Definitely not one of my best openings, actually this could be my worst!
However this is what makes this hobby so rewarding as the odds as a beginner are stacked against you with so many things that can go wrong, and without the training or experience this is the best way to learn.
So many hours, emotions and attention to detail are put in every piece this moment of truth opening that lid really does make my tummy flutter every kiln opening. The pieces that blow you away, literally make you feel like you are on cloud nine, and those failures make you realise how much there is still to learn and you push to do better next time.
The other side of pottery that I never realised at the beginning is that with some 'disasters' there can be solutions or remedies, so all is not lost.
One of my bowls failed on my last kiln opening and thanks to the suggestions on my previous KZfaq from fellow potters I followed their advice and reglazed both dishes so they would still look like a set.
After seeing the results at the end of this video from the 1st firing and then the reglaze firing I now prefer the reglaze firing....just wish I didn't have that blob of frosted lemon ! LOL
The grinding and dremeling of the two mugs tool me over an hour in total, but so relieved that they were able to be resolved, just needed to be patient and take my time.
Really appreciate any advice, tips and suggestions as this is how I learn. I'm now into my 3rd year as a part time hobby potter, with just 6 lessons and the rest taught from You tube so your constructive feedback is SO appreciated and valued.
Thanks as always for joining me on my journey for the highs and the lows,
See you again soon :)

I’m so happy I found you. Your Kiln openings are so fun to watch. And I’m happy that all of us have those good and bad results and that we learn and improve each day from that and from each other 🙏🏻

I love those mystery chip bowls, especially the streaks on the sides. I love the effect. Even with the frosted lemon drip. I love them as is. Don't refire you might ruin the mystery chip design. Thanks for showing how you saved the last 2 mugs. I often have mugs that come out like that. My husband gets so mad as he does the dremmeling.

LOL, I just wish I could remove the frosted lemon drip! It is growing on me though :) Took some grinding to save those two mugs, but the diamond disc on the turntable took the 'grunt work' out of it for me, and got there eventually. Fortunately not had too many need dremmelling, and feel for your hubby :)

I two part glued my diamond disc to a plastic bat and I pour a little water on it as I run it. Works great to smooth the bottoms

So much easier on the wheel. I add water too, but find spraying it with a water sprayer works quite well as can do that more often at the same time as grinding.

Oh wow I love the suspense u build at the beginning! Oh I love the refire and the runs on the side I think it’s pretty looks like bluebirds with wings! I do prefer yr birch base ones tho I must say but still pretty. Nice earthenware pebbles haha u gotta laugh right? Thankyou for showing them I’ve often wondered. So lucky they didn’t stick! I have my kiln opening tonight w all new to me spectrum glazes n I’m so nervous they will have all run so I understand yr fear!! That metallic finish is stunning! Those mystery chips mugs r gorgeous I love them! I’m keeping more chips now lol. Do u sort by tone is that why they r so blue? Which I love! Wow that’s some impressive drippage!! Impressive!! Beautiful combo tho. I love my angle grinder w diamond disc would be perfect for the shelf n last 2 mugs ud have it done in no time. Nice save on the mugs! Great unload xx

Sorry for delay in replying, been away for a couple of weeks. I don't try to add suspense I promise, its just a usual potters mind before opening the kiln isnt it lol. Would love to hear how you got on with your new spectrum glazes, I've not tried any of those yet. I dont sort my chips by tones, and I'm always intrigued why there is o much blue in them, as I use a complete blend of colours. I'm guessing the colours may change as I progress, I just have such a big tub that might be a while! I save all chips automatically! The only thing I do is have 3-4 pots of water to wash my brushes in, and sort them by colour tones (of the colour of the glaze before firing) not sure if that has any impact? May have to go in hubbys garage and see if he has an angle grinder I can use for my shelves.... :) Thanks for the comments and feedback, always appreciated xx

Lovely kiln unloading. Too bad about the two last mugs though, they looked so good. But I think you manages to salvage them really nicely. Had a couple of rather difficult mishaps myself, but the advancer kiln shelves and the diamond core sanding disk has been a life saver in my studio. Can highly recommend those shelves (or similar ones from another brand). :)

Thankyou, was so relieved I managed to salvage better than anticipated. Took ages though! LOL I'd love some advancer kiln shelves but currently considering getting a larger kiln so question is do I wait and get them for the larger kiln? Can't remember if this sanding disc was diamond core or another brand, but I've used it so much. May have to invest in more at different grades! Always so many more things to invest in LOL!

I can’t believe that you only got reallly drippy glaze on low fire pots!!! I’ve accidentally done this and the pot melted into a puddle!! They look so beautiful after you spent all that time grinding them but please know these can be really brittle! I don’t want to be a downer but just be careful with them. Did you use the same glaze combo on them? They all look sooo beautiful!! My favorites are the yellow with the glaze chips. My chips always seem to be yellow too. I feel like I use every color under the rainbow but they always have mostly blue. Love the video and it’s so nice to see you again. ❤

The low fire clay was the brown ovals. All the mugs were in Stoneware. I just glazed too heavy/low down on the green mugs sadly. The brown mugs were a different combination, Manganese wash and then mayco smoke. I'm still enthralled with Chips and they don't lose their interest with me yet. But why is their colour always blue lol

Gorgeous glazing. Now..... your grinding disc which is attached to the square bat, which clicks into the round bat, how is the grinding disc attached to square bat.
@FarForestCeramics
@FarForestCeramics 2 ай бұрын
Hi, I purchased the grinding disc (I believe it was a diamond core one) but it didnt come on a bat, it had an adhesive backing to it - so I chose to add to one of my Hartley & Noble bats so I can use in my 'over the wheel bat system'.

Jeanette---So, you think the odds are stacked against the beginner. Au contraire---if that were true, I'd be home free and NEVER have to say 5 Hail Mary's before I opened the kiln. No matter how long you've been playing with clay, kiln disasters happen! So, grin and bear it. I will say, I have had some of the most incredible re-fire results. Of course, they're one of a kind---but saved! As to the mug sculptures you now have--- mine make it to the dump and I never think of them again. The time required to rehabilitate them isn't worth it. Just look to the next day and not the day before! Keep going. Good luck.

Hi, I added the Manganese wash directly out of the mayco pot, didn't thin down at all. Its a pot called 'Mayco Manganese Wash'. Quite a solid line, but only one coat. then applied the smoke over it.
