Shaved 4 seconds off of my time with trailing braking!!! I have been racing for just 2 weeks. Total newbee. (Although 69 years old. Yeah, haven't owned a video game in 40 years. Go figure.) Automobilista 2: Watkins Glen Formula Reiza Moza R9, Moza KS Wheel, and SRP pedals. I crash a lot. But I went from the slowest on the grid to the fastest. Listening to your videos has dramatically improved my times. Just set my best lap time ever! Almost 6 seconds faster than the Ai. Thanks!

Great advice and as I am still new to sim racing (3 weeks short of a year) I have only ever used Auto-Blip but no other aids, simply because I have never driven a manual car in 25 years of driving and with my pedals not being load cell (logitech G29 wheel and pedals) I have started using the clutch pedal as my brake (because brake too stiff) since doing that I have seen my times improve and my ability to trail brake. I still can't trail brake all the time depending on the car and the corner but it is a lot better than before. As for being slower and keeping line while the faster cars lap you, I find that if you communicate to the other drivers and find a good spot to pull over (straights of course) then it is better to pull over so they can stay on the racing line. Almost every drive I have done it to has appreciated it and thanked me simply because they could keep on the faster line (with more grip ) without ruining the entry in the next corner. If I know there is a long line of cars close enough together, I will even slow right down too to I don't go too far down the straight and then ruining the 6th or 7th in line, thus ruining there chance for racing for a higher position. It all comes down to communication with the other drivers, knowing the track and knowing your limits. Everything else I will try to put into practice even though I already do some of it.

Amazing! I'm really keen on iRacing ultimately. In the last period I've improved mostly on my consistency. Still need to improve more and more in certain points, especially on braking and bring up proper speed in the first laps I feel like I have to be more efficient, but I can say that I'm on a better level of speed overall than last year. 6:17 great practice for this is Oulton Park. Ive been racing there in F3 cars and you can be much more aggressive with the throttle out of the hairpin than you can be on the final curve
@FuntimeAG
@FuntimeAG Жыл бұрын
6:19 i realised that myself not long ago. There was that line of downhill hairpins that i was doing wrong going too much outside on entry to get a better trajectory for the exit. What i didn't realise is that the corner has a raised camber on the inside and if you sacrifice entry speed for rotation the result will be much faster. Surprisingly enough handbraking that corner is faster than not doing so. That might be because my car had a very long first gear though. I think this mistake should be higher up on the level of difficulty because its not easy to spot that especially on downhill corners where you'd think it wouldn't matter

Haha Number 34. Unfortunately I’ve had a few toxic drivers go into the back of me, claim I was break checking (when I wasn’t, I was just slower) and blaming me for not moving out of the way (because they don’t know how to overtake? 😂). Fortunately I got promoted to C class and now see less toxic drivers allowing me to finally learn and improve a bit more 😅. I’m also enjoying iRacing a lot more now which is good. I did not enjoy my month in rookie and d class, glad I got to move up to c class before season 1 ended 😄

This is why I prefer racing on ovals in high-downforce cars. They’re less demanding and more about the kind of racing that appeals the most to me: cars running in huge packs, relying on the draft to pass each other, constantly at full throttle all the way around, mere inches separating all these cars, with one wrong move being all it takes to spark disaster.

Any tips for driving the Porsche GT3 R and GT3 Cup in ACC? Also, I changed my practice toward a 2 car 10 min race where I have to follow the lead car and only pass on the last lap. I found this harder than passing as soon as possible then staying in the lead. If I can consistently make the pass then I increase the skill level of the lead car. Thoughts?

I don't think 46 is necessarily something to always follow. Even with a correctly setup DD wheel, some cars, particularly road-based ones, will not necessarily correct the car appropriately through steering forces. Depending on the steering geometry and self-aligning torque of the tire you might for example not get any countersteer correction from the car in some combined input situations. Racecars tend to have less phase errors than roadcars and it is not a guarantee that the SAT is well simulated in whatever sim you're playing, but it's something to keep in mind if it seems like FFB is incongruent with what the car needs.
@SuellioAlmeida
@SuellioAlmeida Жыл бұрын
True, especially road cars with power steering. In this case I was using a lot more active countersteering instead of waiting for the wheel to do it for me. But in cars where the SAT is good you should definitely use it
@ArchOfficial
@ArchOfficial Жыл бұрын
@@SuellioAlmeida Powersteering throws a wrench in the mix; a lot of racecars clip to maximum torque with like 1 degree of steering, while others have a much smaller difference between assisted and unassisted torques than roadcars do, like some GT3 cars have allegedly. Generally though powersteering is compression, so I would expect powersteered cars to require LESS active countersteering, and unassisted cars with reasonable geometries to require more. The outlier IMO is some road-based cars with steering geometries that cause SAT to be very impactful and highly boosted powersteering systems, which can lead to a total lack of countersteering tire forces in some situations, or even a reversal of torque. However these are rare especially in the modern era, it was more a symptom of old, manual steered cars that got powersteering added after. Only highly modded AC has powersteering in any consumer sim that I know of (and there are only two people who have even released a car with powersteering, me being one of them) so it's not really a true factor for 99.9% of users at this point in time. However when DDs get more common and real-world steering torques are more achievable by a larger part of the community (You only need about 5Nm for powersteered roadcars and 7-8Nm for GT cars) then I can totally see real powersteering being added to more sims in the future. I haven't confirmed it but to me it feels like ACC might have some kind of range compression in the FFB emulating powersteering, though. The ramp is quite high and SAT is not very impactful.

