Nick knew his personal 528 Hemi would make some great numbers. But the results he got during these tests defy explanation. How is this even possible?

What is the bore and stroke? Is it a 1 inch stroke increase?
@wedge4hire
@wedge4hire Жыл бұрын
@@robertnaumann7802 I'm not sure, I thought they utilize the 4.15" stroker crank from Mopar, but don't hold me to that. And that would be a .400" (nearly a half inch) stroke increase from the stock 3.75 inches.

@@robertnaumann7802 I believe when you drop that 4.15 inch crank in a 440 (4.320" bore) you go up to 505 cubes (with +.030" overbore).

@@robertnaumann7802 Good work, my friend! Remembering of course, the bore of the 426 Hemi is smaller (4.250") than the bore size on the 440 wedge (4.320"). I did it the easy way: Mopar Performance 528 Hemi utilizes the 4.15" stroker crank but has a bore size of a full 4.5 inches! I'm sure Nick's setup is similar.

The factories could design some very good manifolds. I remember reading an Pontiac 455 exhaust manifold vs header test years ago, and the engine only lost a few horsepower and torque at 5200 rpm. They said they almost fell over at the results.

Ford designed free flowing manifolds for its 427 engines. They were recommend over headers too. With probably the same results. Almost no hp loss, but a bit of a torque loss. So you see, the factories didn't always get it wrong.

I was thinking that Nick was keeping the engine at over 2000RPM at idle. Then he brought it down to 1600 (which I thought was lower limit..) THEN he brought it down to 1000 WITH Vacuum! the thick cast iron of the manifolds holds in the heat of the exhaust gasses in the passages, so even though long tube large Dia. headers made slightly more torque, headers radiate more heat away from the pipes, cast iron manifolds keep more heat in the pipes and THAT increases velocity, resulting in more power. If the headers were smaller Dia. or smaller collectors etc they would probably make less power than the cast iron factory manifolds, which are essentially cast iron headers anyway. Awesome test!

We at home are right there with him as he works to figure out what is going wrong. For instance, just the last engine he had on the dyno, the max wedge, they had distributor problems and he was trying to figure out was going wrong. Other shows on KZfaq, they shut off the camera every time they run into a problem. All of us guys know it ain't as simple as some others show it to be. My congrats to Nick for letting us in the dyno room with him.

Most manufactures had special manifolds for high performance. On a street car that is driven they make a lot of sense. Loose bolts, rust, exhaust gasket leaks are nonexistent. Our 1972 Pontiac T/A has manifolds we had ceramic coated. We think it is the best long-term solution. Plus, ground clearance is not an issue either.

Id love to hear your opinion on the Black ghost, such a rare and unique dodge 426 challanger.

Six hundred horsepower naturally aspirated, that sure is something to behold. The trick is putting all that horsepower to the ground though. It's going to take some hook that's for sure. Either way though it'll be a tire prover. Thank you so much for sharing, love hanging out in your Dyno room.

Big block mopars had the best factory exh. manifolds in the industry . I had a 69 383 road engine , I put headers on it and it didn't make a pinch of difference - biggest mistake I made , plus they were hard on starters , the heat baked them !

@General Lao I had Edelbrok DP alum intake with 800 Holley DP'er , Racer Brown cam , 12.5 pistons , Accel dp dist. & coil , elect fuel pump , Dana 60 rear end with 4.10 gears ., as I said the mopar hi perf. cast iron exh manifolds were nearly as good as headers , as for gas mileage it wasn't a concern with the 4.10 rear gears , 12 mpg on the highway at 60 mph - 😮‍💨
