Deltic no. 22 'Royal Scots Grey'. She Roars and Clags the hell out of West Ealing with a 2tone.

The exhaust manifolds on the Deltic are water cooled so when idling the lube oil collects in puddles. When you open up the hot exhaust burns the oil hence lots of blue smoke. It all adds to the Deltic show with the F1 note.

I love trains..I love all the engineering that goes into making them.. love the fact that you have to bring them to life to get going. Living on the west coast main line was the highlight of my childhood.. please keep posting!

love that exhaust note - sounds more like a sports car than a locomotive! Though I bet those sports cars would kill for the horsepower of those deltics.

The Napier engines in the Deltics were becoming highly stressed about 1972-1973, so when they came in for Overhaul they were "Fiddled about with" which solved the stressing problem but had the effect that if you didn't keep up to the injectors they smoked a bit, And most preservationists, good, even excellent, as they are can't always keep up to the injectors.

@brianwhittington50862 жыл бұрын
I used to see Deltics every week at Doncaster Station in the early 1970's I don't recall any of the class ever kicking out that much smoke, especially on powering through the station. You did occasionally see a brief burst of smoke, and even the odd exhaust flare when one had been ticking over a long time on the platform, then revving up to pull away. The Doncaster Works are just across the tracks, adjacent to the station. You soon saw the smokey ones parked on the service lane for maintenance. Those Napier engines must have clocked up an astronomical mileage now. Scarcity of replacement parts was one reason some, and then all were withdrawn, as robbing good serviceable parts became an issue. It was a very sad time seeing them all sat on the scrap line outside Doncaster Works with missing parts.

Don't forget, the carriages hauled by this diesel locomotive carry huge amounts of people. The number of cars it would take to accomodate these people would produce an equal if not an increased amount of emissions. Also the train in this video is an excursion train, that only comes out on special occasions. Most other diesel trains in the UK have far less exhaust gases than this one.

The one on the rear was not actually powering, that was there to act as a backup incase the Deltic broke down. Train companies recieve fines from the owners of the track if they are responsible for any disruption and smaller companies that run special trains like this can't afford to recieve such fines. The rear locomotive is a class 57, which is bassicly a recycled loco. It uses the bodyshell of a class 47 but a newer GM engine is fitted. I have found the 57's to be liked by many people.

@BoilerRoom4 Yes, 'Deltics' were twin-engined. The locos always pulled away on one engine with the second kicking in at 27-29mph when full power can be applied. The second engine's rpm would jump from idle at 700rpm to somewhere near full power at 1500rpm. They are also two-stroke engines, which smoke more that four-stroke engines do. Add to this how the loco would probably have been plodding through London at 20mph for ages, 'oiling up' its silencers. These factors result in the smoke you see.

@sydmichel Its so on the return trip, it will be hauled by the rear loco rather than spending more money getting access to turn the front loco around. But yes it can also be there for a back up, railtour companies face fines etc if it is because one of their trains has broken down that normal services are delayed or cancelled.
@bronzeonion12 жыл бұрын
@BoilerRoom4 It means, that the 2nd engine is not switched on yet, it switches on when the train gathers more speed.
