You hit on something I've had amazingly frustrating for me. When I run into bobbling, I tend to slow down to try to reduce it and then go back to try and straighten them out. The result for me is the line is fatter than I want and I still have bobbles. Going faster was counter intuitive. Thanks for that.

I try to avoid quarter sawn and even rift sawn material when I can because of that chattering effect when carving perpendicular to the grain. Also, the bit tries to follow the path of least resistance, so it's very difficult to hold a straight line when following the grain as well. I try to use plain sawn material whenever possible because I find it's easier to carve.

I'm brand new to this but figured you could also clamp a straight edge to the material where the baseplate could ride along it as a guide. Dudes that make sense? I'm thinking of using that type of method to put a juice groove in a cutting board but since I'm a newbie, wanted to make sure there's not something I'm not thinking through with that idea. Thank you!

Eric good vid. I'm completely new to this at 51 yrs old, but I am in the process of making a DnD gaming table. I will use the router to round off edges, but am thinking of making inlays of a dragon/dwarf/elf/wizard on the table top corners just because it would look really cool. My thoughts were to splay glue some paper printouts and outline the shape on the paper with the router. Exact movement won't be entirely necessary since there are natural curves in such art. I think size of my router bit will be more important. I plan to fill that space with something like epoxy or gold leaf or metal wire or wood filler. I'll be staining the table top plywood with a dark color like dark walnut or ebony and then use the contrast of wood filler-thinking of mixing wood filler with gold leaf to give it a sparkly design. Would this work theoretically? Is there a pointed router bit? or a 1/32 router bit? I want the lines to be super small. After filler is put in-I'll sand it down to natural color then finish with poly.
@oldave100
@oldave100 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you David. Absolutely your ideas are doable. You are very correct that the right router bits are super important. Another informative video Eric. Here is another thought on using pallet wood, scraps pieces from a "dump site". You have no idea what CHEMICALS/TOXINS may have been spilled onto the wood or the wood dipped in to! Even if you wear a dust mask who wants to take the chance of breathing that in from the "carving dust" produced while routing? For me, the same goes for me concerning carving on pressure-treated wood! Do you know who/what company did the pressure treatment? What process/ chemicals were used? Again for me, it is not worth carving and taking the risk. Just a few things for you and the sign carving community to think about.

Made my first sign Dave! (see my latest video) Thanks for the tips! Gonna make a base like yours and I even have the little LED lights like yours to put on it. Did you glue that on the inside edge? Seeing what I was doing was my biggest issue because of the chips flying and low light. Is it worth rigging up my vacuum to suck the chips or will that get in the way and be annoying?

@@oldave100 I decided to get the 1 3/4 hp router because the Canadian stores that carry the rockler circle jig only have the larger jig, not the small one for the compact router. I hope I will be able to do some carving with this larger router. I am going to order one of your bases to make handling it easier and I'll look at your specialty bits. for circle cuts I'm just going to get a basic cutter. for cutting thin plywood is it better to use a straight or spiral and is 1/8 " bit better or is 1/4" ok? I will be cutting ovals and circles from thin plywood and up to 3/4" mdf. as for carving I plan to work on small live edge wood pieces. The live edge piece I have now that I want to start on is about 1/2 inch cherry wood.
