Thanks for your response !!! I checked out there products and I think I will go with them. Thanks !!!! I'm sure my reverse band is busted it shutters in reverse only!! No sense in tearing it down just for the reverse band.. I put a transgo shift in and notice way too much play when I push the band up

@fabriziobgn2579 жыл бұрын
Gary Ferraro Yes,it has harsh engagements .1-2nd take too long , the rpms goes to high before change to 2nd. If i run the car slowly it shifts smooth. After some miles in a stop-and-go actions CEL on P0775,"Check transmission message appear. On runway it looks like no 5th gear. and i feel like the 2nd gear sometimes slips.
@GaryFerraro9 жыл бұрын
Raul Rulas Its possible your band or servo is broken, but the fact that you have harsh engagements and its a lincoln makes me wonder. Since its a lincoln, the only way to know for sure is to monitor the amperage to the pressure control solenoid to see what the computer is commanding and watch scan data at the same time. Are you by chance in new york? Gary
@fabriziobgn2579 жыл бұрын
Gary Ferraro ty for reply! The harsh engagement its ocaccional, in fact it shifts smoothly once it's is on 2nd gear.From "P" to "D" sometimes kicks a little, maybe 3 of 10 times. Also the shift from 1 to 2 came with a little buzzing,"sounds like BRBRBRBRBR" Buzzing is more frequently after running some miles. Sadly I'm too far from NY,I'm in Mexico and it's hard to get a good auto transmission shop. I'll try to get a master kit,a transgo shift kit and the servo sleeve fix kit. Thank you,very helpful!

Thanks for a thorough video. With my 02 Explorer with 212K miles I get an occasional "O/D off" light and when this happens, it typically won't go into 5th (but still shifts into 2nd). When I restart the car the light stays off and it shifts fine.Sometimes throws the P0775. Still deciding whether I want to try and take this one on myself.

I have a 2006 Mustang GT. I am the original owner and the car is in great condition. It has 95,000 miles and is only driven in nice weather.. I have been having intermittent transmission issues the last 3 years. I never have any codes or a flashing OD light. When I’m doing 30 mph I can hit the gas and the transmission flares up as if it is in neutral. Sometimes when this happen it causes the transmission to only work when put in 3rd gear and when coming to a stop as it downshifts there’s some clunking through the drivetrain. I changed the filter and fluid and all looked good in terms of fluid condition and nothing in the pan. Sometimes it starts working perfect with no issues. I never have problems on the highway. This seems to be an electrical issue to me due to the intermittent nature and no codes at all ever. This car had the transmission separator plate replaced twice under warranty by Ford as it had a rattle on cold starts. Do you have any idea what could be going on? Is it possible that it’s the solenoid pack without any codes? I’d appreciate any feedback you can give. Thanks!

Great videos, thank you. I'm rebuilding a 5r55w out of an 02 AWD Explorer. After looking over and inspecting the parts, I noticed on the back end of the pump ( where it goes into the coast clutch? ) there looks to be what is left of a bushing/bearing. I can't seem to find a replacement for this or is it part of the pump. I have noticed what I think is 2 different styles of pumps also. Some with exposed bearings and others that are like mine. Any suggestions? The same end of the pump looks like it got hot, and the frictions and steels were shot in the coast clutch drum. Thanks

hi Gary,i am no tranny gut that's for sure,i wish i was but my wife's 02 explorer has the 5r55w it's 4wd my daughter drove it to work and said it went fine all the way there and she left the key on and killed the battery and it was like 20 below zero so i went and picked her up and went back the next morning and finally got it charged and started i let it warm up for 15 minutes and put it in reverse and it was real numb so i let it warm up a lil more and when i went to go forward it was equally as numb so i pulled it down in to 1st and after a second it caught and took off with no hesitation i shifted up through from 1st to 2nd to 3rd it shifted fine with no slip but as soon as i shifted in to 4th or overdrive? it was like neutral so i guess my question is how and what could have gone wrong sitting still in the super cold that would make me basically lose o-d and reverse?i did notice it whining a bit so i tried to get lucky and changed the filter which was pretty plugged and it did stop the whining and put exactly 6 quarts of new fluid back in.i tried taking out and testing the solenoid pack and the shift solenoids were within the normal range and the temp solenoid was way off could that temp solenoid cause that reverse and o-d issue?when i put it in either gear it tries to move but juuust barely then loses it instantly.i just don't know enough about transmissions and don't have much money at all right now so i am praying you could tell me some ideas to try idk about the temp solenoid or if it could possibly cause that issue,if it was the flow control valve is there anything i could try to unstick it without taking the tranny out?please give me your opinion on it,i have never seen or heard of a tranny going bad sitting still but i am the unluckiest person i know of for sure so if it can happen it will happen to me,thanks for taking the time to read my rediculously long message Gary i truly appreciate it,and if it helps you determine your opinion there is 140.000 miles and the o-d light was flashing when i first got it started that day but that stopped and it will not give me any codes

