E-Prime Language (a dialect of the English language) helps speakers and writers communicate with clarity and specificity by eliminating metaphoric language.
Users of E-Prime eliminate all forms of the verb "to be" from their communications. In doing so, they find ways to communicate that include the subject of a sentence in the sentence.
If we all used E-Prime in our day to day communications we would eliminate the hypnosis that comes with political speeches, advertisements, legal issues, and religious dogma.
Actors can use this tool to examine their characters and explore what they really mean to say when they speak and writers can use E-Prime to avoid miscommunication and other flaws in getting their message out.
Reprogram your brain to use the best software (this version of the English Language) to get better results. Write, Speak and Think more clearly. Use E-prime to help you in dealing with depression and to change your mindset.

Even though we do not agree, politically, we must be clear in discussing this word is and make sure that it’s understood that it’s not automatically analogous or metaphorical language. This is not true. But I absolutely love the subject of the prime, and we can all learn much more about using it with clarity. The topic is not true versus false, it’s clarity versus speaking at a general level of non-clarity.

7:53 actually homeboy… AI Wants to be more clear than you were with the word “have“… While the use of "have" is not explicitly prohibited in E-Prime, it is important to use the verb in an active form to ensure that the sentence adheres to the principles of E-Prime. For example, instead of saying "I have a car", you could say "I own a car" or "I possess a car". This usage of active verbs can help to clarify the meaning of the sentence and encourage clearer thinking.

E-prime seems really useful to shift one's way of thinking, but I find it impractical to use it in daily speech, considering that most languages have a strong subject-object relationship, and tend to base themselves on arbitrary delimitations of objects (such as defining "where" an "apple" begins and "where" it ends.) With this thought, I went on to analyze some talks by RAW, and it surprised me that he didn't seem concerned to use it, perhaps because of the point I mentioned above. That said, I think habitually using e-prime may, in the best case, cause a shift in consciousness to reduce some of the cognitive dissonance that arises from seeing solid "essences" in things; and in the worst case, it may help make us more mindful of our speech. By the way, I enjoyed the edit highlighting the times you "broke" the e-prime rules :)
@AugmentedActor
@AugmentedActor 6 ай бұрын
All excellent points. Yeah I don’t think people should use e-prime for everyday conversations. You would sound too strange and would have a difficult time using standard phrases. But practicing it in writing and any time you need to speak clearly and intentionally does help you clarify your position on something and communicate it effectively to other people. So I recommend practicing e-prime when you can and using it selectively as you would any foreign language. RAW used eprime to write a full book but he also talked about other forms of language manipulation like removing any reference to yourself from speech (no I, me, etc). That presented a larger challenge to utilize that in speaking. Trying out these forms of language to demonstrate to yourself how much we take for granted in our language will make you more aware of how someone can manipulate language against you or to sell you something. I find that very useful.

@AugmentedActor
@AugmentedActor 4 жыл бұрын
I suppose so. It does get entirely difficult to use connotation without using “is”-ness. But if one wishes to speak metaphorically, they can abandon the principals of E-Prime to do so. At least they intentionally remain conscious of the language they decide to utilize to make their point. People use E-Prime to discover the buried metaphor within the language. One identified, you can put it to use intentionally. I don’t entirely want to live in a world without metaphor. As an actor and a punster, I rely heavily on is-ness and quite enjoy it. However, I’d love to see it removed from political and scientific conversations as much as possible. But good points!

