Do you have any 5th or 6th graders? What went well or didn't go well for you?

We decided not to do FIG this upcoming year. We are going to try EIW so, hope it works out! We will also be using TGTB handwriting again this year. Thanks for sharing.

Hope EIW is a good fit. What grade will you be using it for?

@@CalmintheChaosHomeschoolI hope so too! I picked level 6 so, hopefully it works out. I was debating on a lower level, but I will see how it goes.

@@luv4all839 I have a friend whose daughter did that level and they really liked it (she’s why I tried it out).

Do you like spelling you see? Do you think TGTB is a good curriculum? I am looking for something simple for my upcoming first grader for learning to read and math. About to have my sixth child so I need something simple with no prep work but effective and fun for my child.

Spelling you see is the only spelling that has worked for us for longer than a few weeks. I have seen a lot of improvement in my struggling spellers over the 4 years we have used it. They don’t love it, and we go at super slow speed, but it’s working. As for TGATB, I haven’t used it much other than about 3 different levels of their math. For me and my kids, math was a lot from me. Level 2 I did with my youngest 2 or first year of homeschooling. This level was before they revised it and made it simpler, so it was a lot. Then I did the simply math with my oldest for 4th and 5th. I had to help her a lot (because I just do with her and her math) and she liked it more than any other math when we were doing it. But at the end of level 5, she was getting overwhelmed. We also had to do that slowly because there was too much daily work for her. TGATB LA has always looked overwhelming to me. I think the fact that each day is different and doesn’t follow a predictable pattern don’t work for my brain and I feel like it would overwhelm my children as well. We opt for more different pieces of LA that e we know what to expect from each piece. That being said… lots of people love TGATB. I do think it’s a good curriculum and use it all through their homeschooling years. Additionally, if I had a child starting school, I WOULD look at TGATB for their beginning years. I’d also look at Masterbooks and All About Reading.

@@CalmintheChaosHomeschoolHave you ever heard of Happy Cheetah reading??? I see it’s by the same author of Spelling You See.

@@beachgurl788 oh… I have heard of happy cheetah but I didn’t know it was by the same company as spelling you see. I have heard that it is really good with kids who really struggle with language arts. That’s all I know.

@@CalmintheChaosHomeschoolSo do you think it could work for any child? I am about to have my sixth child and I need something that is very simple and effective but no prep work or planning for me. I had originally planned to try All About Reading but it’s just going to be too much for me to use right now with everything we have going on.

Does the reading detective have vocabulary? Trying to decide which route to go.

I would not call it a vocabulary program. It really focuses more on understanding what one is reading.

I find my kids need a mix of mastery learning and spiral review!!! Nothing wrong with going at a slower pace!!! My older kids have learned a lot of writing thru reading both good and bad pieces of writing as that’s how TGTB teaches it and I feel like it’s working apart from for my oldest!!! I didn’t see an issue but his class teacher did and after talking to the teacher I found out that they had difficulty expectations!!! I have a kid who needs to work on fine motor skills and she does art and legos!!! I love going over homophones with my kids to help them with the different meanings and TGTB teaches it!!! I’ve seen other curriculums for it!!! I didn’t kno worldly wise teaches different meanings of words!!! I have notebooks for spelling words from our HBL for each kid and I select words from it especially words that I see issues with!!!

Going at the child's pace is definitely a must for successful homeschool. Otherwise, it becomes unsustainable. I love that TGATB works for most of your children! It's great to have curriculum that works!