My problem is that my ideal fov is 28 and i cannot change the configuration of the room or my gf will just put an end to my life. At 28 i can't see the apex when i'm at the corner entry, i'm used to look as far as possible so i cant drive at all. i put at least 50 degrees usually. Is that wrong? I mean, there must be a minimum

do you have any "how to setup a car" videos? i have 15+ years sim racing (stopped counting at 15) and have driven to the moon and back in millage, so this isn't about "git gud". my strat used to be "download someone's leaderboard car, and tweak it so it's actually balanced properly". i set a global #1 time this way, and many top 10s and stuff (the #1 spot is just about putting in the time, ain't nobody got time for dat!). but games like iRacing hide the lack of skill in the community though hiding their information on setups. i have seen countless videos on tuning, and even built an app for my phone to do math for setups.. *_i can recognize a perfect setup,_* but i just can't understand how to get a perfect setup without *_"try every single setting until it works"._* i know the obvious stuff like tweaking roll bars and alignment (and of course what every setting does). furthermore, i can guess at the procedure.. i'd do aero early, and springs, but how do i know the relation between things such as(but not limited to) damping and the rollbars? for example i know that i can do things like adjust the rate at which my car will roll with the damping. and how do i find the values for these settings, and for my preferences, such as(but not limited to) aero? the procedure can't simply be "try every single setting on wings until fastest time" because that is probably 1200 laps. and everything affects everything ELSE! i have INTUITIONS on the correct thing to do, but i cannot create a procedure for myself to guarantee a perfect competitive setup without "try every single thing, until it's at it's best". what settings are "SPEED"? i can use intuition and luck if i need to maybe, to make it FEEL good.. *_but how do i tune optimal competitiveness into a setup reliably?!_* i feel like this is "hopeless cause" typing all this, but you seem pretty knowledgeable from most of the videos i've seen you post. this is the only real weakness in my racing and it's worth the time to type this for a chance you can help me at all.
@ArchOfficial
@ArchOfficial Жыл бұрын
Read "Race Car Vehicle Dynamics", "Suspension Geometry and Computation" and "The Shock Absorber Handbook". Get used to looking at telemetry and correlating that to needed setup changes. In other words, you need to actually know what every setting does; chances are you don't. Unfortunately most sims lock the parameters behind encryption and sometimes don't indicate the units in the setup screen such as ACC's ARBs nor do you usually have access to damper curves so it's a bit harder than IRL sometimes.
@AVERYhornyMrDinosaur
@AVERYhornyMrDinosaur Жыл бұрын
@@ArchOfficial i know what every setting does, but what i don't intuitively know is what they do in relation to other adjustments and i don't know how to specifically identify the finer things that make faster lap times, or better feel, other than 10,000 laps and trying everything. a good example is controlling the rate of roll with rebound. so the rollbars are set correctly, yet they might roll too fast or slow. that's one of the finer adjustments i am aware of. obviously i could ham together a fast enough car, that feels good enough. but i am on a quest for butter. i am on a mission to a full understanding. but i liked your comment for the references. i can't afford those books, but maybe i can find free ones online.. if you have any RARE "terms" your aware of to help me find a more in depth tuning world, rather than the "how to adjust roll bars" noob stuff, then let me know. i am nearly desperate to be able to intuitively setup a buttery car.. rather than only being able to recognize one, or make one behave "good enough". i am on a quest for the butter.
@ArchOfficial
@ArchOfficial Жыл бұрын
@@AVERYhornyMrDinosaur Then you don't actually understand. Sail the seas a bit and get to reading. Although a lot of the real knowledge out there is gained via discussion. At the risk of spreading misinformation, I think it's not useful to try to control roll rate in modern aero racecars. You should be more interested in contact patch load variation across the axle and min/avg/max ride height. The roll stiffness is likely to be so stiff in relation to heave stiffness that the car will roll quite quickly no matter the settings. Maybe more useful to focus on heave behavior when going onto and coming off brakes.

If your goal is to improve and you have no physical handicap, you will need to turn them off eventually to be more consistent and faster. It's really hard to change your muscle memory once you've practiced with assists. And it's also completely okay to be slow at first without assists. If you can't control you car, just go slower and smoother. It's not like you need to win races immediately no matter the cost. Arcade games already exist.
