The discussion of the "straight man" dynamic ALMOST gets at what I think is one of the most genius things about Sunny: that the straight man is everyone and no one. Yes, every main character is insane---but they're all insane in different ways. And this enables them to play the role of rotating straight man for each other. E.g.: Dennis reacts like a normal person to Mac's delusions of badassery, while Mac is able to see the pathology in Dennis's predatory "implication" speech with perfect clarity. Frank's derangement is obvious to everyone, yet he's the only one with the practical shrewdness to recognize the idiocy of the others' harebrained business schemes. We can identify with Charlie when he's witnessing Dee's lunatic open mic routine, and identify with Dee when she reacts to Charlie's catfood-&-piss-jars domestic situation. Et cetera. It's really brilliant; it eliminates the need for the boring "sensible" character who clutters up almost every other sitcom & who no one really likes. I think maybe we owe Kaitlin Olson thanks for this? I remember her saying that early on, Dee was written as the straight character and she vocally objected, saying she wanted to be nuts too. So glad she did!

Michael Naughton is a great guest because he has an outsider's perspective on the making of the show, so the guys actually have to talk about their filming process more than with Mary Elizabeth or Hornsby. His unusual career path was also so fascinating. I didn't realize he was so aware of Sunny fan opinions online! Thanks for making this happen
@bubbawiggles
@bubbawiggles Жыл бұрын
I'd say you're mostly right, but he DEFINITELY teeters into absurdity. He schemes for Kitten MittOns, he loses his temperament in court, he cannot WAIT to crush them, he's fully ready to kill a man NOT for being a Nazi but because he wants the gang out of his hair... in a way, he's kind of the "worst person" in the show and the actor gets it SO RIGHT!

@@bubbawiggles The lawyer IS a straight man - he just has the means and power to retaliate against the gang for their horrible schemes, due to his position as a Harvard lawyer, when compared to a character like The Waiter who has to be more passive towards them because of his job. When he gets back at them with his "lawyering", it IS what a normal outsider would do, if they were a lawyer. As for "stealing the rights" to Kitten Mittens, the gang does a LOT of messed up shit to him first including breaking into his office, tying up his employees in the bathroom, stalking him, breaking into his car, offering to rape his wife and firing a gun in his workplace, so if his only retaliation is to get them to sign a bad contract, I would hardly characterize him as the villain in the situation. This is also the case in most episodes involving him. The only time he veers into absurdity is towards the end of the Trial of the Century, but honestly, who wouldn't when surrounded by the gang, the McPoyles and the Ponderosas, none of whom operate on normal logic?! When your trial devolves into birds hiding in hats pecking people's eyes and throats out, having a mental breakdown is a natural and highly appropriate reaction. It will be interesting to see how they bring his character back, if they ever choose to do so (and I hope they do!). Will he return as a straight man again, now that several years have passed, or has the rage just festered so the he too has become unhinged for good? Personally, I would hope for "straight man but with flashes of rage" because Brian Unger's sarcastic line deliveries are some of the best and funniest I've seen.

I love it when you have guests like him on. It’s why I also enjoy seeing the bloopers for the show. It makes me enjoy the show, which typically has a hilariously mean tone, even more knowing that everyone is a second away from cracking up and having such a good time.

There are 3 actors that just made me love their appearances. Richard Ruccolo, the dude in that oldies rock café episode and the line about "The old guy from that doo-wop group died on my front doorstep last night and it kinda put me in a funk", Sinbad just swearing up a storm because in the 90s he was the "clean" comedian, and Mr. Naughton offering to let Mac and Charlie "share" a job after seriously reading their "group" resume.... Just so, so freaking funny.

In the episode "Time's Up For The Gang", in Dennis' speech about sexual harassment and ugliness, he mentions Cricket in the slideshow, and how he was "born this way" (disfigured and grotesque.. a monster), completely glossing over the fact that it was any fault of theirs that he ended up that way.
