Clarity is there. I think I might like a lil mud but you just taught me a lot about my eq. I’ll probably be able to sot vocals in mixes a lot better now. Thanks much & bless you!

Definitely! Mud is partly a stylistic thing too - so you don’t always gotta treat it so aggressively. It’s all about taste and judgement ! All the best 🙌🏼

No too much low frequency is the result of boomy vocals. Muddy vocals are the result of too much low mid frequencies💯 Fab filter dynamic eq is the best tool for vocal eq’n👍

I feel like just using a dynamic EQ is better for this Fabfilter is the best but a good free alternative is the tdr nova (:

Is there a way that let me use ott on a specific band?
@exssyonatan
@exssyonatan 2 жыл бұрын
Send it through a bus and eq on the bus, then mix it in in parrallel
@5piece
@5piece Жыл бұрын
Not sure if OTT would be the best for this since it’s a more surgical maneuver. The parallel idea mentioned above could potentially work but sounds problematic. I’d recommend using another multiband plugin like the one shown here, or a free alternative (there’s several out there like TDR Nova which is similar)

@@5piece The magic in this works when frequencies mask each others, specially in the mid range, and you throw ott on the mid range of one instrument instead of scooping frequencies out from the others. The new free waves plugin let you do that now. Another thing that actually works. When two instruments are clashing let’s say in the mid range. Throw a flanger on the specific frequencies you want to attenuate. That’ll add movement and randomness to it. Not for everyone but there’s a lot of good applications to it.

How about just a high pass?
@5piece
@5piece Жыл бұрын
Usually thats a part of the solution but over-doing it can lead to a thin vocal. On its own it doesn't always solve the problem. I find this multiband idea combined with a HPF leads to a pretty musical result with less mud overall

Or just put a single band EQ on it. Pull it up until you hear it effecting the vocals and then back it off a little.
@5piece
@5piece Жыл бұрын
Static EQ is helpful but can also be less effective because it reduces a frequency area completely and permanently (unless you use a dynamic EQ or automation). What happens during a key change like an artist going from a normal voice to falsetto? Suddenly that EQ cut is no longer needed and may negatively impact your vocal even though it was helping before. Dynamic moves like this are generally more transparent and used by engineers like me because they only reduce a band when it’s a problem, aka when it passes the threshold. EQ is better than nothing, but not really the best “just do this instead” solution
@thesoundmajors9858
@thesoundmajors9858 Жыл бұрын
Eh. Although static eq CAN be helpful, it isn't controlling but instead removing which isn't always what you're trying to do.

Or save yourself a lot of time and hassle and buy the superb Tokyo Dawn Nova GE. Does this in seconds and will become your go to dynamic eq for everything. 😎

Or just high pass around 90-100hz.
@5piece
@5piece Жыл бұрын
As mentioned in the other comments, that alone won't usually fix muddy vocals. It's definitely a step in the right direction, but that combined with some additional low-mid treatment (where the muddiness REALLY lives) like this is usually a winning combo
@thesoundmajors9858
@thesoundmajors9858 Жыл бұрын
Expect muddiness isn't always in 90-100. And then what happens if you have a vocalist who has a rich tone sitting in that 100 hertz? Where high passing would actually make them lose their character?
@TheLaboys_
@TheLaboys_ Жыл бұрын
Or record re-record the vocals the right way. 🤷‍♂️. Bandaids like this never completely get rid of that sound. If you are having to use 3 eqs and multiband to try to get rid of that chunky sounding midrange, the artist was either to close to the mic, recorded in a shitty homemade booth, in a bad room, or all the above. I can tell right away when mixing a vocal if it was recorded right. When I cut midrange if the vocal doesn’t open up and start sitting in the mix that’s usually a sign it’s going to be a pain to work with
@5piece
@5piece Жыл бұрын
100% agreed but this isn't always an option unfortunately. Some folks are REALLY committed to what they initially recorded (demo-itus) and its up to us engineers to try to minimize the problem with tactics like this and educate the client on how to do better moving forward. I typically explain to my clients where they went wrong, and what I can do (if anything) to fix it in the mix. Ideally though, we never have this issue in the first place OR the client is willing to re-record in those scenarios so we arrive at a better final product.

Yup, using the mics built-in low cut filter can definitely help. Sometimes on its own it doesn’t fully solve the problem though, and that’s where this technique comes into play 😎

Seriously? "somewhere between 30 and 400 Hz"? Are you for real? The average male bass voices can't get anywhere near that low. Don't use a multi-band compressor on the voice. Fix the reason why instruments are competing against the vocals.

Arrogance is the precursor to ignorance. This exact trick has been use on Grammy award winning songs plus it shows me that you don’t understand multi and because what would do to fix a vocal that has frequency build up in the suddenly parts of the song like if the verse is in a different register than the chorus. You would have to automate your eq or you know….. just use a multi band compressor.
