Crazy About Fly Fishing

Күн бұрын

I spent the day Euro Nymphing Big Rivers during high water after a load of rain the previous few days. Barrie decided to swing streamers so I ended up with his Traper GST euro nymphing rod to fish a couple of big rivers for rainbow and brown trout. The high water levels and extra color in the rivers proved a challenge but I did managed to landed a few good rainbow trout.

It's probing to be a very effective method and the better I get at it the harder it's becoming to pick up the indicator setup. Still prefer dry dropper though.

Great video! I find that when the water is a bit (just a bit) off color it can be great fishing. Thanks!

I agree, very often the case. Unfortunately this time it made crossing impossible which limited our access. But I think we could have had a great day if we could have accessed more water on the first river

Next time try fishing big double articulated streamers.. it’s one thing I’m going to try a lot of this winter on the big sea run trout here in the South!

I'm yet to catch a fish on a big streamer but I will keep trying. I throw one around every now and then. I seem to only catch fish with small woolly buggers

It's a very effective way to fish and I am slowly getting better at it. Learned some new stuff the last trip from a Spanish friend which I will be sharing soon. Thanks for watching

Thanks for posting this enjoyable video. Funny you mentioned the Double Davey Knot. I learned about it from Trippin on Trout and have been practicing tying that knot the last couple of days. Regarding fishing in dirty water, last year I found a fly that did extremely well in one of our rivers in Colorado during similar conditions. This fly looks NOTHING like any natural. I'd be curious if it also works in NZ. I used the yellow version of this fly, which is super easy to tie. The KZfaq video below is by a famous ( at least in the US ) Euro nymphing professional, George Daniel. The Mop Fly [ about 9:34 into the KZfaq Video ] Tying "Junk" Flies for High Water Conditions: Three Simple Nymph Patterns - by George Daniel kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rNGJmpiWuNmnpZs.html Two other guys who are part of the US Fly Fishing team that you may be familiar with are Lance Egan and Devin Olsen. These guys can teach you a ton about Euro nymphing. They also have quite a few fly tying videos which you may find interesting. I've used several of their flies in Montana and did very well on them.

Thanks, I also first saw the double davy on Trippin on Trout. Been a great knot and getting better at tying it now. I have heard of the mop fly but not used it yet. I will tie up. I hear squirmy worms are great too so will give that a go as well. I bought Devin and Lance's modern nymphing video and will probably get the followup one soon. Great content. Thanks for watching and commenting.

@@CrazyAboutFlyFishing squirmy wormy is definitely worth trying I've had some really success with it in coloured water in the waikato streams and at taupo. I've tried the mop quite a bit but only had it work well on one day on the hinemaiaia when it was quite dirty

@@theheronknowsprimewater1035 I have the material, just need to tie them up. Good to know they work well in the Waikato too.

Disclaimer: I'm not an expert I've been euro nymphing for about 2 years and have put a fair amount of time into it. I don't really think it's possible to tell the difference between the bottom and fish. I've read quite a few places that you don't actually want the flies ticking on the bottom the whole time and I've found strike detection is a lot easier when I have just enough weight to get to the slower water near the bottom. You can often see the drift slow down when the flies get down below the fast surface currents.

also work on smoothing everything out so your not jiggling the sighter so much (although that is a technique to try sometimes)

Thanks, that makes sense, I certainly have trouble telling unless the fish take very aggressively. Will play around with with weight a bit more.

Yeah I still need a lot of practice. Should sort itself out with time hopefully
