Did you know that humans have way more than 5 senses? In fact, we have around 50 senses. In this video, I will explain the 5 basic human senses of Sight, Sound, Taste, Smell, and Touch. Then I will explain about 45 OTHER senses that most people don't even think about.
Actors can use this information to better develop their characters and use their own sense-memory to act more realistically.

Just did sense memory for the first time in my college class. I picked something rooted in fear, and I felt fine for most of the day, but now I feel like breaking down and bawling my eyes out. Either way, it did seem useful, I just definitely need therapy before I can use it the way I did.

Yes it can be difficult to explore deeply rooted memories and emotions. Make sure the benefit outweighs the cost.

Wonderful descriptions ! Funny from the perspective of a healing/growing autistic/adhder. Many senses, like hunger even, are common for an Aut to lack ! To add to your list: -Awareness (sense of how expanded/how much information you are able to be aware of) -Energy levels (feeds into our emotions, low, high, but also pent up) -Valence (positive/open/willing to let energy flow/accepting vs negative/contracted/resisting/holding back, also feeds our emotions) might be 2 senses here (also our own and others) -Togetherness/Unity (Contracted emotions = I vs You, Expanded = We, I am part of something bigger) - integral to Feeling you are part of a Family or Team - this also expands all the way to a sense of being one with all of humanity, then life, then the universe/god -Awe/Wonder (we say A Sense of.. not emotion?) -Visual Depth - I can see, but my lenses (according to your video), toggle between flat and deep/detailed perception -perhaps a sense of someone's Intention - though this could go with sensing their energy and valence though, or perhaps as intuition -Desire (could go with Attraction, but towards objects and situations as well) -Coherence - if your heart rate is consistent and your body is humming along or if HR is out of whack I'd so love your input as an actor on - Do you define a Sense as a Feeling that pertains to a specific aspect? What defines an emotion? Because I had Emotions all of my life, but I never knew my ability to Feel was very constricted before. And it makes life completely different ! Fun add ons to paranormal: -Clairsentience feeling -Claircognizance knowing -Clairalience smell -Clairgustance taste

Hi Nikki. Thanks for all the additional senses. It's always interesting to discover new ones. To answer your question, I think we live in this reality and the only way we experience it is through our senses. Senses deliver and interpret the information turning it from unfiltered to filtered. Emotions/Feelings are how we react to that information once it's filtered through our senses. And then our emotions and instincts propel us to take action as a result of those feelings. So for instance you are walking in a dark alley at night, you sense the air, the temperature the darkness and you get the sensation that someone is following you, you hear them, you sense their presence. Then you react to those sensations with emotions...in this case you would most likely feel fear and worry. And your feelings of fear would propel you to take action and do something, freeze up, fight, run away, yell, seek help. Our actions from an acting standpoint are what the audience actually experience they become the choices a character makes and eventually the plotline of their story. Their emotions can be experienced by an audience, but largely remain internal and a person's senses are pretty much internal to them. So much of learning to act it reverse engineering a characters actions (what they do and say) and discovering what emotions lead to them doing those things and what sense and instincts led to those emotions.

You mention the sense of 'Agency,' but, you don't mention the 'Subconscious' as a sense. The first thought or natural behavior when faced with a decision. The original sense or veracity and perception.

oh yeah, that's an interesting addition. Like a sense of the unknown that underlies consciousness. I'll buy that!

Very interesting. However, many of the experiences you list are how the brain interpreted the input from the senses. You are sub classifying some sences; like touch, pressure, temperature; but not others like site or taste. What I found very intriguing is memory as a sense. Can a memory , with no other input/trigger, be the only source of the brains feeling/interpretation?
@AugmentedActor
@AugmentedActor Жыл бұрын
Fair enough on your first point there is a bit of sub classification in the list but I think these are very distinct sensations of which most of them have ties to touch. A few like synesthesia involve hearing and site as well. As to the memory point. I don’t necessarily think a memory alone is a sense. Although one could propose that a dream is a type of memory in which the brain is completely sensing alone without the use of eyes skin tongue or nose. But thats a bit esoteric. My point with memory is that we can sense when we are having a memory and when we are not. And we can also distinguish between a memory and a dream and a daydream and an idea and a future worry. The ability for us to understand our state of mind seems as much of a sense to me as smelling or taste. I do see your points. My list of senses was pulled from several different sources. I think people can definitely hold a different definition of sense and that’s why some lists of senses only include 5, some 10, some 32 and mine…everything I could think of. Haha

I already know my sense of smell is at least damaged (although my taste is mostly fine), I'm having other sense issues like hunger, thirst, not feeling cold, I'm just relearning how to sense or test them. I was just shivering but didn't feel cold so I wore a blanket and eureka I am warm and calm. 🤷‍♂️

That’s interesting. I imagine everyone senses things slightly different than everyone else. Senses are often so difficult to describe to someone else because we just assume everyone has the same sensations.

I believe there are eight basic or primary senses. The Aristotelian five, plus the kinesthetic Spence; the vestibular sense, and the visceral sense: our sense of our bodies that enables us to know our bodies are in space, in other words for we did not have that sense we couldn’t walk or move or hold things etc; and the sense of balance; and the sense of hunger and thirst a asnd nausea; I believe that all other senses fall under these classifications.
@AugmentedActor
@AugmentedActor 3 жыл бұрын
In my research for this, I found several articles that agree with you on that. Some say 5. some say 8. Some say 20. Generally I think you could think of those 8 as classifications of senses and some of the ones I mentioned probably do fit in those classifications or using a combination of them.
