A kiln opening from October 23 which for some reason I overlooked to upload.
My tub of mystery chips has been growing as I've been collecting and recycling from my brush washing water and I felt it was time to use some on these lotion bottles. Loving the blue waterfall cascades!
I've been playing with mystery chips and also lotion bottles, but struggling to get my clay shrinkage right. I've done the calculations but still don't seem to be hitting it quite right when trying to get neck openings to match lotion bottle corks. Any hints or tips would be greatly appreciated.
Am I the only one who finds these chips so fascinating??
Gutted about my little mug for my 3 year old grand-daughter. I didn't realise you cant put transfers over stroke and coat. Sad lesson learnt there :( Only used before directly onto greenware or bisque.
That's the beauty of this pottery adventure though, learning every day and thoroughly enjoying the journey, good and bad . Thanks for all the support guys, it really means a lot.

What gorgeous pieces!!!! I absolutely love the bottles. The “splatter” is from the chips falling off. Ask me how I know. lol. With the corks you have to sacrifice one and use it while you’re throwing and put the cork all the way down into the spout, then when it’s fired it will fit in the middle!! The reason the transfer moved is because stroke n coat glazes move at cone 5-6. They are really stable at low fire. Hope that helps. For the life of me I can’t remember what those drips are called. The last one is my favorite as well. I know you organize your glaze chops by color but have you thought about putting a bunch from each color family together and then putting that on a pot?? I can’t wait to show you what I’ve done with my glaze chips! Hoping to have good enough weather end of this week to fire my kiln. Haven’t fired it since NOVEMBER!!! I’ll show you pics when they are done.

Thanks Michele :) I never thought the splatter was the chips falling ! Duhhh how stupid do I feel now LOL. I tried that with the cork and made it same size as the widest end of the cork and could not get over how much it shrank. Didn't go down half way. Maybe this clay has a much higher shrinkage rate so I need to make much bigger that the widest point? Back to the drawing board for me! That helps explain about the stroke and coat moving at cone 6. Maybe I need to apply only on underglaze if I want a colour under the transfer? I do organise glaze chips by colour and I love your idea about putting a bunch of them together. However these mystery chips are not made from my individually made colour chips, they are all made from my brush washing remnants. I think this is why I am so stunned always at the glorious colours that emerge, when I expect a mucky brown Lol I CAN NOT wait to see what you have done with your chips! Super intrigued! Would absolutely LOVE to see pics when they are fired!!!

@@FarForestCeramics Oh please don’t feel stupid! It’s just what happens. It got to the point that crystals would fall off of a pot and I couldn’t get to it to pick it up so I had to take several things out to get to it but I made a fancy tool to help with that. I’m making a video on it. Lol I’ll message you about it. I can’t believe that doesn’t work with you with the corks. You can call your clay company and ask the shrink rate. I totally forgot these were made with your brush water. Silly me. You sure do use a lot of blue. lol.

Another thought. You can sand the corks down a bit to fit better

Great combos. I've been saving my chips as well. Did you put the transfers on top of stroke and coat. Stroke and coat is a glaze and does move. That is why your transfers smeared

Would love to see what you do with your chips :) I did apply the transfer over the stroke and coat and I fired at cone 6.5. Maybe I need to apply underglaze, and not Stroke and Coat on my next attempt. Usually I apply transfers for earthenware or bisque with no glaze, but I wanted to see some colour underneath. Need to try again LOL

Thankyou so much. That sounds familiar, I've seen people making necklaces from them. So creative! Felt so bad about the little dog cup, it was georgous before firing too :( oh well have to make another one with underglaze instead underneath!

Fun kiln opening! I saw someone on KZfaq who put cordovan over birch, then blue rutile on the rim and it looked like old leather. I tried it and it didn’t look like hers or like yours but I loved the result anyway. I haven’t saved any glaze chips but I’m thinking I should start. Your runs and drips were beautiful!

That's interesting ,but sounds like it would add that extra blue tone which I love. I guess different clay base can also change the results. Thanks for the feedback. Nice to know its not just me that loves lol

Hi, I struggle to get them in the UK . These are the only ones I can find from the US. They are on Amazon, by Creative Hobbies. Just search pump dispenser with cork stopper. 5 for £16. Just seen another company on amazon called Tioncy 10 for £21. Not cheap, but can't find them anywhere else sadly.

Lovely Jeanette! How did you apply the cobalt wash on the top of the birch/cordovan bottle? Love that combo!
@FarForestCeramics
@FarForestCeramics 3 ай бұрын
Hi, I've got quite a few instagram reels which show the application process. Basically after 3 coats of Birch, then 3 coats cordovan I just add one thin line of colbalt wash along the top rim. Doesn't need much at all.

Would it be possible to lightly shave down the corks when they're tight?
@FarForestCeramics

I tried that and sadly the finish on the cork was too rough looking for my liking. They all work well with these corks I'd just prefer some of them went in lower. I just need to master the shrinkage calculation better lol
