How do Dutch people use this device? What is 'gourmet'?
Lekker gourmettten met kerst! Why is it a typical Dutch christmas tradition?
We showed the devide and asked foreigners in the Netherlands to guess:
- how it is used?
- when it is used?
- and why?

The best thing about a gourmet is that it starts when we are quite young. Kids who don't really cook, but have a table of ingredients in which they are fully allowed to only pick the things they want. Generally speaking there is some kind of egg-based mix for omelets. Pancake-mix tends to be there as well, but most skip it. Plenty of meat and veggies. The best part is it takes a little while for the meal to be done and the portions are quite small so you have to make yourself something a couple of times. This way you enjoy the company AND the food. A proper gourmet easily lasts 2-3 hours and with plenty of drinks everyone is ensured a good time. I love it, and yes I'm dutch ^^

And also about being able to mix and match to your own tastes. There can be plenty of choice for everyone, no matter what they do or don't like. I for instance like making small omelettes with veggies in the pans, but don't like small hamburgers much. My brother on the other hand loves the hamburgers but really dislikes the eggs and veggies. The whole popularity thing with gourmetten on Christmas is a rather recent development that exploded over the last 2 decades. From my experience traditional Christmas used to just be an elaborate meal with the family with choices of multiple vegetables, and a choice of different kinds of meat, (Chicken, turkey, rabbit)

iam a bit late to the party but i see no one is explaining what the little pans are for. The are for melting cheese, so you put a flat slice of bread with some cheese (we usually have brie and camembert) on it in the pan and put the pan in the device. Then with a few minutes the cheese will have melted and its delicious! Maybe someone else has other uses for the little pans? The top is for meat, put a bit of oil or salt on it and go. There can be multiple kinds of meat, all cut to smaller pieces to easily fit on the cooking area. The whole thing is basically a combi of gourmetten (top part) and racletten (lower part). Its a very social activity and done typically with family on special holidays.

1 specific day? well it depends on the family really, in my family you use this thing more often actually. Every single family member has one in their house aside from a BBQ. It's actually quite fun to prepare your own pan and cook it yourself. It takes a while to prepare and cook, so you can in the meanwhile talk to others have a drink and just do multiple things at the same time, no one will see it as bad manners if you would be busy with your food while talking to them. When it's all done, you all clean together while talking and having a drink. It's a social thing pretty much.

Goedemorgen allemaal! Ik heb dat nooit gezien in Spanje. Ik wist niet wat het was. 😅 We don't use anything like that. It's common that families (all members or at least adult couples) add money to buy all ingredients for Christmas. Then the host is cooking all evening long for the rest. If the family is cool, then they should help cooking, but it's not the case of all families, so others just go to fill their stomachs. If he used "gourmet" here, many people (specially sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, who usually eat a lot and do nothing) wouldn't be willing to go to Christmas Eve dinner. 🤣😂Cooking for themselves doesn't sound very appealing to many Spaniards. Things like these make me admire and love Dutch culture even more. You're so intelligent and practical! Vrolijk Kerstfeest! 🎄🎅

Okay... The shortened form of this video circulating on Facebook was so frustrating, I actually had to come here to vent a little.... First of all.. A few helpful tips on viral videos.. 1. Tell us WHAT this thing is called.... Within the first 5 seconds of the video.... 2. SHOW it being used at some point in the video! 3. As a person who might have been otherwise interested in Dutch culture, and perhaps even learning a little Dutch at some point once I improve my German to the level I want........ I have zero interest in watching people guess at the usage of a foreign cooking utensil. Like... literally... ZERO. I skipped through the video looking for it being used... or some splash text talking about what it is... But, nothing. So, I turned off the video after learning little more than, "The Dutch have some weird multi-person cooking "thing", that seemed interesting, but........ This might be very entertaining to watch for Nederlanders..... But the name of your channel is... "Learn Dutch". Which means your target audience is not Nederlanders..... It's foreigners. So... If you want to fire the imagination of these foreigners about your culture... SHOW your culture. This was one of the most frustrating videos I have ever encountered on social media. I would have been VERY interested in seeing more about how this device is used, and how it plays a part in Dutch life...... And what I got was a very simplistic video that did not answer any of the questions I had as a foreigner. :-( Hopefully I don't come across as unpleasant... But feedback is an important part of growing social media presence and viral marketinig.

lol then why are you here if you want to learn other stuff?... the vid DOES tell you what its called, and a quick 2 second google search will give you ALL the info you need..... im a Scot living in the Netherlands, did gourmet for christmas this year.... we alternate between a roast dinner and gourmet.....this yer was gourmet's turn... i wanted to show my friends from around the world what it was, and was indeed a 2 second google of the words 'dutch gourmet' and i found an image of them being used.... go cry somewhere else, the vid was good!

@@Uchia0liveira Not really. Most people put something there with a few slices of cheese on top. Baked potato slices, mixed eggs, green beans, mini-hamburgers, piece of bread etc.

Its for every holiday not just Christmas. You best do this in someone else's house because the smell of food stays for 3 days and the fat on the wall stays forever.

Minute 1:40 Im sorry, but this is wrong. Altough most Dutch people dont use it for melting cheese its certainly made for it! Qoute: "A modern way of serving raclette involves an electric table-top grill with small pans, known as coupelles, in which to melt slices of raclette cheese. This new way has been used since the 1950s. Generally the grill is surmounted by a hot plate or griddle. In Switzerland the electrical raclette is called "raclonette". The device is put in the middle of the table. The cheese is brought to the table sliced, accompanied by platters of boiled or steamed potatoes, other vegetables" en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raclette

4:30 that moment when you discover something really dumb actually isn't dumb at all for the host. She clearly has had a few special days wasted because she was just slaving away in the kitchen for other people to get such a face. :')

Hahahaha! Top 3 answers concerning this gourmet device: 1. Because they're stingy! 2. To put in cheese, they love cheese! 3. For Kingsday, no doubt! Foreigners have SUCH an over the top classic mindset when it comes to the Dutch 🤣

I totally get what you are saying, but the irony is, that smaller peaces of meat are done quicker than larger pieces of meat. You can really eat more than you might think, especially if you're at the table for 2+ hours with some drinks :)

Stefan Reichenberger each person has his own little pan to bake meat, fish or basically anything else that can be fried in a little butter. The top is (at my family) used to crisp slices of baguette, pineapple rings, meat if you’re impatient, and perhaps things too big for the pan like things on sticks (sateh). Because the pan is small only a few pieces of meat will cook at the same time, giving you time to chat, enjoy some fish salad, gossip and just enjoy time together.

The woman talking about the small pans being for stingy people is so wrong, haha. Dutch people actually eat a lot on the gourmet and they eat for hours. It's literally the only diner when time isn't an issue at all. Non-Dutch people don't know what they're missing. It's not really for kids, because of the time spent and some Dutch people mock it, but it's actually great. The guy talking about that the host doesn't want to cook, doesn't get the concept at all.
