Back in the day, when I purchased my first home to live-in; that was Miami in the early 1990s, first mortgages with rates of 8 to 9% and 9% to 10% were typical. People will have to accept the possibility that we won't ever return to 3%. If sellers must sell, home prices will have to decline, and lower evaluations will follow. Pretty sure I'm not alone in my chain of thoughts.

If anything, it'll get worse. Very soon, affordable housing will no longer be affordable. So anything anyone want to do, I will advise they do it now because the prices today will look like dips tomorrow. Until the Fed clamps down even further, I think we're going to see hysteria due to rampant inflation. You can't halfway rip the band-aid off.

You're spot on! It's essential to be aware of the housing market and financial markets. With the new mortgage rates and evolving guidelines, it's smart to think about adjusting your investments. Consulting with an independent financial advisor who comprehends the financial markets can guide you in making the best decisions during these uncertain times.

Mortgage rates are currently at an all time high since 2000(23 years) and based on statistics on inflation, we might see that number skyrocket further, a 30-year fixed rate was only 5% this time last year, so do I just keep waiting for a housing crash before buying or redirect my focus to the equity market

Since Biden took office, there seem to have been more unfavorable results in America. These results include effects on the markets, such as price declines and sharp increases in inflation, as well as bank failures. I wonder if the sudden increase in interest rates will help value investors or if it would be wiser to stay away from the stock and financial markets for the time being.

It really hit me when they spoke to the boy. I saw myself in that clip. Me and Mum were evicted from my childhood home when I was 14, this was during the credit crunch as it was called in 2009, as my estranged Dad stopped paying the mortgage for a year without warning. Back then, we had to rely on Enfield Council to rehouse us and council housing was in a shortage. We were given temporary accomodation only a few miles from my house almost immediately and luckily only had to move once more into another temporary accomodation before getting a permanent council place. It took 8 years to get a permanent place but at least it was in the same council area. I found that tough growing up and it really scars you for life but at least it was proper accomodation. I can't imagine what it is like now for these people, it is just not fair! What does months of uncertainty in a hotel room or a tent do to someone!!! These people and really everyone are being failed by councils and the government and it is an embarassment. Why should someone have to uproot their family 100s of miles away because housing is so unaffordable?! These people are just trying to live their lives, its not fair! This problem won't be fixed unless councils can buy all the empty homes cheaply and start a mass social home building programme. Right to buy without replacing the council houses sold was a colossal mistake.

It's not fair that the landlords can do this it's just greed on the landlords part. I live in West Yorkshire, and 1 bedroom flats in rough areas are going for over a thousand pounds a month it's totally unfair and ridiculous. Whereas just over a year ago the same flat was 375 per month. That flat has trebled, and it needs to stop. Your right about mentioning london. So much is location. In my northern town the average rent, including houses is £600 pcm. It's a town of low wages so people discount it as a place to live so there's plenty of property for sale or rent. A semi detached house is only £130k and you can buy a terraced house for way less than £100k. Yes wages are lower than other areas but when I'm on only £28k per year, buying my 1800 sq ft, 50s built semi for £70k was no problem even as a sole mortgage holder. Yet people earning double the money than I do can't afford to even rent a place in such as London. Too many people look at London with starry eyes.

I’m a renter, but I also understand enough about the rental market to know this is not all down to greedy landlords. Are there greedy unscrupulous landlords, absolutely but they are not the majority. There are multiple reasons why we are in the housing mess we are in today - firstly we don’t build enough houses, and that has been the case for decades. Not only do we not build enough houses, but when we do build houses, they are often the wrong type of property for the people most in need of housing. Also in this country we have a free for all when it comes to foreigners investing in property. Many countries put various restrictions on foreigners when it comes to property ownership, but not here. Foreign investors in large cities like London buy thousands of properties and use them as places to park their money, this artificially inflates prices, and adds to properties being unaffordable for local people. On the subject of Landlords - it is estimated that in 2022 alone 127,000 private rental properties were lost to the market. This year 2023 it is estimated that 10% of private rental properties will be removed from the market…..in 2024 it is expected to get even worse. Landlords are selling up in their droves…..the primary reason; the government. Several years ago the government began to change the way landlords were taxed on rental properties. In some cases the taxes paid by landlords have become so punitive, it has become unviable to keep the property. Some landlords actually ended up paying the government more money in tax than they bought in via the rent. The government were warned that it would result in a mass exodus of landlords, but as they were so keen on pushing the agenda of greedy landlords were the problem, (to cover up their own deficiencies) no one cared that landlords would be taxed more (and why should they) This is only the start….given the hike in interest rates, and even more punitive rules against landlords to come, and it’s going to get much, much, worse….as more landlords sell up, and there are fewer rental properties prices will rise even further. There is no prospect of more houses being built, because the government has no interest in doing so….plus add to that the NIMBYS who are masters of getting new housing developments delayed, or even canceled and the future looks grim. On a final note, it used to be the case that 63% of landlords owned just one property, that figure has now dropped to around 43%. Interestingly the tax changes I mentioned were specifically designed to penalise small landlords of this type. Larger landlords who hold their properties within a business are not affected in the same way by these tax changes……it just so happens that scores of government ministers, and other politicians own large property portfolios held within businesses. They look after themselves but screw over the little guy, more for them, and we all lose as a result. This is far more complex, than the stereotypical greedy landlord…true in some cases, but often a sound-bite used by the government to deflect what’s really going on.

