Who would turn the opportunity to drive a 577bhp Golf R down on Cheshires B roads? I’m excited to see this car in the UK 2018 drag and track season.
The road map (pump fuel) creates 530bhp. I’ve personally seen this car on the dyno and do over 75 pulls in 1 night!
Full Car Mods at time of review:
✔️APR Engine including APR Connecting Rods, ARP 2000 rod bolts, APR Pistons APR Head Studs,
✔️Brog Warner EFR7163 Turbo matted to 3” APR Downpipe and Mid section, Scorpion back box
✔️ Intercooler, Induction Kit, Uprated Fuel System (APR low pressure fuel pump / high pressure fuel pump)
✔️Standard Pretoria Alloys with Uniroyal Rainsport 3 235/35/19 (excellent for grip in wet) and Standard Brakes.
This car also has DCC, however and I know since driving this car the brakes have been upgraded.

We have the mk6 version stage 1 only the speed in them feels so different, and it feels quick not a slow speed. Thanks to DSG i couldnt imagine this stage 3 most cars on the road would get hammered, even with a car with similar power this car is leighter

When you think about it, what an amazing engine. I mean even if you don't go for the custom build, the relatively inexpensive tune and opening the airways of a stage 11 give you a hell f a lot of bang for the buck.

Lamont Cranston yeah I’d agree with that. For the cost, definitely. Next step us is rs3 which at the moment is pricey but is unreal at stage 1 levels

APR has been doing it long before most. My GTI was a blast to drive at 310 HP with just a K04 and supporting mods. Stg3 is the next best step.

Golf R is an amazing car mainly due to emotion otherwise it's a So I slightly boosted gti. I have an 09 MK5 GLI APR stage2+ runs quickly though looking in to a stage3+ in the near future.

It's a Golf!! Yeah going this stage 3 APR route is cool but this crate engine isn't cheap and the car will still be worth didly squat in x number of years.

Sergio you are right, value is a subjective thing, to a degree but this engine is the price of some cars! People will do what they want and by no means would I ever criticise them for that, it's their money.

Thanks for the video. Firstly, the camera work is simply stunning. The best by for from any of the car reviewers around the world, and there's some big names in that group Chris Harris, 5th Gear, TFLCar and the other Nth American guys) etc. I'm just wondering how the stage 3 setup compares in feel to the stock turbo as far as lag is concerned. Is it true that the EFR turbo spools up almost as quickly as the journal bearing stock turbo. The APR stage 3 would be interesting in a Passat W206 or Arteon. Also, I can't find the link to the Ecotune Crate engine video. Cheers from Australia.

Truly kind words. Xavier Geurgiou Photography and Film can take the credit for filming. He's a sound lad. Long way to go before any of those guys and more consistent reviews from me. The car is truly phenomenal. There is near no lag. This video explains how a twin scroll works: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ip16h7WD0bmpiX0.html some of this guys videos are really good. The twin scroll differs from the stock turbo as its more punchy throughout the rev range. Not Just top end or just middle. The engine is an APR crate engine. 5 seconds from the end bottom left is all the info you need. Ecotune in Glasgow (Scotland UK) fitted this one. yourfast07 garages are moving away from revo and going to APR due to better results from the tunes and from what I understand APR sound like a better company to work with on the mechanics' side of things

Elia Evagora I don't know how are they doing now, but I bought a softwares from them before and had a lot of issues and they had no idea what's wrong, took them some time before they realized that it's pushing too much boost and valve springs didn't hold good. It's the company that wants to be first with everything and not putting the time on testing. I actually know a lot of people who won't buy apr after same issues. They might be better now I don't really know.

Lamont Cranston exhaust, intake, intercooler, turbo pipe, hoses, suspension, brakes, roll bars, inlet...that’s before looking at the engine components. The question of built engine vs apr is down to how deep your pockets are. I’d personally pay for the warranty and security of accountability/ being looked after rather than trying to frankinstein an engine build with different components. For some it works, for the majority it doesn’t. I can only tell you what I’ve observed 👍🏾

The car has a sports cat fitted and I can confirm it passed an emissions test during its mot no problems and was running over 500 bhp at the time

Very nice :) my 2012 rs3 8p is at a tuners shop now, it's in for a stage 3... Hoping around 500-520hp and 450ish or a bit more torque

Tom Perry I have a soft spot for the 8p rs3. For me they are the equivalent escort rs cosworth (but I was too young to get a cosworth when they came out). Have you forged the engine?

