5S is a Lean tool used to organize and maintain a workspace to make it more operationally effective. 5S stands for Sort, Straighten, Scrub, Standardize, and Sustain. The original Japanese terms are Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu, and Shitsuke.
The concept is closely related to visual management, where you create visual controls to guide in decision making. The premise is that you make abnormal conditions jump out at you and link those conditions to plans that are prepared in advance.
The goal of both is to eliminate avoidable waste and allow operators and managers to make better used of their intellectual firepower.
