Yes, sea strainers do crack and can break. I had one crack (Perko) on my 1988 48' Californian CPMY about 9 months ago. I was lucky that my bilge pump was able to keep up with inflow of water. I replaced both (port and starboard) plastic cylinders, and rebuilt them with new gaskets. I now keep the sea cocks CLOSED at the dock. I also keep the keys next to the strainers, so I cannot start the engine without opening the sea cocks.

You beat me to it. This is a good lesson to learn if you dont already know it.

Can I assume that the strainer did not break on its own? Did a person do it accidentally, or maybe rough seas caused something to fall on it?
@CaptainRetriever7 ай бұрын
Could have been a hairline crack in it from using a pipe wrench or kicked it, a defect, or just overtightened. Plastic also gets brittle over time.

Is that considered a salvage? Or is it just an assist?
@CaptainRetriever7 ай бұрын
Anything that requires special equipment we consider a salvage. It’s outside the realm of normal towing.. although some of these are considered wreck removal.

Yap the old step on the sea cock cover and opps......totaled...the cabin looks rather empty almost like it was stripped of items in anticipation of the grand sinking

They’ll need to drain all the oil and water out of the engines and fill them with diesel fuel, replace the alternators and probably have to swap all the batteries but it will probably run again. Will be chasing electrical gremlins for a while from corrosion.
@CaptainRetriever7 ай бұрын
They're both on track, engine & water is the easy part, the wiring is your main issue saltwater gets inside the wires, and causes corrosion you won't start seeing the issues for about 6 months..
