It’s one of the most iconic video game systems in gaming history, shining bright before burning out and amassing a cult following in the process. Today I thought it would be fun to look back on this beloved console and see what went into its creation, the innovation it provided and of course what ultimately led to its premature death. From its original name to an insanely expensive variant, here are 50 facts about the Sega Dreamcast.

@@steelbear2063 It has more power than you think. It runs at (PAL 720 x 480P at 60fps) which is more demanding than even the PS2's 640 x 480i 30fps, and even it's biggest games like Shenmue run at this resolution too. It has techniques like Deferred Rendering which un-renders textures not visible to the camera to free up resources, giving it more headroom to run bigger games like those on GameCube and Xbox. And is among the first to support true directional lighting, which is ray tracing in it's earliest form and incredibly taxing. I'm surprised these facts weren't mentioned in the video.

@@steelbear2063 SEGA was always ahead. They pushed tech in gaming and always dropped with tech that wasn’t quite as mature as it needed to be, which is what led to their downfall really. Genesis dropped before SNES. SEGA CD & 32X dropped way before Nintendo or even Sony dropped a single disc based game. Saturn dropped before PS1. Dreamcast before PS2, Gamecube, & XBox. They always pushed tech forward.

To this day it's still my favourite console. Gaming owes a lot to that little box of innovation. You're also absolutely right about replacing the drive, it's a must at this point, especially as it opens up the system to play obscure titles we never got. One of my favourites being a typing game based on Evangelion!

Replacing the drive with an ODE is definitely gonna be a must-do mod as drives die, but one really cool thing about playing burned DC discs is that they're not region locked. So as long as Evangelion Typing Project E has a .cdi release [which I haven't looked into despite crying my eyes out to End of Evangelion and 3.0+1.0 at least once a year], it can be played on OG hardware with a burned CD-R

A few things to note regarding some of the info provided in the video: -GD-Rom media disc is NOT AT ALL easy to hack and pirate. Game piracy came about when hackers discovered a loophole in the system's other alternative proprietary disc format known as MIL-CD which was a essentially a compact disc format with multimedia capabilities that was only used on a handful of software in Japan. -Katana was never meant to be final name of the console at any point. It was simply a code name, of which the system received many during its creation like Katana, Blackbelt, Dural as a few examples. -Divers 2000. Not Drivers 2000. -Cannon Spike is only one of the rarest titles exclusively in the PAL region. -Nemoy was not the voice actor for the Seaman creature. He simply voiced the narrator in the game. -The contest to name the console was held internally within SEGA corporate. There has been suggestion that WARP's own Kenji Eno (who had a good partnership position within SEGA) won the contest. While SEGA has never officially confirmed it, I believe Seaman creator Yoot Saito has stated that Eno came up with the name "Dreamcast" during the internal contest to name the system. - A lack of advertising and marketing (especially in US) was definitely not one of the reasons for the system's demise. SEGA spent a reported 100million in advertising alone. With that outta the way, I still want to say thank you for making a video dedicated to Dreamcast. Its one of my all time favorite systems ever made and I love to see the system get some exposure even after so many years have gone by.

10:12 This story is so tragic.... Like he believed so much in the dreamcast, and ultimately died with it. I can't imagine a CEO doing this today, for any company. The only crime Dreamcast was guilty of was being born in the generation of the PS2. It had so many good ideas and pushed boundaries, and encapsulated a very specific visual aesthetic and era of games, pretty much the last era of real artistic innovation in the AAA space. It is absolutely insane how many classic games came out on that system in such a short time. And yeah, that machine is a loud old bastard. I wanted to play my friend's once when I was a kid in the middle of the night, turned the volume down on the TV to 0 and everything, the machine turning on woke everyone up...

I remember reading a old sega magazine in the UK being really sad to read that sega pulling out of the console business. I only heard or read issues with sega 32x/CD/Saturn (btw I love the saturn also my friend who had one introduced me to Tomb raider on it.) I was aware as a little kid that the dreamcast was a target for piracy back in the day and i was one of the cheapskate kids who got some of those games illegally at Flea Markets, but keep in mind I was a child who only could spend weekly 2 or 5 british pounds at the time, I also had the habit of refusing to spend on my school lunch money just so I could buy games legally or ilegally at flea markets for cheap. The dreamcast introduced me to the Phantasy Star Online series, Shenmue, Space Channel 5, Rez, Fur Fighters, Unreal Tournament. I had a ton of games donated to me when I got one even having save files with high level or max level characters so I could just go on phantasy star n just curb stomp the enemies lol. I also had resident evil code veronica (ironically it scared the shit out of me when really it's a joke of a game), Tomb raider the last revelation, Soul Reaver 1, CRAAAAAAAZZZZZZY TAXI 1 and 2, Resident Evil 3 and of course..... sonic adventure 1 n 2.

I love sega dreamcast. We got it about 10 years ago, at the time I didn't know anything about it but at about that time yt community started publishing ton of videos on it. I have built very nice collection, with ton of controllers, lightguns, around 6 VMUs and VGA box. Unfortunately I think VGA box died, around 2019 and that's when I packed it in the closet... All of those games that are on the system are so unique and playable, it's really something. I also love that controller, one of the best from that generation, so comfortable. I should really get new VGA box and hook the dreamcast again. I don't game much but I would game if on dreamcast.

Dreamcast utilized Hall Effect Joysticks all them years ago to prevent stick drift and yet now Console manufacturers probably purposely use potentiometers which wear out so they can continually sell more and more controllers which is a smack in the face of gamers especially since we know stick drift could’ve been fixed if they wanted to fix it but nope not current manufacturers and it’s sad that Sega put actually built high quality controllers which still work to this very day without drift problems

More facts:1) “Project Berkeley” was the code name for Shenmue. 2) Dreamcast hardware limitation permit character models from being able to move individual limbs such as fingers. Sony commercial campaigns for the PS2 constantly showed highlights of PS2 games moving fingers in the commercials. 3) The Dreamcast was developed in collaboration with M$ Bill Gates who assisted in the online features and added Windows CE and directX 4)The Dreamcast like the Sega Saturn has a internal Battery that stores internal options like Date and Time. If you Dreamcast asked you to input date and time on launch. The battery is dead. However. If you turn the Dreamcast on and don’t play any games. The battery recharges. Some people browse the net or just leave the lid up for a hr or 2.