Hi no the engine is good for up to 600hp on stock internals, however the new rs3 8v has a new all alloy block and hollowed crankshaft so I'm guessing that might not be as strong for high end tuning not that it's not already fast enough! Yes you don't see too many first gen rs3 cars mines only on 36000 miles.. I've ordered a stiffened rear anti roll bar and a new set of Oz hyper gt wheels the cars in silver

Oettinger do a built engine with 750hp and 664lbft so it's emerging just how well the 2.5tfsi engines are designed I must correct myself on the tuning capabilities of the newer engines, have you seen the video of the guys in a ttrs with a gtx turbo doing some highway data logging? That thing I believe is around the 700 +? Hp it pulls so savagely but I'll be more than happy with mine as a fast road car!

tom perry oettinger built a golf r with 2.5ltr rs3 engine out of an rs3 8p. That’s backwards to me when you consider that the 8p was tfsi and the 8v platform is mqb ( the same as the golf7). Different ecu’s but easier to make everything align although most bits have to be custom (I’ve looked into it) if your using an 8v. Above stage 2 some, I’ve heard of some rs3’s have suffered with cylinder/ valve failure but that could be said for any modified car tbf. Would love to get your car on my channel!

Stefan Cupovic this isn’t a golf engine though, this is an Apr engine. 577hp is achieved on racefuel. This is one of the options for the extremes of tuning for the road. This cars daily driven as is my stage 2 car. Time will tell...

What would the rough cost be to get a Golf R to this stage of tune?

DanTheMancUK stage 1, 1k; stage 2 additional 2k; stage 3 additional 7k. Rough idea there. From stock to stage 3 would be 10k but you no longer would have a Hot hatch, you have a super hatch. It would be one hell of a jump, worth it but you’d miss the fun of stage 2 I think.

X1AOU The plan would be to go to stage 2 straight away and then stage 3 around 6 months later. My Cupra is the same EA888 engine but with a tuning box (my cars under warranty) so I could transfer my intake and what not to the Golf. I'm from Manchester so Awesome would be my local specialists which is why I'm thinking APR. Loving the channel by the way. I've watched 3 of your vids today. This one, your stage 2 video and the big brake kit video. Subscribed.

DanTheMancUK thanks man appreciate the feedback. That’s basically what I’ve done except having a baby slowed down the plans to get the stage 3 kit. Mine should be ready for January... Get yourself down to have a look round if you’ve not been. Confidence in your tuner is probably the most important thing when tuning. Look out for more vids 👍🏾

Wonderful video! Got a qustion. I own the GTI Clubsport 2017 as seen on my channel, sharing same engine & alot of internals except 4WD of Golf R. Im thinking Stage 1 or 2 tune it, but i notice the turbo gets realley hot on these small powerful engines. Its an MK7, do i need to be worried smoking my turbo if i go Stage 1/2 ... ?? Anyone have a sensible opinion...?

The sensible option surely is to get a faster car? But sensible isn't what brought you to look at stage 3. Nearly everything on this car has been changed in the engine combustion system. Stage 1/2 I think you'll be ok. Where you based?

Will be fine mate I have a s3 saloon with stage 3 turbo technics on stock internals And has been fine for the last 20000 miles so I doubt you would have any issues

Stage 1 will be fine, stage 2 you’re only looking at a 9 BHP increase and you’ll be putting a hell of a lot of strain on the turbo

Not an mk7 but mk6..I did stage 2+ turboback exhaust, software, intake, motor mounts and beat it like a redheaded step child for 60k. Only thing went was clutch. I have a much more powerful car now and miss the GTI everyday.

A Golf R aint a cheap car to buy, and then having to fork out the extra £££'s to get it APR tuned??? Add up all that cash and buy a car in another league to match that sort of performance.. Because come time to sell, it will still be recognised as a Golf R with abit more power.. Doubt you will get back anything near what was forked out to tune it..

Audi RS3 and TTRS 2.5 is making 800-900 whp in some KZfaq videos. This 2.0L is one impressive engine for what it makes, but the 5-popper is that much more amazing.

now am no petrol head by no means...... yes i drive Diesels... but if i had the money to blow on any car atm it would without a doubt be the Audi RS3 end of. Golf R na no thx anything 4pot thats a petrol esp all them engines in them or the GTI or the SEAT Cupra or Audi S3 have no sound of any power atall. The diff in that 400hp 5cyl in all the Audi's its like a performance petrol engine should sound. i bet by the time you buy your Golf R & then do this mod with that crate engine jaysus it would have been cheaper buying a RS3 ? and just remapping that to near enuff 500hp. each to there own i guess. In any case where on UK roads can you actually use all this power ??

I agree in one way but not in another.your right the 4 cylinder does not sound great. the Audi five cylinder does.I drive a mk7 golf R and it drives great on the road. it is not however a track car. but on the road it drives better than an RS3. but if i had the money i would own an RS3. price (the Audi costs over $100.000) in Australia.compare that to $60.000 for the R. the Golf is the bargain,

HamJumbo3 I think this is a valid argument you make, which is why I drove a stage 2 rs3, the s3 and even a 400bhp golf r to compare. The 5 pot sound is gorgeous, but the golf r is exceptional on the road. Doubt everyone will do the crate engine from my understanding it allows race fuel and 577bhp to be achieved - many will be happy with just the kit...plus in a few years time they’ll probably fall in price and there will be used ones about (2-3k I’m guessing) Everyone’s circumstances will be different as well - I remember when I bought my golf r, monthly payments were 850 for the rs3 compared to 495 for the golf. I bought knew, if I was buying used can pick up a golf r now for 18-22k. Throw 9k at it and you’ve got not just an rs3 beater but an rs6 beater! Hoarse for courses. It not just about the peak figures with this car, it’s the cars ability to do everything so well.

