We're building a monster big block, and it's gonna be force fed with a huge turbo! It's finally time to start out engine build for the UglyTruck, a 2000 Silverado that's being slowly transformed into a race truck. Currently, its running a 8.1 liter Gen VII junkyard big block, but we're building a bulletproof big block to replace it.
Check out my 4.8 LS Budget Boost engine build we did last fall!

LT, as an engineer I can tell you the extreme level of detail you paid to the dimensioning and tolerances to get your bearing clearances perfect and verified will save you more than the cost of the micrometer and caliper. With the level of horsepower your running, you can’t afford not to.
@Saltygarage
@Saltygarage Жыл бұрын
This is why engineers are not mechanics. Unless your reving this thing over 7500rpm that was completely unnecessary the plasti-guage would have given you a correct reading. If you noticed he didn't do the torque sequence properly I bet that's why the plastiguage reading was incorrect. Lots of confidence makes it look like correct information, nice 👍checking the rod bearings with a bore guage was just hilarious 😂
@glennanderson4440
@glennanderson4440 Жыл бұрын
Good enough for an informational video. The mockup and clearance measurements were done by the machinist in order to select his bearings anyways. I only see a high speed torqueing sequence instead of a 3 level inside/outside bolt pattern so its hard to know if this was for real or a victim of editing, no clearances on the white board for info either. I don't think anyone can tell if his plastigauge technique was really at fault. For the rod bolts - torqueing rod bolts is not wrong - thousands of engines are built like that, but I was a little surprised that he didn't use the stretch method.... another cool tool could have been shown!
@Saltygarage
@Saltygarage Жыл бұрын
@@glennanderson4440 mains and rod bolts are two different bearings good sir, I never said anything about a tutorial of the sequence, if you dont torque the crank down in sequence that will mess up your crush for the plasti-guage. I do this for a living, please stop confidently sharing misinformation.

@@Saltygarage is that why engine manufacturers don’t use plasti-gauge in their assembly process? Hell a micrometer and a pair of calipers are as crude as a yardstick compared to what the people who make these engines use.. But what do I know, I just one of those engineers that will never be a mechanic.. That has a decade of experience with an engine manufacturer.

It's not OCD to check clearances on expensive block,crank,rods,mains etc,its smart. Much cheaper to catch any problems early than eat a bunch of high dollar parts up. I commend you on the block cleaning,most people miss this important thing! When using a micrometer, let the tools acclimate to the shop temps,and when holding it don't wrap your hand around the frame of the mic,the heat from you hand alone can change the readings you get. When you check everything,you know its right in your mind and gives confidence in what you build. Excellent build and appreciate how many details you give on this build.

For the engine color, consider having a metallic. If you want a bright color, yellow goes well with black, or a super-bright blue, or maybe even the iridescent pearl white. Of those 3, that's the one that would pop but still be understated. I'd top 'em off with satin black valve covers with the pearl white for any raised lettering or edges, or go white for the body and black for the raised. No matter what you choose to do, it's gonna rock!

This brings me back to my teen and young adult years. I spent them with my grandparents on mom's side. Gramps is an old school mechanic so I learned all the old school tricks. I can remember building many engines with him and using tools like these for bearing clearances. We also used plastigauge but as you experienced it was not always accurate. Thankfully we were doing stock style rebuilds of old Ford engines (mostly the FE class) so clearances being off by .001 did not matter in most cases. Need a distributor and carburetor equipped engine tuned? I can do it by ear. Once you adjust a distributor and carb jets enough you learn what sounds are good and bad.

If I remember correctly, you haven’t been spinning the 8.1 engine very high. The 535 should make power to well above 6000, I would think, which should mean an easy 700 hp NA at sea level. That and 15-20 psi of boost puts you at 1500 hp, just as you’ve planned. Just wondering if that changes your gearing at all. If you’re running a 28” tire, that’s about 720 revolutions per mile. At 6000 rpm I think third gear (1:1) should give you about 146 mph, a little low for 8s. Your shortblock could turn faster though…

I would like to see .0025-.0028 on the mains. I like to run the ford Windsors around .003” on the mains and. .0026-.0028” on the rods. Loose is better than tight for racing. Also don’t forget to check the connecting rod clearance on the small end bushing and the wrist pin. You want .0008-.0012”

I like how you brake from tradition and not do the LS, so when painting the engine don’t go with everyone else with black and or orange… Pick something no one would expect. Gun metal, bronze… put some study time into it and see what and how creative you can be. Give your gen7 a reason to be, an LT7 theme. I wish you were close by, I have a 2012 Sierra with 50k miles. It needs LT’s touch with a twin turbo. I’m 60 and have never had a chance to build a toy like you have. I’m completing my 30x40 workshop and hope to build a like you before I get to old. Sorry long winded. Dig your videos buddy, great job.

a satin black and gold theme would look SO good in that truck imo. Bright colors look best when you can carry them through the whole build, but when only talking engine bay I think dark colors with bright clean color pops looks more sophisticated

I'm extremely OCD. Mine vice playing and building guitars. Not quite as tight on those tolerances,....😆,....but I to analyze to death things. Very satisfying watching this go together. Love your refusal to compromise.

First, I want to thank your wife for supporting you on this adventure, keep up the hard work and 100,000 subscribers are coming soon. I vote to use the Nissan Forklift Orange on the engine. I like that shade of Orange and it's a heavy-duty paint to withstand some abuse. I also like the color green of your welder.

Awesome build. Definitely go bold with the paint color. Something like an anodized color shift like a red to black or a teal to gold would be wild. I wish I would've been more bold when I put my stuff together. I usually stick with chevy orange but when I see the stuff creative stuff being done, I get a little jealous