Man Living Naturally Hello, I would like to know what the code is, with the overdrive off light flashing, there is a code stored, can you take it somewhere to have it scanned, you may not need a rebuild, but the average cost with doing the servo bores is around 2200.00. Gary

Gary,on a complete rebuild, besides the overhaul kit (bearings, clutches, etc.) what parts do you ALWAYS replace on these units? thanks
@GaryFerraro8 жыл бұрын
+jspat67 I always replace the pump and stator bushing, side servo pistons, reverse band(it always flakes). This trans has a big problem with case wear at the servo bores, the worn out bores(happens on every case) will give you gear ratio codes and pressure control solenoid codes, i always sleeve the bores no matter how high or little mileage. Gary

My 05 mustang with this same transmission shifts completely fine in all forward gears but reverse takes exactly 15 seconds to engage…no more no less and it only does this when the engines warmed up. When reverse does engage it’s very smooth it doesn’t slam into gear…Also it will go into reverse immediately with no delay when cold starting. I’ve already changed the filter and replaced the fluid twice. No flashing O/D light, no check engine light and no slipping/delayed gear engagement in drive. Just this weird problem with reverse. It’s been this way for almost a year since I bought the car and it hasn’t gotten any worse. What in the world could be causing this???

I have a 03 Lincoln LS v8. My car gradually lost reverse and drive. When I put I to reverse or drive you can feel the transmission engage but when applying the accelerator it just revs like it's slipping, but it feels like it wants to go. The car will actually pull itself enough to rock the wheels a hair,but a hair is all though. I can get it to move forward if I slide the shifter over to the manual shift (+ & -). When this is done it I can drive it on the main roads manually shifting. While at speed limit speeds, if I slide it back to D from manual it just acts like it's in neutral, though sometimes it will engage and shift normally til I stop and then it's back to the way it was before. I'm getting codes P1717, P0765, P0755,and P768. I have pulled the transmission fill/level check plug while it's running at idle and about a half a quart or so of fluid came out and didn't showany sign of stopping so I put the plug back in. I also got a sample of the fluid to inspect for burnt or metal shavings were present. It looks like it's ready to be changed, but definitely not burnt. Please give me your thoughts on this. Thanks
@GaryFerraro6 жыл бұрын
if this will move in the other drive ranges but not the overdrive range, more than likely the overdrive sprag is no good. The overdrive section is located right behind the pump, trans will have to come out. On a side note, the computers on these lincolns like to go bad, causing harsh shifts and engagements.
@noonamaker6 жыл бұрын
Gary Ferraro thank you for the very quick reply to my question. If you will take another moment to suggest to my issue: what is the best way to detetmine if it is the overdrive sprag or the cpu? Now that you mention the harsh shifts, when I bought the car it shifted hard between 1st and 2nd, sometimes even barking the tires if the shift was hard enough then shift to 3rd for a quick second to only back to second and again onto 3rd very quickly and then normal shifting to 4th and 5th. I could prevent this from happening only if I started in 3rd manually. But there were times (very few times however) when I would take off and it would shift thorough all the gears (1st-5th) with no harsh shifts or unnecessary down shifts from 3rd to 2nd back to 3rd when taking off.
@GaryFerraro6 жыл бұрын
A bad PCM will not make the car not move, the only common to foward and reverse is the o/d sprag, if it moves in the lower ranges like manual one then the sprag is your problem. I have a video called "Checking Catherines Pcm" I show what happens to the computers, if your getting hard shifts, im sure there is an issue with that as well, that should also be fixed because the line pressure is to high.

