For this in depth 500HP BMW 335i review you might have heard the phrase that the N54 BMW engine is the Modern 2JZ. In many ways that is correct - the only one being it's not as simple as a 2JZ. It's more advanced than the popular E46 M3 in almost every way but still has a few limitations. With so many competitors like the Mercedes C class, or even the Taurus SHO, it was a lot to live up too. Other than that this nearly silent but deadly n54 twin turbo inline six is vicious down the street without disturbing anybody. Cameron has had this car for awhile now and wanted to share it with all of you. Thanks for watching!

O!Technology I wouldn’t exactly say it’s underrated. They’re very popular and the N54/55’s capabilities are widely known. I’d say the most underrated non m car are the newer 650is. Tune and downpipe and you’re putting busses on a lot of brand new sports cars/super cars

As a 335i N54 owner who nodded his car I can say it's a great car, awesome engine, and good transmission. Unfortunately the oil filter housing gasket, vacuum lines, and water pump are extremely unreliable.

As someone who owns 2 of these (sedan and a coupe) I can confirm that these are indeed weak spots however replacing all 3 will only set you back about $300 plus maybe 3.5 hours of labor that basically anyone can do themselves with pretty basic tools. The bigger thing to worry about is if you're running earlier revision injectors, an old HPFP or the MSD80 ECU with stock mosfets. Index 12 injectors will set you back a small fortune, an MSD81 and CAS combo are about $1k and upgrading the mosfets on MSD80 takes forever unless you own a hot air rework station. That said once you get them sorted the N54 screams...Ideal setup would be an N54 335i with the suspension and dif out of an e92 m3.

cram6891 I’d recommend a 335i to anyone. I had a E39 540i for 4 years before I bought my e90 335i last year. Coming from a V8 and now having turbos I’m not complaining. The power is always there and the aftermarket support is endless from charge pipes, inter coolers, turbo’s, tunes interior, exterior mods plus the $ per Horsepower ratio is really good you can easily get the car up to the 400hp 400tq range for less than $1000 just make sure you buy a n54 335i that has a stock oil cooler usually found in cars with the sport spec cause the oil tends to get a little hot in the base model 335i’s. Also a common leak to look for is the Oil filter housing gasket it’s known to leak on the n54 engines and it can be seen on the front right side of the engine when looking into the bay. In the end the car is totally with it and the market has dropped for them lately F.YI.

I bought a 2007 e90 335i off of copart with mechanical issues for $1600. Brought it home and cleaned up the bad carbon buildup it had that caused all the issues. Replaced the valve cover gaskets. And put a tune on it and I’ve been daily driving it with around 350whp daily and it has been nothing but amazing. I love these cars. So much potential and such an amazing build quality.

yeah but that's like saying "oh a shark is dangerous but out of these goldfish, this one is pretty aggressive". germans don't care about building engines with potential anymore, they are about saving material and effort. americans build V8s. japanese brands are moving into the luxury/GT category away from performance.... so I don't see any competition. N54 > 2JZ imo because JZs are overhyped and became to expensive.

I drive both a W204 C63 Edition 507 and a E92 335i with the N54. I’ve put a DCI and and the MHD tune on the 335i, and it really does make a huge difference. Off the line i’m sure the C63 would smother it, but from around 40-80 they feel more or less the same. Great car, although i’m considering either an LCI E92 to replace it, or another 335i in a more desirable spec

I rode in a 335i coupe at Fuji Speedway with a VVTI 2J swap. It was pretty dope. Personally I like the sedan better than the coupe but that’s just me

David thanks for reviewing this car. I have the E93 in a 2007 model in Monaco blue. It’s all stock with 55k miles. I had to laugh at your “stock bmw shifter is like driving a truck” comment, because umm it’s not. I have a 1994 Z71 with a NV4500 transmission (found in the 3/4 and one tons) if you really wanna test the theory of a truck shifter. Back to the stock 335i shifter, yes it needs fine tuning, but it’s certainly no truck shifter. In regards to my truck, I had to upgrade to this transmission because I killed three, yes 3, halfton NV3500 transmissions. I can email you more information if you’re interested. Enough jabbering, so keep the rubber side down and do your thing.

I had one for about 18 months, loved the engine and handling, hated the computer that nags constantly. I read all I could get my hands on plus KZfaq. It was an odd car for BMW as they were still selling the previous M3 (E46) until the V8 arrived about 2 years later. The 335i was the same (if not more) BHP than the E46 so they left off the LSD and advertised the power as 306 BHP so they could sell the old M3s. I met two E46 M3 owners who were amazed how quick my E92 335i was.

Great review! Love your enthusiasm. I have a E92 335i and I totally feel you on the LSD. I think BMW after the E36 generation hasn’t put an LSD in any non-M car. Unfortunately, their thought process is that if you put an LSD in a 335i, it would be a too closely competitive to the M3

The only thing holding these engines back is the fact that no one makes cams for them so you are stuck with that 7k rev limit even on a big turbo. I do still love them though!

I had one of these, I loved it with a simple tune its amazingly quick and a great daily driver. But man reliability was an issue turned me off from BMWs completely! Ive always wanted a BMW until I owned one. Even under warranty it's annoying. And you are right the open diff is the weak point.

I had a 2007 335i Coupe...it had turbo lag. The engine would go into "safe mode" at random as well. The dealership replaced the turbos and all but in the end I sold it.

David Hans I've also had the safe mode issue randomly. Not very frequent but annoying. It's very hard to go back to bmw when a whole bunch of other cars even when slightly tuned are a lot more reliable especially nowadays. Idk now I understand why some companies don't go all with tech unless it's 100% reliable then they put it out , i.e. (Honda ,Toyota.) It was a great engine when it wouldn't give u issues .

Ouch, guess it all depends on year and model then, my 06 530i has 200k with no major issues and Me and my buddy work on it ourselves. I've had many great bimmers but are aware that there are many modern bimmers with too many problems sadly. Of you want a good bimmer get an e39 or e34 5 series for a good daily.

You would expect a Toyota to be more reliable but my old 2001 avensis 1.8 vvti just ate 1L of oil every 200km. I currently own a 2004 525i and it's more reliable than the toyota. It all depends on how you treat and maintain your car and ofcourse what kind of car. A 335i will have more issues than my N/A 525i.

Naw, E50. I can't afford a shotgun or port injection right now. I'm just stage 2 on my LPFP, one walbro 450. Stock turbos so it's done above 6000 rpm. High 11's @ 120mph on all season radials. Approx 500+ engine hp, 440+ whp with 550 ft/lbs measured at the wheels. MHD tuner, Wedge Performance tune and xHP stage 3 (automatic). Stock turbo outlets. VRSF 5" intercooler, VRSF cold side silicone inlets, DCI, stock dump valves. Over 140,000 miles with a terrible wastegate rattle. Outran a Hellcat Challenger on the street, he was not happy. The stock high pressure fuel pump will need help to get full use of E85.
@e85johnson68
@e85johnson68 5 жыл бұрын
Scott Gaines Interesting, I'll have to take a look a custom tune for sure, just running stage 2+ mhd right now, almost fbo, just need inlets. It's lacking power without the e85. What's you opinion on the mhd e85 maps? I've been afraid to try em... Lol the reason I was thinking of going back to the jb4 was for the safety net of the auto tune map5 for e85 in case something starts to fail.