I’m curious about your word used, Hipnosis. Continually using that word, ironically, is a technique of hypnosis. Is this your word? I’m wondering if any experts discussing and teaching a Prime use that word? Dude, other than the political inclusion, totally loved your video. Thank you. So I asked AI it looks like that is not your word only… E-Prime is sometimes used as a way to avoid hypnotic language, although its primary purpose is to encourage clearer thinking and more precise communication by eliminating the use of the verb "to be" and its various forms. In hypnosis, the use of certain language patterns and structures can be used to influence a person's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. This can include the use of the passive voice, generalizations, and other forms of imprecise language. By eliminating the use of "to be" and other forms of "being" verbs, E-Prime can help to reduce the use of these language patterns and encourage more active and precise communication. However, it is important to note that E-Prime is not a foolproof way to avoid hypnotic language or other forms of manipulation. Effective communication requires more than just the use of specific language patterns and structures, and it is important to be aware of the potential for manipulation in all forms of communication.
@AugmentedActor
@AugmentedActor Жыл бұрын
Seems like the AI answered your question better than I could have. To address the last part, yes anyone could use any language including e-prime to manipulate others. However in using e-prime effectively you would have to include yourself in your statements as an observer. So you would always have more clarity about what you state regardless of correctness, political ideology etc. I should always understand from an e-prime statement who said it and under what circumstances they achieved their statement. Then I can formulate a better understanding of what they whether I agree with it or not. You may not agree with some of the political statements I made but you can still better understand the argument I make and hopefully articulate a better response to those statements. I find it a fun challenge to rewrite news headlines and stories in e-prime to see if they still have the same effect on me. Regardless I like that you found some value in the video and I hope it serves you well in the future.

Rephrase: "Is that your brother?" in e-prime without it sounding ungainly.
@AugmentedActor
@AugmentedActor 2 жыл бұрын
You found a tricky one. You may have to sound a little ungainly to translate this type of question into E-prime. You could ask “how do you define your relationship to that man?” “Do you and John have the same parents?” “Do you have any familial ties to this person?” “Can I refer to that guy as your brother?” Even saying “He IS my brother” proves challenging. But since brother can mean sibling and can mean very close friend or can mean half brother then using prime can help clarify the definition of brother. “That guy and I share birth parents.” “I consider this man as a brother.” But conversationally you might just skip the statement and confirm with another question. Like “oh have I not introduced you to my little brother?” Or “my brother here likes sports too.”

would “appears” really be e-prime since it is a linking verb and essentially a to-be variation?
@AugmentedActor
@AugmentedActor 8 ай бұрын
The s on appears does not mean “to be”. The s is not a contraction of a verb. (By contrast the word “it’s” does have a contraction that shortens “it is”) Similarly run = verb and runs means the same thing. You can still add a “to be” after saying the word appears. “He appears to be sick”. That sentence includes a to be. But saying “he appears sick” does not contain a “to be”. Appears simply means “looks like” or “manifests” or “shows up”. It does not mean “is” or “to be” on its own. The s on words like appear only gets added when you conjugate it into referring to a third party pronoun. “He Appears”. So it really just shows up as a conjugation of the verb not as a contraction of a noun and a verb like “it’s” I appear You appear He, she, they, it appears Past present and future also change how verbs end; He appears now. He appeared in the past. He will appear soon. Same thing for other verbs. He runs. I run. They ran. Basically appears does not include any form of the verb “to be”. (Is, are, were, etc)

Wow, you're both awesome & brave! That will be my last sentence NOT in E Prime. (Please, I read what I wrote before posting, I actually meant it as sincere & not sarcastic) Going right to Hitler, & actually landing, through obvious clarity btw, one of the best Hitler analogy arguments). Impressive argument for why the use of E Prime (totally backwards compatible w regular old English) should get more widely promoted, esp in fields focused on facts & remaining as unambiguous as possible. Sadly, possible motivations for the non-adoption. One of the big theories about the evolution of human language involves lying & deceit. It appears to me like we may have evolved complex language specifically to enable us to deceive others. Who knows? But E Prime sounds to me like a great way to reform English & curb dishonest tendencies that I perceive to have seriously damaging consequences in my & probably all societies. It seems like it would present more challenges for anyone who wants to deceive or obscure without outright lying.
@AugmentedActor
@AugmentedActor 2 жыл бұрын
Great job using E-prime in your response. I agree with your assessment that society will continue to use language that has deceit built into it. It serves a useful purpose for those who wish to gain from other people’s hypnosis and misinformation. That said, by simply understanding and recognizing the hypnosis inherent in the language you can wean oneself off it allowing you to recognize inherent deceit in language before it has a chance to hypnotize. So whereas politicians and religious leaders will continue to use traditional language methods to keep the herd in step, the wiser members of the herd can decode the message and ring the Clarion warning bell or at least recognize when someone uses language against them.

