I bet that the council members have big wages, company cars, all expenses paid for by Tax payers money, a big bonus at Christmas, a big party at Christmas all paid for by tax payer cash, big houses with subsidised mortgages from the tax payer, a closed shop union, clothing allowance, child care allowance, paid holidays, free travel on the transit system,. need I go on???.... get real people the council do not care about you unless it's voting time. dothefivedothefive dothefivedothefive does the council clear the snow off of your path? are you taxed on rubbish collection, do they fight for your rights on bedroom tax? do they lobby against the rising cost of food? Two questions" 1.)What is the excuse for all the dirty stuff lying about absolutely everywhere (counter top, etc.)? 2.) Why are most people - I'm NOT saying all! - who go for food parcels overweight? Oh - and the third issue are the piercings of the daughter, what they've cost would have paid for a loaf and some rashers of bacon or even a few veggies. HOWEVER - Sue you are doing a wonderful job, even though in cases like the one shown here, there is help needed at the root of the problem.

Why are these people in this situation? Have they tried getting jobs or have they been on benefits forever? Some families in Britain have 3 generations who believe they are entitled to live off benefits. On the other hand there are deserving people who have tried their hardest to find jobs.

Why the hell do we have private companies running our gas electric and water , trains , all the other countries in Europe runs these not for profit! We need to cut out private companies and sell these basic necessities at cost price. You should also never be allowed to by a council house it’s a waste of housing stock. Once a person passes the council house should move on to someone else! What a mess we live in.

Totally agree. I focussed on homelessness as part of my policy degree and it’s an absolute scandal how the Tories politicised housing in the worst possible way of a bribe essentially meaning those that could snapped up good quality council housing at heavily discounted rates. There was even tales of relatives purchasing properties ‘on behalf of’ their grandparents in desirable areas of London and made an absolute killing as they eventually sold them on. Social housing was meant to be a safety net for the most economically vulnerable whilst you tried to improve your lot and then could move into private rented or their own home so freeing up a certain percentage for the youngsters and families coming up the chain. I honestly am amazes this ‘homes for votes’ was even allowed. It’s both heartbreaking when you consider the repercussions and state of social housing now. Absolutely scandalous.

The root of the problem is the 'Welfare State'. It strips you of self reliance, respect and encourages laziness. When you give something for nothing on a continual basis the desire to change one's situation diminishes.

I teach a class for desperately poor women so they can learn how to put food on the table and shoes on their children's feet. I'm thoroughly nonjudgmental in my classroom, but I'll tell you from experience that if my pupil has money for body piercings, she has money for dish soap. If this family's home is a rental, the government needs to step in and make the landlord bring it up to code. If they own that home, they need to sell it and move to something less dangerous. I'm a senior citizen living on a poverty-level Social Security income since The Crash of 2008, so I know what I'm talking about. Poverty can hit just about anyone, but the keys to overcoming it are adaptability, perseverance, and a personal sense of industry. Don't call me a snob; my mission is to encourage the disadvantaged to do better.

You are right in so much as, it is disgusting that people in this country are forced to live in these conditions. England is one of the richest countries in the world. But it isn’t the money given to help “ the boat ppl” or the undeserving poor, or the immigrants- it is the fact that our laws are there to help, the landlords instead of the tenants, the wealthy instead of the poorest. Our government and our media like to divide the poor into deserving and undeserving - anyone who is unable to support themselves and their families needs help. Perhaps if the establishment where to, pocket less ( tax breaks to big companies and rich ppl) and use the law to stop exploitative and unscrupulous landlords and employers there wouldn’t be the need for this lovely kind hard working lady to have to work so hard. The poor and the needy need our help. What they do not need is for us argue amongst ourselves over who needs or deserves that help.
