a salesman at our Honda dealership tried to interest me in a used car that looked like it had blood stains on the interior ceiling. Nope. I ended up buying my Hyundai Accent new for less than what that used Honda would have cost. Had it for 13 years. Ironically enough, I later traded my Hyundai(good trade in value)for a used certified pre-owned Honda CRV at that same Honda lot years later. 12 years later, still driving it. If financing, it's been suggested to take care of that first before going to a dealership bc you may get a better deal than financing at the lot.

So I needed a car right away didn't have much time to think and being only 19. I went with the lease to afford payments better. I love being worry free and no repairs for 5 years for now its worth the extra money . But never buying a brand new car again! I've bought cars for cash and I've financed cars. It's about 50/50. I used to have a sinking fund for next car/car repairs. That didn't work. I love that this video has so much information on how to buy a used car. I like the example Larry gave about walking away from the Honda Fit because the dealer wouldn't sell it for the price he was willing to pay. Two months later you got the very car that you wanted by being patient and not emotionally attached. Our son went to Toyota to buy a used car in 2014. He was able to get a 2013 Toyota Corolla for $12, 500. The Corolla's are the cars that they let people use as loaners when owners would take their cars to be serviced; and there were five to choose from. It had a little over 20,000 miles for a one year old car, but it was clean and Toyota gave him the three year bumper to bumper warranty. If he had bought the car brand new in 2013 he would have paid about 19K out the door. The sales woman said they always sell the loaner cars at a good price each year. Who knew?

I ended up stacking rebates and offers to get a "new graduate" $1,000 off (2 years after I'd graduated. It never hurts to ask!) and zero percent financing for 5 years on a new vehicle. I checked about 200 miles out from the dealership near me (as Larry suggests) and knew there was a loaded vehicle on their lot and the closest base model was 2 states away. I let them know I needed a vehicle the next day (true) and would like the base model as I wasn't paying for "extras". After walking away and coming back to see if they could get the base model in time, they offered the loaded model on their lot for the cost of the base model they would have to bring in. I had a new car, loaded, with 35 miles on it for under 14,000, and it lasted me 12 years with no major repairs. The caveats are that with it being financed, I did have to up the insurance on it for those first 5 years and keep up with the payments in order to keep the zero percent.

The VIN will only show if the car has been in an accident IF that accident has been reported. Ask me how I know… You must look up recalls on the car and ask the dealership for proof that they’ve been done. I’m not sure how you get your name on the list to be informed about future recalls. Also look at the recalls. I once bought a car, that turned out to be one of only 2000 made at a particular factory, all other cars of that model car were made at a different factory. Cars from that factory had serious recalls every year-including the first year when I had to have the transmission replaced at 200 miles. The dealers HATED honoring recalls on that car they were all big deals and the dealers saw them as money losers so much so that they refused to replace the back seat seat belts when recalled because we didn’t have children regularly riding in the back seat-which isn;t their place to decide. I’d never buy that brand again. FYI, I would look up that car in car guides that supposedly reported recalls and most of them didn’t mention the recalls on those cars because most cars of that model didn’t get recalled just the 2000 lucky ones needed them. I’m presuming that computer tracking would make such car guides obsolete. My now 13 year old Toyota has only 150,000 well maintained miles, still runs well and has had few recalls. I’m aiming for 250-300,000 miles on it. I’m still really happy about that purchase. Don’t give up comprehensive automatically when your car is paid for because if your car is stolen or totaled you have no coverage. Given the current cost of used cars that could really hurt. If you have a popular to steal car consider getting a kill switch.

I have gotten such killer deals on vehicles - I should hire myself out. Shop on Christmas Eve - do not budge on price & get as many perks as they have. We were there looking & after spending hours with us - we were ready to walk away by 8pm. They were not used to a woman being the sales guru (I have a degree n technical sales). Got a 0% loan with all the bells & whistles on my husband’s black Toyota truck - the young guy who helped us said a letter we got it for less money than he had ever seen - they just wanted the sale & to got home on Christmas Eve, LOL. My last vehicle was another not planning to buy scenario. Got a 3 year old low mileage Lincoln MKZ Hybrid. off Craigslist. The lady was leaving on vacay & just wanted to get rid of it because she was divorcing & liked her SUV more. I made an offer of $10,000 - thousands less than the value. She asked if I could go up a little - I offered $10,500 & she took it - just wanted to get ready to leave on her vacation! I can get 42 mpg - 32 with the air blasting. Have never had one problem with my MKZ.