In France you can't do so easy : you first have to get an agrement from the constructor of the car. That's why the most cars are unligal cause tuned without this document... :-(

jonny jones no, on playback i thought that too. I think that’s why credibility to the person who is driving it needs to be verified. In the last 12 months I’ve driven a 991.2 Carrara S, RS7, RS7 stage 2, Golf R stage 1 and 2, Standard Golf GTI Clubsport, Golf R mk6 stage 2+, Porsche Cayenne Turbo S facelift, rs3 8v standard, stage 1 and stage 2, Audi rs3 8p standard, Audi S3 stage 3 and some other non performance cars like polo gti, corsa vxr, e class coupe and Mini Cooper s and d. It’s part of the reason I started the channel, thought other people might find it remotely interesting....a 0-60 in 3s full weight is quick no? Thanks for checking out the video. 👊🏾

jonny jones the prices are on www.goapr.co.uk but atleast 6-7k. I nearly bought an m5 before modding my car (lapis on my channel) and everyone says the m4 is miles better so not sure I would move from an m4 to golf r...I’d recommend getting yourself in one for a passenger ride or even drive. It’s not really a fair comparison though as the m4 unless mapped is going to feel under whelming to a fully tuned golf r. Other than water meth and stripping it not sure it could go any faster lol

Albert Zion it won’t: 1. It’s not my car to truely thrash, never going to take it that extra 10% incase I run out of talent. 2. We were on public roads, recording 😂 I mean come on, hardly going to do a 0-160mph - I value my license 3. The road test was supposed to show a different angle than just all out speed. I’m still learning how to be better at this... Thanks for checking the video out though 👍🏾

X1AOU Thanx bro...have u thought about changing your fueling to Iroz with flex fuel E85 capability with UM Software...Been seeing some big numbers with that combo... wasn't try to insult your whip APR just charges an arm and a leg for a build. And their Stage 3 systems have been a debacle for many...I like your vids!

SadisticPatrons the iroz kit looks just as good as the Apr kit but e85 fuel is not readily available in the uk. My cars the blue one (blue at the moment - sub for more info 🤙🏾). This black car is a friends car but I’m going the same route. I think a lot comes down to trust in your tuner. Awesome GTI/ APR uk have looked after my cars for 6 years and I’ve seen many horror stories from other tuners locally in the uk from friends. In an ideal world I’d have both kits haha but if anything goes wrong I know that the guys are Apr uk have my back so I’m sticking with Apr. The US is a different market and whilst I’ve followed APR USA’s woes not had any issues like seen in the US in the uk. Funny enough one of the reasons I started this channel was because I wasn’t seeing content like this available (in the uk atleast). Glad your enjoying it, got lots planned and at this point not trying to be a KZfaq star, just trying to help with my journey and experiences. 👍🏾

Don't get these. You only need so much power, then the rest of what makes a car fun is what it is like to drive. And with FWD, automatic and a weird weight distro, it seems kinda strange to invest so much to make more power in something that still sounds like a 4 banger too.

Take a 18 year old Honda with a f20c, just add a turbo kit leave the engine and you'll still make more than 530 bhp on pump fuel, granted some lag and not 4wd but it's this isn't that impressive.

what would be the overall cost of this? Car+engine+built box+stage 3 clutch+driveshafts ect ect ect then there's the labor!!. Gonna be looking at near on 50k?

andrew wright 🤔 I’m not sure 50k is accurate. Engine 10k (even if your forge internals still 6-7k) Turbo kit 7k (near enough) No need for change of clutches or driveshafts although probably would want to consider handling and brake upgrades (4-5k) Add to that the stage 2 hardware intercooler and induction kit (1k) that’s 20k. Think you’d be hard pressed to find someone who wants to do this to a brand new car but on a low mileage 2015 car (20k) there aren’t many all weather cars that can deliver like this. Plenty of cars I would love to have if I had 40k too...but most people, me included, don’t. It’s done over time.

X1AOU you're going to do the labor yourself.... If not that what 2/3k then vat, clutch? Thats gonna cost. is why I said near on 50k not bang on. New car option and the money gets silly. If the box goes south after a year.... 2k rebuild cost, haldex cost...I don't want to think about that. 10/15k on an old s3 say 1999 plate...would be an interesting race but at a fraction of the cost. Could get air ride as well lol.