On my 03 Explorer 2wd (Limited V8) I had flashing overdrive light followed by transmission flashing. Just later today (about a week or two later after I noticed the flashing OD). The check engine light came on for Pressure Control Solenoid B (p0775). I have about 100,300 miles on her. For the car to shift into second I have to let off the gas otherwise it just holds and the engine rpm starts to get high. It also has issues going into 4th. Reverse is fine though. My guess is likely the Servo or a broken band? Or could there be potential for less serious? (At this point thinking a reman if she's toast. Any good recommendations? Looking for something with updates.

Probably not, the only thing you can do first is pull the servo cover off to see if the piston is broken. It's either something with the piston or band

@GaryFerraro8 жыл бұрын
+Raymond Root, Hello, The 5R55E is different from the 5R55S, but assuming it is the 5R55E, what may be your problem is a stripped out driveshell, when these shells go bad you will have no 2nd, no4th, and no reverse. To confirm this drive the car, try to go about 25 mph and release the gas, it may make a 1-3 shift, if it does than thats your problem. On this trans there is nothing common thats on in foward and reverse. Gary

Gary thanks for this post, I have a 02 Ford Expl O/D light is flashing. It shift rough from 1st to 2nd and the shifting has been getting gradually worse. I was reading some other comments and I havent gotten it tested or anything yet although Im pretty sure its a bad solenoid from research. My question to you if you have the chance to answer, there 2 different solenoids one thats available to change by just dropping the trans pan. Do you think it could possibly be the smaller solenoid? Would it give off a different code if it was only the smaller solenoid that was bad? Thank You
@GaryFerraro8 жыл бұрын
+Jason Popp Sorry for the late reply, I would have it scanned first to see if codes are present, the solenoid pack is costly and it may not fix your problem, you may have an issue with a band or worn case. Gary

Hey Gary, I have a problem with my 5R55W not going into any of the drive gears on my 2006 Explorer XLT V6. I still have reverse, and I also have the correct fluid pressures at the solenoids when I hooked up my buddy's pro-scanner, but the transmission refuses to go into any of the forward gears. I've also tried cycling through the gears and it engaged once, but it did not move forward. It's also been two years since I've done the rebuild and I'm at my wits end with this issue. Before I throw more parts at it, do you know what's wrong with it? Current Mileage on the transmission is ~225,000mi. Thanks!

+seriousNoodle Hello, More than likely you have a problem with your foward clutch drum or your foward clutches, that would cause a no forward movement but still have reverse. Not much you can do with that on the outside except check the fluid level, are you familar with how to do that? Gary Thanks for watching
@martinfernandonhs938 жыл бұрын
Gary Ferraro Yes, I am familiar with checking the fluid level. In fact, I had done a solenoid change and fluid change prior to it giving me that no forward condition due to a P0745 code. It also felt like it was slipping at takeoff and in the gear change between 3rd and 4th. Thanks for your reply, Gary!
@GaryFerraro8 жыл бұрын
seriousNoodle Hello, Slipping on the pullaway is your foward drum or clutch. To give you some info on the P0745 and the slip from 3-4, that may be a band problem, the case bores wear out and cause these codes. Alot of people change the solenoid pack because of the codes but it actually is the case bores worn out, the reason why these codes show up is because the pressure control soleniods apply and release the bands. Bore wear on this trans is the #1 problem with this unit. Gary
@joshorr94738 ай бұрын
My mustang has exactly that. P0775 pressure solenoid b and I’m correct gear ration 2 and 5 which is p0735 and p0732. Exactly what you said in the video and I have no idea what to do. Can u please reason and reach out to help me
@GaryFerraro8 ай бұрын
you have either a cracked piston on the side of the trans or a broken band, do not change the solenoid pack, it will not fix the problem. You can get the piston out with out pulling the trans, the 2nd and 5th piston is the first one closer to the bell housing

I have a 08 ford explorer 4.0 auto 4x4. Transmission went out. Without notice. Won't catch any gear. Could be the solenoid pack?.
@GaryFerraro7 жыл бұрын
Generally that wouldnt cause it, if it happened suddenly something most likely broke or stripped inside the trans. This trans has no filler tube and dipstick it has to be put on a lift to check fluid level, that should be the first step to see what happened, if it seems overfull then the pump went out.