Perfect timing for this video! We have begun looking for my daughter's first vehicle. She only has $3500.00. It's really hard to find something and especially since it's two ladies looking... Prices have really gone up as well. We are praying to be led to the right one asap. Great video friends! Blessings!

Though we don't agree on everything, when we married 33 years ago we agreed that we would work as a team and compromise on areas of disagreement. Consequently, most of what we do is a result of those compromises. However, I suppose that one area we disagree on is that Larry would go out to eat more than I do and the fact that I worry about money more than he does.
@larryware1
@larryware1 2 жыл бұрын
We are a very "normal" couple and have our share of disagreements. As Hope mentioned, compromise and putting the relationship ahead of our opinions and tastes have helped us blend outcomes of decisions where we initially disagreed. When we are in total disagreement we both back off and don't go in that direction. We pray and ask God to give us His mind on matters we can't come to a common solution for and when we are forced into making a choice on a matter. This helps immensely. Great question!

@UndertheMedian
@UndertheMedian 2 жыл бұрын
Our LEAF was a 2011 model and our range was dropping fast. So, we had to decide if we wanted another electric or a gas car. Larry is retiring in a year and the LEAF was his car to commute to and from work. We wanted something with better range for retirement. We chose a Honda Fit (6 speed) and Larry is getting 45 mpg - very similar to our Prius. We, honestly, miss the LEAF, but we don't regret our final decision.

You went from an electric car back to a gas car? Was that because you don't yet have the infrastructure in place to charge away from home? That's an issue here in the UK. But I know that electric cars are a lot more to buy than gas cars too - there is quite a lot to think about when it comes down to it, and I would love to know what your thinking is/was on the electric car and how it changed, especially since you went back to a gas car.

Larry and Hope, I was surprised to see that you bought a new car when your oldest car was only 10 years old. My husband and I buy Toyotas and keep them forever. My husband kept his last car for 18 years and 318,000 miles. The car I drive right now is a 17 year old Toyota with 120,000 miles on it. We get routine maintenance, but have not had any big repairs. I’m just curious why you didn’t keep your car longer. Did you just want a new car? If so, there is nothing wrong with that. I’m not judging. I’m just curious.
@UndertheMedian

We still have the Toyota and I primarily drive it. We replaced Larry's electric car. The battery was nearing the end of its life and the range on a full charge was greatly diminished. It's the electric Leaf that was traded in to get the Honda Fit.

We loved owning an electric car. Our Leaf was a 2011 model and the battery was degrading quickly. Our range was down significantly. Jenny, I would try looking at an older Honda or Toyota for reliability. Depending on your budget, you might have to go back 10 years and look at mileage that is over 100,000 miles. There are many good cars in that category.

Why did you let go of the electric?
@UndertheMedian
@UndertheMedian 2 жыл бұрын
It was a 2011 and the battery was wearing out. As electric cars age, the battery degrades, resulting in a much shorter range. It's cost prohibitive to have the battery replaced.
@larryware1
@larryware1 2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, as Hope mentioned, the batteries on the early model LEAFs just weren't that good. They were only designed to last 10 years, which they did. Last winter I could only go 16 miles total on a full charge with the heater running. We traded it in in Feb. for our Honda Fit, which I love - and with the prices and availability of used cars now, we're glad we did.

HOW DOES ONE SAVE UP FOR A CAR AGAIN WHEN ONE LIVES ON A FIXED INCOME AS RECENTLY I SAVED ENOUGH MONEY TO MAKE A DOWN PAYMENT AND THE OWNERS OF THE CAR LOT "LIED" TO ME ABOUT WORKING WITH THEM ABOUT PAYMENTS AND THEY DECIDED THEY WANTED "ALL THE MONEY" AT ONCE AND I LOST THE MONEY AND THE CAR. EXPLAIN WHY, MISS HELEN
@larryware1
@larryware1 2 жыл бұрын
Well, first, you want to use reliable, reputable dealers to purchase from. That's why in this video we don't recommend purchasing from the private lots - unless you personally know the people. Our worst experience was from a private lot purchase - never again. Also, if you're going to take out a loan, I would recommend doing so with a credit union, if you belong to one, or your own bank. Don't use the loan company through the dealer. Even if they are reputable, you will pay more interest. Your last question: Why did they treat you like this? - should be directed to the lot's management that lied to you. I would also report them to the Better Business Bureau. So sorry you had this experience.
