Another very enjoyable video Roger, and addressing a choice I'm stuck between on a regular basis, particularly for street type photography. I prefer primes but have taken to introducing short zooms into my work during 2022, and it does solve the problem, but never feels right, it's hard to get away from those nice primes ! Anyway thanks for all you do, and all the very best for the New Year, cheers - Stig.

Such a pleasure to watch, your statement at about 7:40 pretty much sums up why ppl shoot film. Also learnt a lot about 28mm vs 50mm. My pentax slr has a 50mm while my konica lexio is 28mm and I always wondered how and why they're different. Will definitely use your advice next time I am out and about!

Nice Shots Roger.. I like both the 28 and the 50mm. I notice you fill the frame to the left or right with anything you can find. Good bit of inspiration to go out and shoot…wait a minute..it’s raining again😂😂

In an urban enviroment you could do the same composition challenge when you have harsh direct light. Then use the light / shadow to seperate fore / background elements. Interesting idea.

I do both digital and make my own prints, been darkroom printing since the 70's, did a lot of colour then and some black & white, but now B/W rules as I have the time now I am retired in my converted bedroom as my darkroom.. Great video as usual Roger.

I like this. A bunch of good looking photos. The 50mm images look more pleasing to my eyes but it depends on the subject what focal length works best. 40mm is my favourite all around focal length.

I like the fact that you enjoy yourself taking photos. On other videos there is a overly "formal" sense of the significance of photography and they forget that best photos are those that people enjoy taking. Your videos always extrude a sense of joy. Personally I'm more a 50mm shooter than 28m. To be honest more and more these days a 35mm is most often on my camera. Nevertheless between 28 and 50, I prefer the 50mm as it reflects more how I see. The 28mm is too wide for me. Loved your shots as they were good examples.

Nice video! To the initial question, get the 35! Honestly I like all three, but 35 is often the choise, I mostly bring just one camera and one prime lens. You're right, it's important to enjoy what you're doing, it shows of in the work. Happy new year, Roger!

Just picked up a 28mm for my Olympus OM-1, which my Dad bought new. Can't wait to get out there with it! I used it all through university in the '80s, but with a sub-par zoom lens, so I was never satisfied with the results. I've always felt cramped with the 50 (and the 80 on my MF cameras, and the 150 on 5x4!) so I think I'm more a wide-angle guy.

The 50mm and 28mm are very popular focal lengths on full-frame cameras. I often use a 50mm f/1.4 and 28mm f/2 combo. However, I preferred a 50mm f/1.4 and 24mm f/2 combo. When shooting landscapes and nature, I prefer a 55mm f/3.5 macro and 28mm f/2.8 combo. For vacation/travel, on my Contax G1 rangefinder, I used a 45mm f/2 with a 28mm f/2.8.

Interesting project many time I had the same conversation with myself the 28 does give you a different perspective I like it as I do the 24 for bending the lines a little the 50 is like my eye what I see I shoot thing I end up taking both lol 😂

In dense urban surroundings like Hong Kong the 28mm is perfect. My first camera ( Nikkormat FT2 ) came with the 50mm f2 which was perfect for my life then - girls, cars and motor bikes. Now my favourite combination now is an Olympus EM5 with a lumix 14mm f2.5. Full circle.

I'm going through this dilemna right now. I have a Pentax 6x7, with a 55mm (about 28mm) and a 105 (about 50mm). I have pretty much shot 50 my whole life and I find it hard to adjust to the 28mm. I like the precision and control 50mm gives to compose and cut things out. I often feel like i can't control the 50mm at all, there are a lot of things in frame and i can't make visual sense of it. Then again even with the 50mm, I feel like I need to relax and add a bit of chaos or happy circumstance in my photos. It often feels like if i take the 55mm, I wish I had the 104. And if I take the 104 I wish I had the 55.

Great video, though I suspect that some of the passers-by were wondering what that creepy guy with a camera hanging about behind the beach huts was up to? More seriously, after using just a 50mm for a long time, I always now have a 24/28mm and 50mm with me, so really enjoyed the comparisons.

Just my opinion but the “have something interesting in the foreground of a wide angle shot approach” didn’t seem to work as well with the 50mm. With the 50mm an unfocused foreground just seem like a distraction. Thanks for braving the cold for this illustration. It’s all good!

You know you're getting on a bit when you ask yourself several times a day 'Do I need to go to the toilet ?' Then you get to the age when you're not sure if you're going to the toilet. Then you get to the age where you don't care if you're going to the toilet. At this point your manager usually brings you in and asks you if you've considered retirement 😊 I have to query though, how does the 50mm lens 'bring the background in a bit ?' All I see is a narrower field of view.

For my taste 28mm is too wide.I prefer 35mm all day all night. When there are only few people I prepher 50mm,because I wand to avoid to go too close.I prefer for portraits 35mm and 50mm.I shoot with 28mm in crowded places and sometimes indoor.I prefer film than digital. For me there is no comparison because with film you create a physical product who can hold in your hands and live forever.I always print my photos.I don’t know anybody who print digital photos. These photos are fake photos, air, who lives in hard drives and you can see only in a monitor and also you will loose them for ever, soon or later.