For anyone in this situation struggling down south : things are better up north and you can still be well connected to major city hubs like Manchester if that’s your thing. Rent can be hovering around 550 to 700 per month for many quite nice flats and terraced houses which would hopefully be affordable for someone on full time pay. You might not have family and friends up here but there’s lots of green space, job opportunity and things to do.

Why doesn't the government build public housing? They should build tiny home communities. These young families should move in with the pensioners who are unable to afford both heat and food. Comb9ne their resources so everyone eats, everyone has heat, and everyone has a roof. I am not saying to force them together, but people could sign up for such a program. I have seen so many documentaries about pensioners being so miserable and cold and hungry and lonely. They might enjoy having a young family around.

Been there and it's horrible. The fear you feel especially when you have a child. I was top of the list and classed as homeless after my marriage broke down. I applied for my area and was told it could take up to 6 years even though I was at the top of the list. I ended up having to move to a place I'd never been before and it took so long to find it. My son had to change school. But I am eternally grateful. We had a roof over our heads. I never want to be in that situation again. Having to smile to your child when inside your crumbling and your world has fallen apart is one of the hardest things I had to do.

Hopefully you were able to get a job in your new area. The big problem is that anywhere that has full employment has very high rents and very low available rentals and anywhere with cheap rents or a lot of available rentals either has poor living conditions or little or no suitable employment. As an Irishman I was shocked at the cost of rail travel in the UK and its increasingly unaffordability for commuting as a way to access affordable rents. The system seems to be set up to get the ordinary worker either by high rents in job rich areas or high commuting costs from reasonably affordable areas. Ireland faces a similar housing problem in that the local councils who traditionally looked after public housing provision have almost ceased operating in that area. A perfect storm of high labour costs, high material and energy costs, lack of trained people willing to work in construction and a totally obstructive and slow planning process has led to this disaster. At one time in the 1990's an average single Irish worker could afford a basic house on 3 times their annual wage. Mortgages were for 20 years, sometimes less. Now the person needs 10 times the average industrial wage and a mortgage for 30 years or more to get the average modern house.

I'm glad your life is better now. I hope you don't mind me asking, Are you British? The reason I ask is because this seems to be happening in most if not all industrialized countries. I've seen stories like this in Canada as well. My thought is that corporate greed has taken over even more during and since COVID, and this is the result. I have really come to realize since I retired 10 years ago, how fortunate I am to have a home.
@rosewest5168
@rosewest5168 9 ай бұрын
@@titanman8302 Thank you. Yes I am British. Back in the 80's Margaret Thatcher brought in the "right to buy" meaning people living in authority housing could purchase the property at a big discount. Which at the time would have been great for people I'm guessing to be able to own their own home and have that security but fast forward to now there has been a lack of social housing since. The government haven't built enough social housing meaning the register or waitlist is huge. It has given Private landlords the chance to cash in because of the lack of housing they can charge more, meaning people like myself wouldn't be able to afford to rent privately. It frightened me and I would go as far to say changed me as a person. Before that I was married for 16 years, a stay at home mum and working part time. My marriage broke down. My husband said he would pay the mortgage instead of paying me maintenence for our son and I agreed but he stopped paying the mortgage without me knowing. I had a letter months later from his solicitor saying the house was going to be repossessed and that "You and your son will be removed by bailiffs" My then husband had moved away and in with another woman. He cut contact with his son. It was just a desperate situation and all I could think about was my son. Do I tell him? How can I not tell him but more than anything I didn't want to scare him. The word "bailiffs" scared me. In the UK when you are on the waitlist they use a bidding system. So they put up houses that are available and every Friday you have to place a bid. Whoever is at the top of the list will get offered that property. Hundreds of people bid and sometimes there will be just 5 properties that week. I was top of the list but there were always 60+ people above me bidding on any one property. A property came up one week, in a place I'd never been too, miles from where I lived but I put a bid on it and had to wait till Monday to find out I was successful. I nearly clapsed from the relief. I signed on the Wednesday. Fast forward 3 years we are still here. You never think you will ever be homeless but life can change in a split second. I would be scared to leave here now. If I got into a relationship where it progressed I know it would scare me to move in with someone because of what happened. On a positive note though I consider myself extremely lucky. We made it out before the bailiffs got there ....my son didn't have to go through that or temporary accommodation. We stayed together. We were offered something secure. My son is now working full time and is fiercely independant. I'm still trying to heal from it all but I appreciate things so much. I have alot of empathy towards people who are going through the same. We never think things will happen to us ..until they do.

It's not easy to fix: All measures to stop rent increases are doomed as those are meant to cover costs (which are also rising, nobody wants to let to lose money). And even if we somehow magically get all the boomers to remain quiet and stop sabotaging residential development for a while, you can't just build 200K family houses in a year extra. It's not that simple and there's not enough planners, not enough builders, etc.

Sorry but I disagree, my daughter and her family are overcrowded, but have been told it will be 6 or 7 years before they can be re-housed, because there are no council houses. The councils demolish hundreds, and then sell the land to private property developers, who build tiny little houses which they sell at a starting price of over £300.000. Greedy councils lining their own pockets.

I've literally just bought a tent due to falling for the section 21 notice after renting privately for my entire life and so has a mate. One piece of advice I will give anyone facing this is to take no notice what you read online as it will give you false hope. It will tell you to explain to your council about your illnesses and they will be more likely to help, nonsense. It tells you online to explain how important your pet is to you and that some councils can offer you temporary accomodation for you and your pet, again nonsense and they simply tell you to get rid of your pet end of. The fact is there are more than enough homes for each and every UK citizen and so who is filling these homes I wonder...
