Markers are great advice! makes life easier and its always nice to get back to the yard without abrasion marks.

Great video Hayley, the skip lorry driver who trained me how to use the lifting gear would reverse gently till the rubber stops touched the front of the skip then moved forward a couple of feet so it was possible to tie the net on around the front, stay safe and look forward to the next one.

I will keep praising and expressing my respect for this young lady not because she is driving class ones for a living but because of her attitude. Eager to learn, to help, to share! More than a pro, it shows her kind, positive character as a person! If I was the owner of the most expensive fleet of lorries carrying expensive goods I wouldnt hesitate to employ her!! You are going places to your chosen career mam!!

I'm cab hopping on agency so can't always put markers on. I use the old trusted GOAL . So back up leaving plenty of room then get out and look taking note of objects nearby , e.g where is the door line of the cab opposite a fence and where's the back of the lorry in relation to the fence? If parking next to another truck, use the length of the truck next to you as a guide etc . Reverse back again a bit further then GOAL . Doesn't matter how many times as a minute in time saves lots of insurance paperwork and possible your current occupation. One driver I know paced back from the object he was reversing towards ( 12 steps e.g ) until reaching the back of the truck then paced the same 12 steps from his front wheel towards the back of the truck. He then placed a glove on the floor . Reversed back until his front wheel was level with the glove and the backend was then near the object but not touching. We all find our own ways

great advise Hayley great video. I passed class2 last September and I was taught with a peg on the rear mud flaps. I won't be made redundant from my present job until 31 Jan 2021 so can't start driving until then. I've put myself on an agency for Saturday work or ride shotgun without pay but this lockdown and social distancing is making it more difficult, but hay we'll get there. keep the good work up Hayley

Briiliant tip Hayley thank you, i passed my hgv 5 yrs ago and only done a hand full of class 2 jobs before getting a permanent job as an operator driving a crane and shovelling shit all day! thinking of going back to wagons so not feeling confident at the moment.will have to do my cpc again which is not an issue. Thinking of having a days refresher just to get accustomed to driving again. Thanks again Hayley.

Yet another excellent vlog, Hayley. I was only thinking when I was driving around Bristol the other day on my route, if you'd do a tutorial on judging reversing distance, and lo and behold, you did it! Alot of trainers use this marker method of reversing for the C and C+E manoeuvre in the tests. But none of them have explained and demonstrated it as lucidly as you have. I was also very impressed with the previous vlog you did on cornering. I shall review that a few times before I take my test, whenever that might be. Apart from helping new drivers, you are, indirectly, providing sound advice for the test. I feel its all going to help me anyway. The other one you did which I found informative was how to use and thread a ratchet strap. I've never had to do that in my work, and certainly not a chunky industrial thing like that. Do you have to demonstrate that sort of thing to the examiner in C+E test? Goodness I hope not. I'm not the most practical of people. 😕 What has come over in all these vlogs is not only what a great teacher you are, but a very fast learner. Very fast! I know what we do is hardly rocket science, which, ironically, you're also probably capable of, but what comes over in these 50+ films is how you've grown in confidence presenting them. I've wondered why they're so good, and I think it's because you have a nice voice and a nice accent. It's probably become finely tuned from years making yourself heard in the classroom. I particularly like the way you say the word 'lorry'🚛. It sounds more like 'Laurie' which is most endearing. So, since you have such affection for the vehicle you drive, you should ask your employer if you can put one of those banners across the top of the windscreen with the name "Lady Labcoat's Laurie". 😍 What do you think, Hayley, would they allow that? 😄 You must be such a curiosity to them. Just think, if you'd stuck with biomedical science, you might have been battling covid and hailed a hero. As it is, you joined the grizzled and the grumpy, down at ground zero! See, i'm a poet too. 😉 Your company must think quite a lot of you, because you show them up in such a good light. Forward thinking and progressive, and prepared to give a new female driver a chance. Well that's paid off for them, I think. They seem quite happy to let you keep doing this stuff, so obviously see it as worthwhile. The one thing you did time perfectly was getting out of teaching when you did. Six months before covid struck wasn't it? My word, who'd want to do it now? I suppose you could do private science tuition if you wanted to boost your income. There seems to be alot of demand for it at the moment. Actually there's another Patreon channel I subscribe to called 'A Different Bias' on a completely different subject. A guy called Phil Moorhouse, who is a very anti Brexit commentator, puts two vlogs out daily. He is also..... A science teacher! The one thing you both have in common is you're able to put, what to many, are boring or difficult subjects into bite size chunks which they can understand. It's quite an art, but you're both really good at it. Phil's more amusing than you are, with quite a caustic wit. But you're nicer, more personable. You must be to have become one of us! Have you thought of doing the 'O' Licence course? It's a qualification for fleet management in haulage, or big organisations that have fleets. You'd walk it I'm sure. It depends if you want to stay in the industry long term or if you're happy just being a driver. One thing I'd like to ask you is, since you left teaching, and joined the 'real' world with all of us malcontents, how has it changed you as a person? Are you a tougher, more resilient person, though heaven knows, you need that for teaching, or not so easily stressed, and less likely to put put up with nonsense? My guess is, a Hayley going back into the classroom (if you ever did) now would be a very different one to the one who left. What would you say? One final thing, I loved your motorbike vlog with the forward facing camera. That was quite a ride. I passed the test for motorbikes, 24yrs ago. I never took it up. But having seen that, I wish I had!

@HeadsOfTheValleysTraining used this technique Hayley and was essential for me lol When I was doing my Class 1 licence I was covering the trailer headboard in markers as well so I knew what angle the trailer was turning at and when to readjust the steering for the parking manoeuvre. Though it all went to pot when I had a driving evaluation for a job and things were a lot different. The brand new Scania tractor had a drop axle with an axle up so it was so incredibly sensitive on the steering and it was a flatbed instead of a curtain side so suddenly my cheats let me down fast. Always a good trick though if you get a regular truck. I'd definitely be using the trick you shown.

Many thanks I'm doing my hgv hopefully this year. I used to do a method when learning to drive a car . Ie reverse round corner and a turn in the road ie i used to use passenger door handle and line it up with the curb going round corner .and when doing turn in road . We had the rear door locks what used to stick up as soon as that used to hit curbe i knew .my back wheels was somewhat close

That's a nice tip if your on your own very early in the morning or late at night PROVIDED you can see the tape !.. But what if you don't have straps to count ! just a flat side ? The simple answer to all of this is, If your early before others arrive at depot or late at night reverse up bit by it and look as many times as needed. Or if you arrive and it's the middle of the day, then get a member of staff to act as a BANKSMAN to guide you back ! If you cannot see.. then you don't move ... SIMPLE.

I'll let you into the secret the milk driver uses at my supermarket, just reverse as far as you like and push the scissor lift back to meet your needs and the clutch forward just enough for the plate to sit on the wagon 🙄

Great tip. As other people have mentioned, the truck I passed on had a bulldog clip on the mud flaps. But what if you're jumping in different lorries all the time and haven't got time to figure out where to put your marker? Any rules of thumb that can be applied to any lorry? Thanks.

Hi Hayley think iv watched all your videos a question. How did you start out IV got my 7.5 ton license but getting a job is like knitting fog. Any tips would be great all jobs say need at least two years experience if they don't give you a chance. Cheers Graham
