The young (14 yrs. Old) boy who murdered the foreman on his ranch was sentenced to 16 years in prison, even though his stories of horrific physical, sexual, and psychological abuse were corroborated by others who worked on that ranch in Marysville, CA. One of the witnesses testified to the abuse and referred to ranch workers as “slaves,” being paid as little as $1 a year (yes, that’s $1 … ONE) for their labor. He was sent to the ranch by his sister as punishment for hanging out with a rough crowd of boys. He was released in 1914 after doing 10 years in San Quentin. Apparently, he married, had children, a steady job, and passed away in 1965 in Washington state. What a horrible injustice to send this boy away like that. This is why there are unions and child labor laws.

That's some impressive and interesting background - just curious - how did you find this info?

@@ParkerAllen2 Good ol’ Wikipedia. I frequently go there when I see these old photos and the subjects are identified. And I usually will find something about them. This story rankled me. Kids this young rarely kill an adult like this without there being some terrible secret re: inappropriate behavior on part of the adult. I can only imagine how little was done for abused children back then. I always keep in mind that the ASPCA for abused animals came long before anything for abused children: in fact, the very first legal child abuse case in New York had to be filed under the auspices of the ASPCA. That rankles me, too! When I was younger, I worked in a special court program called CASA for children in foster care. Some of the stories I heard were horrifying and heartbreaking.

@@cydkriletich6538 Thanks for the info. I never would have guessed that a local news story from that far back in time would be something that could be looked up on Wikipedia. It's a haunting story. When people talk about the good old days they don't realize how much bad stuff went on. Years ago, I did research on the Johnstown Flood (1889, Pennsylvania) by reading old local newspapers on microfilm. A separate story caught my eye: 3 or 4 boys around 14 years old beat to death one of their classmates for no particular reason - a story that seems very modern in it's pointless brutality, but it occurred in those "simpler" times.

@@ParkerAllen2 I’m a 75 yr. old woman, and I don’t understand people, particularly women, who want to go back to those so-called “good ol’ days”; the days when a woman couldn’t get her own credit card without it being co-signed by one of her male family members…even a brother! And if you’re a man, I hope this isn’t TMI for you, but it was the world we lived in back then…if a woman got pregnant, she was expected to leave her job. In the early 1970’s, I applied for a p/t sales clerk position at a large, well-known department store. On the application form was the question “when was your last period?” !!! I was so p.o.’d that I wrote “At the end of this sentence.” I made that period at the end of that sentence really big! Then, I left! So, why would anyone, especially a woman, think those were the “good ol’ days!” 🙄 Besides, back then, no Wikipedia! BTW: Johnstown flood…wow! What an incredible story! I’ve seen at least one, if not more, documentaries about it. Hubris on part of the wealthy, then tragedy. Another incredible flood story is the huge flood that took out Galveston Island off the coast of Texas way back when. If you’re unfamiliar with it, check it out!

He betrayed her and, whilst he was paying no heed, she excised from him his manhood. Such was wont to be considered glory (and still is) because far too many who by birth possess such anatomy believe by that, and that alone, is their right, title and privilege to behave and speak as they like to anyone, particularly to those who do not natively possess such anatomy and commensurate physiology. In other words, she lopped off his true love when he was none the wiser likely because he wronged her in the worst of ways and had it coming (pun intended).

Bertillon's photograph and other inclusive data on "criminals" is the very basis of most criminal data systems worldwide. Initially, his techniques and inclusive data were known as "Bertillonage". Quite fascinating, really.

It's amazing to think that these people lived and died all those years ago. I mean their photos make them seem like they could be living next door! Their lives were undoubtedly a lot harder than the lives we have today and a lot of them were just doing whatever it took to survive even if it was brealing the law. And I suppose that breaking the law back then was a lot easier to get away with as well so it was probably worth the risk. A whole other world back in those days and a lot of people from today probably wouldn't survive very long!

they look like they were recent photos of people living now - except for the straggly hair and clothes. the young man in for sodomy made me so sad. some look like complete “bad guys”, some look sorry for what they did, and a few were just caught up in poverty. hard labor for larceny is really not fair. but then for most of these people, life wasn’t fair anyway! thank you - life is so hard for so many people. 🥀