@AugmentedActor
@AugmentedActor 4 жыл бұрын
I first learned of the term reading Robert Anton Wilson’s book “Quantum Psychology” as I mentioned in the video. But your comment prompted me to go try and locate the original source and although it’s tied into the usage of E-Prime, it appears I may have used the term incorrectly in the video. The term “spooks” was first attributed to German philosopher Max Stirner who used the term to describe people’s beliefs in the inherent “is-ness” or “essence” of an object or something society has come to accept as nature but that actually exists only as made up, like property laws, rights, the state, religion, etc. Wilson said this: "the Aristotelian universe assumes an assembly of "things" with "essences" or "spooks" inside them, where the modern scientific universe assumes a network of structural relationships". But to answer your question, search Max Stiner + Spooks and you'll see some sites pop up with more information.

It is so ingrained into common language use to speak this way that I am not at all sure of exactly how to convey what it is that I mean by this, but, "John appears grumpy in the office," still seems to me to be a (not necessarily true) statement about the 'is-ness' of - or even any part of the identity of - John, albeit that it may be seen as COMPARATIVELY less directly any claim about the 'is-ness of John' than the statement (for example) that "John is grumpy". Whatever is - or may be - or may appear to anyone to be (for example) - John's mood, or John's behavior, or John's experience - at any given moment - is not necessarily anything that is inherent to John in anyway. Grumpiness may or may not be being experienced and/or demonstrated, and/or expressed by John, even without it being true that John IS grumpy (or that John = grumpy), and even without its necessarily being true that 'John appears grumpy' (or does so to anyone). It may certainly be more clearly recognized in acting, that the actor may be (or may appear to anyone to be) speaking and behaving AS IF he or she is feeling grumpy, but without the actor - or the character being portrayed by that actor - or both, or neither, necessarily also BEING (or even appearing to anyone to be) grumpy. Unless I have misunderstood this, an intention behind the use of E-Prime is to avoid resorting to the use of even unintentionally presumptive, confused, and misrepresentative language.
@AugmentedActor
@AugmentedActor 3 жыл бұрын
When you say "John is Grumpy" you imply isness and no observer in the statement. When you say "John appears grumpy (to me)" you say less about John and more about how you perceive John in that moment. It becomes a provable statement (at least to you). You could also say, John acted grumpily. If you specify further you can say "I didn't appreciate the tone John used when he spoke to me just now. It made him appear grumpy to me." In other words, you can take the isness out of an adjective by speaking about the situation more specifically and including your perception of the situation in your statement. Then it becomes less foggy in its nature.
@AugmentedActor
@AugmentedActor 3 жыл бұрын
In other words, e-prime forces you to find other ways to express what you really observed and how you might have mischaracterized the situation by describing it as grumpy. I do see your point however.
@AugmentedActor
@AugmentedActor 3 жыл бұрын
Furthermore, we don't necessarily use e-prime to make truthful statements. We use it to make clearer statements that others won't mistake with personal bias while reading them. One can still try to prove or disprove your statement about John's Grumpiness. And you might observe that John appeared grumpy, but John actually felt exhaustion when you clarified with him later one.