@GaryFerraro8 жыл бұрын
+AFBmex Hello,assuming your linkage is ok. The problem with your trans is, the foward clutch is locked on and will not release, this is why it moves foward in neutral and has no reverse. The only fix for this is to pull the trans for overhaul . When disassembled you will find the the foward clutch pack is stuck together, so the foward clutch will always be appiled no matter where the shift selector is placed. There are usually more codes than just that one. Do you know anyone with a good scan tool like a snap-on or autel. Maybe a P0732 and a P0735 present as well, I'm thinking it's making a 1-3 shift, does it seem like a long shift?

thinking about buying an 04 lincoln ls this morning. the owner says it shifts through all gears but has to reach high rpm to shift out. do you think this is a solenoid problem?
@GaryFerraro7 жыл бұрын
With what your saying to me it sounds like its missing a gear. Drive the car and take notice when it shifts out at high rpm. If it does it on the 1-2 shift, its actually making a 1-3 shift and your missing 2nd gear. If it has a high rpm shift on the 2-3 shift, its actually making a 2-4 shift and your missing 3rd. If this is the case you will need a trans. I dont think all shifts will be high rpm. Drive it and take notice when it happens and let me know, also , do you have a scanner to see if codes are present or if codes have been cleared?

One more thing i forgot to mention about these cars, the computers go bad alot, but rebuilt computers are available much cheaper than new, if you drive the car also pay attention to how the engagements are from park to drive or park to reverse, if they are firm you may have high line pressure do to a bad computer. Solenoid pack is fairly simple to change, just drop the pan and there it is, but to fill the trans fluid has to be pumped in. 1300 is a lot if it needs a solenoid pack. are you sure that is the code number and are there any other codes for the trans? does the car shift or just stay in one gear?

The car drives but takes time to move to gear 2 but how severe is this error and can it be managed till I can get it fixed or replaced? Thank you so much as your video really helped me and my team get a full understanding
@GaryFerraro8 жыл бұрын
You problem is the front band, either the piston broke or the band broke, the only thing you can try from the outside is to take the piston for the band out and see if the piston itself is broken, There is a snap ring holding the piston and piston cover in(its not that easy to get out, but it can be done)To get the snap ring out you have to close it with a pair of snap-ring pilers, the kind that has the tips on the end. Probably shouldnt drive the car that much, what actually is happening is its shifting from first to third.

Hi Gary, On a 2004 Explorer 4x4 137k miles, OD light flashing, P0775 is the only code. Slips at take off but catches gear with light throttle. Cleared code and came back within one mile. No overdrive, but all other gears seem to be working ok. Trans fluid and filter are ok, have not checked solenoid pack. Does this sound like a broken servo or worn bores ?

Worn servo bores will not make it slip on take off, what type of scanner are you using to pull the codes, sometimes the small hand held ones dont show all the codes. I would like to make sure that P0732 and P0735 are not present. Question, does the 1-2 shift seem long and drawn out?
@splizz6 жыл бұрын
I use a Ford VCM II with a TIS subscription..usually used for programming, no other codes. Before I heard back from you I pulled both servos, OD servo was broken at head of shaft, other one was ok. +Catherine Caylus Catherine, The front band is where you want to go, this transmissions is a 5 speed automatic, (its not really referred as overdrive,just a 5 speed) The one thing that can be checked from the outside is the band adjustment, make sure it did not back out(not common, but i figure i mention it) I am located on long island are you? If you are i would be happy to check your car at no charge to you. The most common problem with this car are the worn bores. Po745 code popping up won’t shift from 2 to 3 unless rpm is below 2000 and going over 25 mph
@GaryFerraro5 жыл бұрын
What type of scan tool are you using? there are usually more codes present when you have the P0745? There is usually a P0733 along with that code, a regular code reader may not pick that up.
@emperorpalpatine15745 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure actually but my dads friend plugged it into one that reads the transmission and all other engine systems and po745 was the only one present. I think this may actually be the solenoid because po745 is pressure solenoid A
@emperorpalpatine15745 жыл бұрын
Gary Ferraro it definitely does seem like more of an electrical issue because sometimes it’ll shift perfectly and the trans was taken apart less than 10k miles ago so I’m not sure if anything could of happened in that little period of time?
@GaryFerraro5 жыл бұрын
@@emperorpalpatine1574 The P0745 is responsible for applying the band for 3rd gear, if the band is broken or there is a problem with 3rd the computer will blame the solenoid and flag that code, if this slips in 3rd or runsaway in 3rd, you more than likely have a broken band