@AugmentedActor
@AugmentedActor 4 жыл бұрын
Those situations present some challenges because the present continuous forms of verbs usually require a “be” verb and often an “ing” ending “doing”. Instead of “I’m on my way” you could say “I’ll get there soon”. “I’ll arrive in 10 minutes” “I’ll see you in a little while”. Just substitute a different verb for “am”. “I’m doing homework”: “I need to finish this homework”. “I have homework to do.” It sound weird to say “I do homework now”. But you can say “I need to work on my homework for 10 more minutes or until I finish”. Generally speaking those uses of the verb to be don’t Predicate or describe something so you can use them without sounding metaphorical or unscientific. But a true e-prime die hard will work to find alternate ways of stating those.

The confusion arises especially when the verb "to be" is followed by an adjetive or a noun phrase; e.g. "You are clever, you are an interesting person" There is, imo, no hypnosis when saying "there is," using the continuous tenses ("I was speaking") or the passive tenses ("An email has been sent"). Writing in e-prime seems easier than speaking in it because I believe we have more time to think when writing. I try to speak in e-prime but because I have "to be" quick, I end up cheating. I find speaking in e-prime weird sometimes because I end up having to pause frequently and using words that don't seem to convey what I really mean. E-prime reduces or completely eliminates giving permanent, pervasive and personal attributes to someone, whether they be classified as positive or negative ones: e.g. "You are efficient/stupid," thereby also destroying fixed-mindsets. Some critics of e-prime say that you can convey the same meaning by using alternative structures. "Look! That stupid man has come!" means something similar to "Look! That man who is stupid has come!" As a sidenote, in this message I took a bit longer because of avoiding the "to be" for identity and predication but I only had difficulty with one word: "classified." Here we have an example of a word that doesn't quite fit what I want to express.

I mean if you literally are on the way I don’t see any reason not to say so. Or are in a place or something. In my opinion EPrime mostly serves to induce thought when used with the written word. Trying to speak in EPrime seems like learning a new language.

I agree that the practice of writing in e-prime seems like overkill. However, for people who give speeches to the public, forcing yourself to write and thereby speak in e-prime often serves to make their messages clear and reasoned.

Thank you all for your replies! I really appreciate it!!! All of you brought up very good points, and I feel like I’ve somewhat “seen the light” and the think I may break semi-out of my box and start using E-prime in speech when possible AND advantageous to do so. I see the “no hypnosis” point especially; and yet the opposite seems true more so than the original affirmation E-prime makes! I.e. “the blue pen sat on the big desk while I looked for it” DOES presuppose that the pen IS blue, and WAS sitting on the desk that IS big while I WAS looking for it, so as far as subconscious presuppositions go, the verb “to be” is also the filter our subconscious uses to denote the state of things whether those things are said or not. In fact, the no-brainer answer to “what did he say about a pen” (regarding that last statement) may come out simply as “oh, he was looking for a blue pen that was on the desk” which is very un-E-Prime, though is also extremely natural to say, because we “are” commenting on the state of things a lot.

Noted. I can't change that video now, but background audio levels are something I'll try to keep in mind for future videos. Hopefully you were able to get some information from the video despite the music.

Thanks for the feedback. Each video is a learning experience and sometimes things are a little out of balance and you just have to try and make it better the next time. I've learned a few tricks about balancing music with vocals since I shot this video.

@@AugmentedActor nah, the content is too wonderful to get me totally distracted 😂 this really is such an interesting topic, but not too many people talk about it

Yeah, you’re right it does take a little digging and discovery to find anyone discussing this particular topic. I do find it pretty useful whenever I need to re-think some information someone has told me. If you frame it with this language you get to the meat of what they intend to say.

He wants to be an actor, and he can't pronounce Korzybski.

Haha. Well, in my defense… I intentionally mispronounced his name for the bit. I actually rehearsed that moment a few times. KZfaq humor. And I’ve never encountered Korzybski’s name in a script so far, so moot point. And I don’t want to be an actor. I already am. Or in E-prime I would say “I have acted my whole life and already identify as an actor regardless of how many names I mispronounce.” So there.