@@emperorpalpatine1574 common issue with these units is the case bores wear out. Do you know anyone with a scan tool like snap-on or Autel?

Im in Southeast Texas Gary. It started flashing check transmission (04 Explorer 4x4 4.6) the other week at highway speeds. No noticeable change in drive ability. So I decided to change the trans fluid and filter...I did that now its slipping at lower speeds, shifting in and out of gear maybe? I had cruise set at 70mph and it would go from 2k rpm to 5k rpm constantly without a change of speed. Now it flashes overheating. Which I immediately parked it and haven't drove since.

jeremy robinson Have you had it scanned for codes? If so what are they? Gary

My 04 Explorer's reverse went on me today. Although it is still able to reverse slowly on flat ground it acts like neutral when I rev it. All my forward gear seem fine. Wondering if that would be the reverse band. Just seems weird I still have some reverse movement. There are also no codes. Also is it safe to drive like this? Thank you
@GaryFerraro7 жыл бұрын
If you have good foward and no reverse, yes it could be a broken band. The 4th clutch is also on in reverse but with good foward 4th should be ok. What you can do is drop the pan and take out the reverse piston housing and you will be able to see the band, this way you can check to see if its broken or even if the reverse strut broke. Ive also seen a bad solenoid pack cause no reverse but i would check the band first

@GaryFerraro7 жыл бұрын
Sure, You have an issue with your front band which is 2nd and 5th. Question, when you drive the car does it seem to shift late on the 1-2 shift?
@Adiljawad7 жыл бұрын
Gary Ferraro yes it hesitates to shift to the 2nd gear, the rpm goes very high n then shifts with a jerk. similarly the 5th gear almost doesnt engage because i try to keep rpm to less than 3000. may be if i let it rev to more rpms it might engage to5th gear or may be not..
@GaryFerraro7 жыл бұрын
Sounds like the front band is broken or the center of the apply piston is broken. The piston is on the outside right(passenger) side of the trans.

Gary Ferraro thanks man.. i will surely get to that.. but do i need to replace the solenoid pack or i can use the same one. i had already done testing on the solenoid pack and it works fine.. someone suggested me that you need to reprogram the solenoid but i haven't heard of this before.. can you please confirm if there is anything like this?
@GaryFerraro7 жыл бұрын
No, you dont need to change the pack or reprogram it. The reason why that solenoid code comes up is because that solenoid applies the band, the pack is fine, no need to change it

Hello Gary, I have a 2004 Ford Explorer V6, and my O/D is flashing and I received a P0775 code only on the scanner will my transmission need to be broken down like you did this one on the video to repair it?

I have to let off the gas to shift to second gear otherwise it’ll just rev up.
@GaryFerraro5 жыл бұрын
How does it shift? Is the 1-2 shift a long shift? What type of scanner are you using?
@robertautrey44005 жыл бұрын
Gary Ferraro yes it’s a long shift then a jerk, I really don’t know what the name of the scanner is the guy at autozone scanned it for me, and the P0775 code is the only one that appeared...
@GaryFerraro5 жыл бұрын
@@robertautrey4400 Probably a small hand held scanner, the problem is either the front band(2nd and 5th gears) is broken or the piston that applies the band is broken, what actually is happening is it is making a 1-3 shift not a 1-2 shift. This code is usually with 2 other codes, P0732 and P0735
